Lions Sign Two New Players!

TU Lions have strengthened their squad, with the additions of point guard; Adam Walsh and power forward; Chris Tappenden. Both players will be joining the B team, to provide much needed experience and strength. "We were missing a true point guard and a big powerful player and we now have both. These players will enable our developmental players to enter a game and have more of an impact, under their guidance" added coach; James Thomson.

Tappenden joins from the Warriors, who have now pulled out of the Division One and is looking forward to the challenge of developing the young talent in the Lions Club. Tappenden has been training with the club since last season. Walsh, who is a youth worker a member of the "Fly Team" basketball delivery project hasn't played competitive basketball for a while, but has been keeping fit and shouldn't take long to settle in. Adam is also the fiancé of Lions female player; Lizzy Grant and the pair will be marrying this month. Congratulations to them both from Game Time.

All Saints were the better, stronger and hungrier team for the first half, but another match winning display from Nunthorpe guard; Dan Brown lifted the Lions to victory. The score line of 31-14 doesn't reflect fairly on the good play by All Saints although they could do nothing to stop Game MVP Dan Brown. For full match report and game photos, click here.

Heat Heating Up!

Year 8
Blakeston Bulls travelled to Manor College in their Y8 fixture with Manor Heat edging the game 35-32 in what was described as an excellent basketball game, with both teams impressing. Dylan Fisher, of Manor Heat was awarded the MVP award for his heroics whilst Ben Wilshire put in a good display for Bulls. Manor now move into third place, joint points with Nunthorpe. Conyers Cougars are still leading the league with 7 points from three games.

Year 9
Norton Knights entered their first Y9 game of the season hoping to impress, but found the opposition in Manor College too much to cope with. Manor Heat controlled the game from start to finish to win 16-37. This winning margin could have been more if it wasn't for Norton's Dale Harrop, who worked hard throughout and made a number of steals, leading to fast break points.

Year 10
UCA were on the wrong end of a 14-51 thumping. Blakeston Bulls were the deliverers of this punishment, achieving the highest points scored by a team so far this season. Dan Seaman was MVP for Bulls with a good all round performance and 16 points.

Velocity Surge Ahead In Final Quarter!

Lions lost narrowly in their best display of the season, having led comfortably for the majority of the first three quarters. It will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Lions B players, having controlled the game for such a long time to then lose out in the fourth quarter. For the neutral, the game provided an exciting finale as both teams battled for the victory. For full match report and photos click here.

The Tees Schools League was provided with its first awards of the season with Mark Rhodes of Norton Knights Y 10 and Paul Atkinson of Manor College Heat Y 9 teams picking up coach of the month awards. Paul Atkinson, head coach of Manor picked his team up from a first game defeat to bounce back with impressive wins over Kings Academy and Norton. In Y 10, Mark Rhodes' Norton produced the game of the week with Stokesley Tigers, narrowly beating Tigers 37-35 in over time. Steven Green of Norton and Dylan Fisher of Manor picked up the player of the month awards, Fisher playing well in each of his three games this season. To view the awards click here.

For the TU Lions, Luke Thompson earned his third MVP in a row with good displays in training and games, including a 56 point tally against Warriors. Thompson beat off strong competition from Carlos Alemanno. For all the other winners visit the awards section.

Experience a Winner!

Redcar Mariners 69-50 Richmond Vikings
Paul Neesam top scored with 29 points as the Mariners consolidated their second place in Division Two on level points with Norton Bulls, but Bulls having two games in hand. Mariners overcome the youthful and well organised Richmond Vikings in what was described by Mariners Coach; Steve Lynas as "A Game played in all the right spirits!" Richmond, who sit in seventh place, struggled to cope with the experience of the Mariners, but did well to keep within 8 points for the first three quarters. Ashley Farrelly produced another good performance adding 25 points and only 3 fouls, that's only 5 fouls in total in the two games since being sent off at Lions, showing a dramatic improvement in temperament, that will serve him well in what appears to be a flourishing basketball career. Colin Todd also proved his worth, coming off the bench late in the game to convert both free throws after being fouled, showing his cool hand, even late in the game. Craig O'Malley collected 10 for Mariners but Matthew Insall only hit 2 in what has been a fairly inconsistent season so far. Insall was MVP in his first game against TU Lions adding 27 points but has followed that with 9, 4, 12, 13, 1 and 2 yesterday.

Long gone are the days of Mariners only having six players for games and forcing veteran; Keith Swain to brush the dust off his boots! Yesterday's game against Vikings saw Redcar with a full squad of 12 players and three players in Swain, Lynas and Gordon Barnes not playing. All but one on the Redcar score sheet scored.

The youth-experience divide in D2 is almost representative of oil and water in a jar. The experienced teams of Norton, Redcar and Easingwold are heading the division respectively while the youthful Hartlepool Heat B, Thirsk and Richmond are propping the division. However, all young teams will benefit from the experience of a full season, especially with so many games in this years D2 and will be all the better for next season.

Losers Still in Charge & Dodgers Dodge To Top!

Losers had to start this months CVL with a shootout against Lions to decide the winning team from their draw last month. The shootout between Philip Findlay and Alan Slasor seemed to last an age until Findlay missed and Slasor capitalised to earn an extra 3 points for the Losers.

There were two new teams in this weeks CVL with the Golden Oldies entering the female league and The Champs entering the male U16 league. All Star Tigers received a boost with the addition of big Gavin Patterson to their squad but were unlucky as Cameron Lee (2nd leading scorer) was absent due to illness. Top shooter; Alex Bailey was also missing leaving the Tigers to endure further suffering. Their fortunes though will surely improve if they can turn out a full team next month.

The Losers are proving the team to watch as they extended their unbeaten run to seven. The double act of Marshall Patterson and Alan Slasor is working extremely well although they will have to keep up the good play as Lions came close with their 12-18 defeat. For full report and photos visit the GT CVL section or click here.

Brown's in Town!

Nunthorpe School beat Conyers Cougars 38-10 thanks to a dazzling display by Nunthorpe guard Dan Brown. Brown led the team with his 22 personal points and was well supported by Philip Findlay who chipped in with 8. Head Coach of Nunthorpe, Darren Bunn was delighted with the victory in the year 8 league, especially as Cougars were coming to Nunthorpe on the back of beating Macmillan Academy. Nunthorpe are now in second place with one game in hand. For the updated Tees Schools League Tables click here.

Cougars & Ninjas Notch Wins
The first game in Year 8 of the Tees Schools League took place with Conyers Cougars proving too strong for Macmillan Academy. Academy left Conyers School on the wrong end of a 21-8 result. In year 10 Blakeston Bulls couldn’t emulate the heroics of their Y9 team’s recent victory and lost out at home to Newlands Ninjas, 30-41. Damian McKenzie of Bulls matched Christina O’Connor and Sam Harran of Ninjas as joint top scorers with 10 points apiece.

Win Some Lose Some!

Lions left Billingham Campus with a Sweet & Sour taste in their mouths after beating Hartlepool Heat Juniors convincingly 57-33, only to be soundly overturned by Heat ladies 11-51. The ladies, in only their second game came up against not only senior players, but well drilled and experienced players who were simply too strong. The nerves were evident from the early stages of the game for the Lionesses and the girls didn't manage to score until the second quarter. The passing was proving a real problem for Lions as Heat seemed to be everywhere, all the time and Lions were struggling to create spaces, something which will surely be worked on in training. Last game's MVP; Steph Edwards put in a another good defensive display and Christina O'Connor proved a threat on offence but collectively the ladies couldn't settle. Even with the addition of Lions missing key players in Brittany Krimsky and Lizzy Grant, the Heat would have still been too strong and in the end, Lions did well to reach double figures.

Some would say it was the wrong game for the youthful Lions but with ladies teams few and far between, every opportunity of a game should be taken to gain the experience which is vital for the development of the team. The team now know their current level, the level they need to strive towards and what to work on in training, so the game was certainly useful, even if the desired result was not achieved. Katie Lamb was awarded the player of the game for the Lions team for her role at both ends of the court.

The Juniors faired much better and with the talented Patrick O'Connor and All Star Camp MVP; Alan Slasor included in this games squad, Lions looked a safe bet. Marshall Patterson produced another strong performance as the young big man controlled the defence and played a leading part on offence. Phillip Findlay enjoyed a good game but was restricted with court time due to early foul trouble. Dan Brown was, as usual, a constant threat and when the younger and lesser experienced players entered the court, he led his team well. One of those youngsters was seven year old Anthony Dyne who played his heart out whenever he entered the court.

The one to watch was the seemingly unstoppable Patrick O'Connor who glided from end to end to score 11 points, which could have been more had it not been for playing the younger ones in the second half. Game MVP was, for the second week running, Marshall Patterson who top scored with 15 points along with his haul of rebounds and blocks.

Training Junior Group Awards Presentation Senior Group Boxing out

Budding basketball stars from across Teesside, Darlington and North Yorkshire were on display today at the third and final All Star Basketball Camp, organised by Game Time. Over 35 players participated in the junior and senior sessions at Bydales School, Marske. The camp witnessed some intense training including a gruelling fitness session for both juniors and seniors which pushed the players to the limit to improve their strength and conditioning. "We wanted the players to go away with exercises they can continue with outside of their regular basketball to further improve them as athletes" added James Thomson, Coach.

The pick of the bunch for the Junior camp was Alan Slasor, who impressed with his good play in the tournament and earned the MVP award. The Senior MVP was Matthew Brown of the Bears, who dominated play during the senior event.

The Junior Most Improved Player (MIP) was awarded to Lauren Bewick, the second youngest player at only 8 years old. This was a unanimous decision by the coaches for the youngsters skill, work ethic and general improvement. The Senior MIP was given to Martin Cook from Easingwold who performed extremely well in both the training and tournament.

The Full article and photos from the event will be uploaded soon to the events page. Keep checking for updates.

Tigers Coach; Nick Hughes paid tribute to the players after the game "This was a thrilling first league match for both teams and a good example of why basketball is so exciting to watch as well as play!" The Central Venue League (CVL) will host the second round of league games for the juniors (U16) and females (any age). The All Star Tigers will be looking for their first win and with the talent in their squad, they shouldn't have long to wait! The Losers team, currently in first place will be hoping to extend their dominance although they must first compete in a shoot out for the outcome of their fixture against The Lions. If the Lions win they will tie first place going into this Sunday's games.

There will also be new additions to the teams and depending on how many newcomers could also be more teams. Oliver Clark (right), Daniel Wright and Cameron Stewart are back for this next round, all very capable players who will be looking to make their mark.

It is not too late for players or even whole teams to enter the CVL and for more information, contact Game Time.

Tees United Lions girls will be looking to make it 2/2 wins as they take on the Heat this Sunday. The Heat will be a good team and have been playing competitive basketball for over a year. They also play National League basketball for Gateshead Storm in a partnership between the two clubs. Lions, in only their second fixture will be hoping to emulate their heroism against University of Teesside and welcome back Charlie Collins, who missed the last game due to other commitments. With another strong performance from the ladies, especially last games star player; Steph Edwards (left) the girls have the ability to douse Heat's flames.

Stokesley Tigers overcame the Tees United Lions in this junior friendly but it was the impressive style of play adopted by Stokesley coach; Nick Hughes which made the difference. Coach Hughes' team were well drilled and good on defence but it was their awesome movement of the ball on offence which was at times a pleasure to watch. Lions had the biggest player in Marshall Patterson, who dominated the rebounds, but Tigers overcame this by their great passing and individual skill from captain; William Hughes and top scorer; Euan Wardle (pictured above). Lions v Warriors Preview

TU Lions will play Wynyard Warriors in Lions second home, at Billingham Campus School on Thursday 22nd November. This game will provide a good opportunity for Lions to bounce back from their last fixture's disappointment; the home defeat by Ormesby Tigers. Lions will be missing Steve Butler due to work commitments and Richard Keirl, who is on the injured list. Keirl is nursing damaged ankle ligaments and will be out for at least another two months. Warriors will be looking to secure their first win of the season and with the team just starting to gel will be hopeful of causing an upset. Lions will be well aware of the offensive threat of Chris Tappenden; the Warriors leading scorer and emerging talent Imran Rashid, but they will have to play close attention to the defensive presence of 6'6" centre Jason Malcolm (above).

Prior Face Tough Challenge
Prior College will travel to Norton College in Sheffield this Wednesday in the second round of the British Colleges Cup. Prior soundly beat a well organised Tyne Met College last week 92-43, one point shy of a fifty point win and spirits are high within the squad. Norton however went one better as they overcame Wakefield College 163-25! This massive victory would indicate that Norton College have a good team although it must be noted that Wakefield are one of the weaker teams in the competition.

Norton College, part of Sheffield College has a basketball academy in partnership with elite professional side, Sheffield Sharks and Prior will have to be at their best to progress. All key players are available for Prior and there is good news in Matthew Brown returning from injury, after turning his ankle in the win over Tyne Met. Brown played yesterday for TU Lions and top scored with 27 points.

Meanwhile Stockton 6th form will travel to Thomas Rotherham and Hartlepool 6th form will face Newcastle upon Tyne College.

Lions Lose at Easingwold

Tees United Lions B went down 83-65 at Easingwold Vikings. The small venue of the Galtres Village Hall in Easingwold, near York would have been cramped for dominoes, never mind a game of basketball and the restricted space had an affect on the impact of Lions' explosive players, in particular Michael Peddie who was unable to run the court to his usual advantage. Vikings were comfortable leaders from the outset, with an average 15 point lead throughout the game and to be fair to the home team they also ran their bench, with 9/10 players scoring.

With three minutes to go in the third quarter and down by 17 points, Lions coach; James Thomson, called a Time Out to issue a rallying call - "Three minutes to show we can win this game, or we run the bench and give lesser experienced players some court time" The switch to a full court press reaped immediate rewards as Lions forced the Vikings into errors and converted these into points. For the first time in the game, Lions looked on top and by the third minute of the final quarter the young guns were within 8 points, 62-54. With Vikings in foul trouble, Peddie, Brown and Matthew Norman penetrated the defence, which resulted in more fouls. After five team fouls, every foul is two shots, Lions converting 7/9 attempts.

The momentous rise in the play of Lions would not last, however and by the sixth minute their slender grasp they were beginning to impose was beginning to slip away. Steve Back and John Steel combined well to hit 20 points of their teams final quarter haul of 25, 15 of these in the final four minutes, aided by the fact Lions big man; Matthew Norman fouled out. In the seventh minute, Dan Brown and Phillip Findlay entered the game, with Charlie Collins and Emily Manders joining Marshall Patterson at the back, Patterson being the most experienced player at only 14 years old! The young side did not disappoint though as Dan Brown ensured the team would leave happy with a great solo move from coast to coast.

Lions player of the game; Matthew Brown was in good shooting form, after enduring a couple of bad shooting performances in recent games, top scoring with 27 including three 3 pointers but the MVP is awarded to John Steel of Vikings who led his side well and collected 20 points.
