Devils Regain Top Spot
The Red Devils finished in first place with
23 points whilst last weeks leaders, Norton
Bombers are in second place with 21 points.
The Red Devils have played one extra game
than the Bombers so the league is very
close. Rangers and Cheetahs are almost neck
and neck too as both teams performed well to
gain valuable points. One disappointing
factor was the dismissal of Dale Mathe who
plays for the Norton Cheetahs. Dale has now
been fined 4 points after showing
unsportsmanlike behaviour. If Dale hadn't
lost his cool he would have been only 2
baskets behind second place in the leading
scorers.

Pro's Praise For Game Time Stars
American professional basketball player,
Ralph Bucci, visited Game Time's training
session at Billingham Campus yesterday and
was full of praise for the developing
youngsters. The session, which Game Time is
developing into a centre of excellence for
basketball, caters for all ages and
abilities, both male and female. Ralph was
keeping a particular eye on 16 year old
James Burton who has aspirations of
attending high school in the USA. Ralph said
of the youngster "He is not the tallest
player, but makes up for it with good
ability and a really good attitude. Myself
and James Thomson will monitor his progress
over the next year."
Ralph also reserved praise for the
"athletic" Matthew Norman and Marshall
Patterson, "I can tell he has really
improved" added Ralph about 12 year old
Marshall. His favourite player though was 16
year old hustler, Michael Peddie who has
been nicknamed 'spark plug' by the American.
He was kept entertained as Peddie bounced
all over the court, giving his all and
diving for every loose ball.

Bombers Take Charge
The Norton Bombers finished last week with a
bang as they won both league games to go top
of the Frederick Nattrass School League. In
the opening game the former leaders
struggled to cope with the tenacious play of
Calvin Eastwood who was inspirational in
leading his team to victory. The Red Devils,
who have been the top team until these games
suffered a blip although another two baskets
from Lauren Buckle ensured her position as
leading scorer. Click

Nattrass School League. She now has 20
points while Calvin Eastwood has 12.
Buckle's team, the Red Devils are also
topping the league table after another two
league wins. The Fierce Cheetahs made the
biggest improvement in performances and
almost beat the Red Devils with some superb
play by Dale Mathe. Player of the week was

2
out of 2 for Richmond
Knights lost two games to Richmond Vikings
in the space of two nights. Norton's B team
felt hard done by in a very exciting first
encounter in the semi final of the Division
Cup which the Vikings won 92-63. Norton felt
that many decisions went against them, then
lost a player through injury and finally
lost Big Andrew Marshall, who fouled out in
the fourth quarter. The Knights had taken a
good lead in the second quarter and
restricting Richmond to only 10 points (2
points for the first six minutes). Richmond
though proved too strong and were deserved
winners.
The final League game the following night
was an opportunity to give the younger
players a good run with Dan Brown and Philip
Findlay getting plenty of court time.
Richmond were again winners 59-90, but
Norton certainly made them work for it.

Norton Knights have been paired with Hornets
and Easingwold Vikings for the A and B teams
respectively. The B team game will take
place on 5th April at Norton whilst the A
team game will take place on 26th April,
again at Norton. Norton A must make this a
priority as the League is surely now out of
reach. The B team will also be keen to go as
far as they can, especially in the midst of
a playing resurgence.
24/03/07
Friday Training
Its important that all senior players make
training on Fridays from 6-8pm at Billingham
Campus School. This is important for two
reasons, firstly to improve as a team and
secondly to cover costs. Some teams have to
pay up to five pounds for training and game
nights and I am keen to ensure we don't go
over the two pound price. For the session to
be successful please be there on time to
train hard. We have big plans for next
season.
19/03/07 - Teesside Basketball League
Norton almost produced a remarkable win over
second placed Nunthorpe Velocity in an
unusual game with no referees. With other
fixtures being played the referee who was
supposed to officiate this game was unable
to attend. Both teams were only notified
less than half an hour before the game so a
decision was made to proceed without the
refs.
Match report
15/03/07 - Teesside Basketball League
Norton Knights were unlucky to lose against
Redcar Mariners with many spectators feeling
the youngsters were harshly treated
regarding fouls called against them. The
stats showed a massive 26 fouls against
Norton with only 7 against Redcar. This
aside the Stockton team produced an
impressive display collecting a season high
84 points. James Burton and Matthew Brown
were superb from 3 point range while Redcar
had Paul Neesam and Craig O'Malley to thank
for winning the game.

Burton Signs For Norton B
Norton have signed James Burton to play for
their young B team ahead of the fixture
against Redcar Mariners this Thursday.
Burton is currently studying at Prior
Pursglove College, Guisborough but travels
to Durham to play for Wildcats in the
National U18 League. At only 16 years old he
is a strong guard who can also play forward.
James is very comfortable on the ball and
has a good shot both in and outside the 3
point line. His presence will be a boost to
the team who gained their first win two
weeks ago. Coach, James Thomson said "We are
happy to welcome James into the squad. He
will improve us and compliments our youth
policy."

Norton Win but Don\'t Win!
Norton Knights had thought they were back to
winning ways after a mid season slump. They
left tonight's game celebrating a 63-56
victory over Ormesby Tigers only to later
discover a mistake on the score sheet. The
score had gone from 33 to 40 (the scorer had
mistaken 33 for 38). To Norton\'s credit it
was their officials who noted the mistake
and immediately contacted the League. A
decision by the Management Committee is now
awaited.

The Heat is On!
Hartlepool Heat remain top of Division One
after three games with no losses. Fellow
Hartlepudlians; Hornets are in second place
after their first victory last Sunday over
Ormesby Tigers. It would seem that the
Championship is destined for Hartlepool's
direction with both Pools teams being so
dominant this season. Norton Knights nearly
placed a spanner in the works of Heat,
travelling with an improved squad after
recent games of only six or seven players.
Heat though, came through to record a 9
point win over the Knights and effectively,
barring a miracle, finish any Norton hopes
of the Championship. In Division Two a
resurgent Richmond Vikings continued their
impressive result and first win of 2006/7 by
beating league leaders Nunthorpe Velocity in
Middlesbrough. The Vikings, having suffered
a 1 point loss on their home court had one
thing on their mind when they came to Kings
Academy and it showed. This result will be
music to the ears of West Redcar Mariners
who are still in the chase with Nunthorpe
and now Richmond.
Division One
Hartlepool Heat 69-60 Norton Knights
A
Adam Turner won the tip for Heat and Graeme
Errington opened the scores. The action was
non stop in front of a big crowd as Sean
McKezie forced a Norton turnover and was
then fouled going to the basket. He missed
both free throws, allowing Mark Finmore to
counter with the fast break for Knights.
Knights then took the lead with good play
from Raymond Jackson and Mark Winter, the
latter converting a 3 point 'and 1' play.
With good all round play from both sides the
game had the feel of an All Star game. In
the final seconds of the second quarter
Norton showed signs of fatigue as Heat made
three fast breaks to secure an 8 point lead
at half time with the scores at 35-27.
The third quarter was good for Heat as
Graham Ord continued his fine form under the
basket and with Knights trying to double
team Ord this allowed Nick Donnison and
Andrew Ray wide open shots which they
converted. By the fourth quarter Knights
were trailing by 13. Through Jenkins and
Finmore Knights forged a 9-4 run and were
looking to close the gap until Rob Ivey and
Mike Wassell fouled out. The Heat
capitalised with the unstoppable Ord
instigating a 10-0 run to close the game.
Norton had one final surge in the last
minute and actually won the quarter by 4
points but Heat had done enough to win this
hard fought, thrilling game which could have
gone either way. The superb display by
Graham Ord earned him the MVP leading his
team with 16 points. Mark Finmore was the
games top scorer with 17 points for Norton.
Hartlepool Hornets 65-56 Ormesby
Specsavers Tigers
The first quarter opened and finished fairly
even with both teams scoring 13 points and
good early work from Robert Brown of Tigers
and Mike James of Hornets. The defence of
Hornets left a little to be desired and if
it wasn't for Tigers missing too many they
could have taken the lead. The second
quarter was another under par performance
from the usually methodical Hornets although
better than the first. With key players
missing in Lee Norton and Dale Burrell and
an injury to linchpin Bruce Marshall, Tigers
were trying their best to take advantage
with Lee Woolams finding his range inside
the key. Stuart Anderson and Ste Harrington
did well enough for Hornets though to lead
by 9 at half time. The second half was a
bruising encounter as both teams battled for
an important victory and going right to the
wire until the final six minutes when
Hornets Malcolm Royal chipped in with a
sterling performance to secure a 9 point
victory, scoring 10 of the teams 15 final
quarter points. Tigers' Lee Woolams was the
games top scorer with 21 and the MVP was
awarded to Malcolm Royal for his late
dramatics and an all round good defensive
display.
Division Two
Nunthorpe Velocity 68-77 Richmond
Vikings
The first half was a free scoring affair
with Ryan Dixon nailing two early three
pointers for Richmond and Lewis Tovey
driving hard to pick up points under the
basket for Velocity. The difference however
would be the impressive haul of 19 points
including three straight unanswered fast
breaks by Vikings' Chris Lyle. Both teams
traded the lead and as the half time buzzer
loomed Velocity forward Chris Tappenden shot
a 3 pointer from way behind the line to
secure a morale boosting basket and edge the
half by a single point at 41-40.
The third saw a fired up Richmond pull away
to lead by 12 at one stage, the result of
tight defence on Lewis Tovey, Chris
Tappenden and Richard Baister. The trio
struggled with their new found shackles but
in the seventh minute managed to pull the
game back to an 8 point deficit. Velocity
pushed forward in their attempt to rescue
the game but the height advantage and a
strong bench of the Vikings proved decisive,
as did the match winning solo MVP
performance of Chris Lyle who poured in a
massive 38 points for Richmond. Lewis Tovey
and Chris Tappenden collected 26 and 16
respectively for Nunthorpe.

Egglescliffe On Hold
The basketball sessions at Egglescliffe have
been placed on hold for the time being. The
session has been slow to develop so the
participants have been encouraged to attend
the new coaching sessions that will take
place at Billingham Campus on Fridays. This
is by no means the end of basketball at
Egglescliffe but the facility and location
of Billingham Campus is ideal to develop a

basketball players throughout the Borough of
Stockton can enjoy. Please pass this message

New Home For New Club
After months of trying to locate a suitable
venue to develop a new basketball club we
have finally found one in Billingham Campus
School. The venue is great with a superb,
well lit and modern sports hall as well as
two further sports halls and new changing
facilities. The centre will also provide a
base for the basketball parties and future
Game Time events. We are looking forward to
a good relationship with the centre and have
already been allocated a display board for
our club. The manager of the centre, Tracy
Farnaby added "I\'m happy to receive the
basketball session in our centre. There is a
lot of interest, especially within the
school and its great that a bridge can now
be linked from the school to professional
coaching in a proper out of school club.
The format for the new club will be:
5-6.30pm Juniors (under 15)
6-8pm Seniors (over 15)
!2 per session
The new club will be named Stockton Lions,
representing Stockton on Tees Borough and
the wider Teesside region. A senior and
junior team will be entered into the
Teesside local leagues next season whilst a
female team, already in development at
Blakeston school will also train from the
venue and enter a league when ready.
This will mark some exciting times for Game
Time and the new Lions club. With this new
base we will continue developing basketball
in the area, providing satellite sessions at
other venues including Total Fitness and
creating a centre of excellence at
Billingham Campus. James Thomson added "The
facility is fantastic and perfectly suited
to what we need to go to the next level. We
can now bring everyone together and improve
and qualify players, referees, table
officials and coaches."
