Tees
Schools League Year 8
The newly named Nunthorpe Lions relied on a late
surge as they overcame a well organised and full
strength squad from All Saints School, Ingleby
Barwick in Stockton.
Both teams
struggled to find the net in the early stages
with Danny Jards and Ben Watts having the best
chances in the first three minutes. Lions scored
first through Dan Brown just after the third
minute as the skilful point guard weaved through
the All Saints defence. Darryen Foeley replied
soon after and the game began to open up. In the
sixth minute, a foul by All Saints Chris Riley
placed Dan Brown to the free throw line although
he converted only 1/2 free shots, an important
point nevertheless to regain the lead 3-2.
All Saints Coach;
Simon Lloyd called a Time Out to reorganise his
troops which had immediate effect as the All
Saints stormed into the lead with 6 unanswered
points. Danny Tomlin, Darryen Foeley and Chris
Riley all finding the net.
The second
quarter brought an exciting ten minutes of play
as both teams fought for everything. Danny
Tomlin used his strength to keep Lions away from
the basket and grab the resulting rebounds from
missed shots as did James Williamson at the
other end for Nunthorpe. Mary Barnard was also
applying strong pressure at the top of the key
for Nunthorpe and this tight defence from both
sides was making it difficult for either team to
score.
Lions' Brown
eventually broke the deadlock to hit two fast
breaks and again went to the free throw line to
make 1/2 which tied the game 8-8. The impressive
dribbling of All Saints Danny Jards caused
Nunthorpe problems and a neat one-two with team
mate Chris Hawkins led to a great basket from
Jards to give Saints the lead back.
In the third
quarter; Philip Findlay battled for an offensive
rebound and then made a powerful lay up to tie
the game yet again. The half time talk by Lions'
coach Darren Bunn having the desired result as
Lions began to edge away, Brown using his speed
and skill to make the next 2 baskets with
Findlay using his strength and timing inside the
key for the third, to increase Lions' lead to 4
points, 16-12. In the last minute of the third
quarter Tom Mckynell scored for All Saints to
keep the visitors hopes of winning alive.
The fourth
quarter would be agonisingly painful for the All
Saints who failed to score while the home side
went on a rampage with a 15-0 run, 13 of the
points coming from the unstoppable Dan Brown and
the other basket from James Williamson to top
off a good personal game from the forward. All
Saints will take heart from a good three
quarters and look forward to their next game
while Nunthorpe make it 2 wins from 2 games to
consolidate second place in the Year 8 League, 1
point behind Conyers but with one game in hand.
Nunthorpe are now the only unbeaten team out of
the teams that have played games.
MVP for the game
was impressive Dan Brown who hit a season high
25 points and led the Lions by fine example.
Danny Tomlin played his socks off and stood out
for All Saints, grabbing rebound after rebound
for the visitors cause. Nunthorpe Coach; Darren
Bunn was very pleased with their second win of
the season and singled out James Williamson for
special praise for his defensive contribution,
adding "James did an important job for us
tonight. He was a big defensive presence and
will continue to improve at both ends of the
court throughout the season."
Coach Lloyd was
encouraged by his teams performance in spite of
their costly dip in the fourth quarter. "We had
a couple of year sevens in the squad tonight to
add to the depth and all the players did well."
