The Teesside Basketball League hosted the
annual TBL CVL (Central Venue League) with
over 120 players showing off their skills
during the Jan 5th Competition, which took
place at Eston Sports Academy. Four teams
were involved in the Division One League and
eight
teams were battling for honours in Division
Two.
“The event is an excellent way for the teams
to come together after Christmas, run off
the turkey and enjoy a great day” added
event organiser; Steve Lynas.
In Division One, Lions v Heat was the
opening game with Heat starting the better
team and Lions unable to come back, 46-38.
Richmond then beat Hartlepool Hornets 23-27
and came close to beating the Heat, down by
only 1 point at half time but Heat held
their nerve to win by 7 points. Heat were
now favourites to win the competition and
only needed to beat Hornets to claim the
honours, which they did fairly comfortably
beating their local rivals by 11.
The
game of the day was between Lions and
Richmond in D1. Lions started the game with
6’10” Argentine; Carlos Alemanno tipping the
ball to Steve Butler who then threw the
alley oop pass to the leaping Luke Thompson
for an explosive dunk which brought the
whole of Eston to its feet. The
entertainment didn’t stop there, as Thompson
made another 4 dunks during a game in which
Lions scored a massive 63 points in only 20
mins running clock.
Division Two was a hive of activity with
seven teams fighting for second place. The
high flying Norton Bulls were
guaranteed first place after their first few
games, winning each one more than
comfortably. Richmond B came closest to
causing an upset as the youngsters held the
Bulls to 16-10 score line. Bulls won all six
of their games to be crowned Champions.
Second place, would not be so easy however,
as TU Lions B, Velocity and Easingwold all
finished with 4 wins and 2 losses to tie
with 14 points each. Lions beat Easingwold
but were beaten by Velocity and Velocity
beat Lions but were beaten by Easingwold,
which meant that the final positions would
be decided by points scored meaning the
Lions with 118 scored would finish as
runners up. Velocity and Easingwold finished
on 108 and 96 respectively.
