Big Ben
Back in Chime for Darfield?
Ben
Robinson is targeting a return to competitive
action against Darfield in the National Founders
Cup game at Eston Sports Academy on Sunday 25th
January. The 6'5" forward is due to have his
plaster cast removed 12 days prior to the game
and will undergo some intense physio to rebuild
the fractured wrist he ironically injured away
to Darfield. The news is a massive boost to
Lions who will progress to the last 16 if they
beat their opponents. Robinson said "I would
love to play in this game and all my thoughts
are focussed on being ready."
Another player hoping to be fit in time is Ryon
Dixon, ho twisted his ankle two weeks ago. Dixon
will be undergoing physio treatment at
Middlesbrough College although it is not certain
he will be ready for the game. One player who
will definitely not be lacing his boots will be
Daniel Cooper. Cooper tore his right ankle
tendon in a dramatic encounter with Holyhead
Celts four days before Christmas and having
begun a 12 week rehabilitation period with
physio's, the guard is likely to miss the rest
of the season. "I am walking gingerly and have
trouble with stairs but its good to be on the
mend" added Cooper.

Juniors Show Improvements Against Durham
Middlesbrough Lions U15 43-68 Durham
Wildcats
Middlesbrough's U15 National League side
showed massive improvements against Durham
Wildcats at Eston Sports Academy. A 15-13
lead in the first quarter and down only 6pts
at the half was an indication of how well
the young Lions are developing. When Lions
played at Durham they were on the wrong side
of a 94-52 result. Lions looked worthy of a
flutter in the first half, but a
disorientated display on offense in the
second half caused them problems, despite
good defence throughout the game. For full

Lions
Awarded Holyhead Win!
Middlesbrough Lions were awarded a 20-0
victory by England Basketball yesterday for
the Lions v Holyhead Celts fixture which
took place at Eston Sports Academy on Sunday
gone. Lions experienced a catalogue of
misfortune including the loss of two key
players during the game resulting in a
deflated performance and a 35pt loss.
Middlesbrough though enjoyed some good
fortune when Simon Turton, head of the
National Founders Cup informed the club of
the news, stating that the referee reported
that Holyhead Celts had not brought with
them their player license cards and in line
with the rules of England Basketball, the
game was awarded as a 20-0 win for
Middlesbrough.
This now means Lions have everything to play
for in their next National Founders Cup game
at home to Darfield and if the club beat the
Barnsley based side by more than 5pts, Lions
will progress to the last 16 of the
competition. Club coach Sid Nicholls was
over the moon with the news adding "You win
some, you lose some... and sometimes you
lose and win!"
Coach James Thomson was also pleasantly
surprised by the news saying "The first I
knew, was from an unhappy text from Holyhead
Coach; Neil Williams and I can understand
their frustrations and disappointment,
however we hadn't complained as a club, the
report came from the referee and the
decision has provided a bit of Christmas
cheer in what was turning out to be a
terrible week."
Middlesbrough face Darfield on Sunday 25th
January at Eston Sports Academy, 4pm Tip.
Middlesbrough
guard, Daniel Cooper is recovering well at
home in Billingham after tearing his left
ankle tendon during Sundays game against
Holyhead Celts. The 23 year old spent three
hours at James Cook Hospital in
Middlesbrough undergoing tests to ascertain
the extent of the damage. "Thankfully, the
damage is not career threatening and
although it will take Daniel a while to get
back on his feet, with some thorough physio
we hope to have him back to full strength in
a few months."
The recent injuries that has plagued the
club has led to speculation that more
signings will be made before the January
31st deadline, although the club have been
quick to play down these rumours. "We are
happy with the squad we have. Our season has
been one of inconsistency, mainly due to our
injury problems but when we have close to a
full squad we have been impressive. There
may be an addition to the squad but we are
certainly not panicking." added Lions coach;
James Thomson. Lions overall priority is to
ensure there is an element of competition
for places in training to bring out the best
and ensure injuries wont affect results as
has been the case in some games this season.
Norton Hydraulics 26-39 Middlesbrough Lions
Middlesbrough Lions ladies team travelled to
Stockton to play the Norton Hydraulics in a
tense game with both teams playing hard
defence, reflecting in the low score. It was
a battle of the big players in the middle as
Brittany Krimsky endured more than a few
blows with the physically powerful Norton
players. For full match report click

Drama
Unfolds as Lions Beaten by Celts
It was an eventful day at Eston Sports
Academy as Middlesbrough Lions lost the game
after an unfortunate series of events which
led to a 45 minute delay of the game. Lions
were down by 1pt in the sixth minute of the
second quarter and playing very well when
Daniel Cooper landed on an opponents foot
and turning his ankle. The injury was very
concerning with a large swelling forming
immediately and Cooper struggling with the
pain. Paramedics attended and administered
gas but due to the level of pain gave an
injection of morphine. During the delay,
which lasted more than 45 minutes, new
signing; Steve Butler had to rush from the
game to a family emergency leaving Lions two
key players down. On the restart there was
more heartache for Middlesbrough as Damian
Warriner picked up his third foul, then
fourth for a technical foul, restricting his
involvement. When the lively guard returned
to the game in the third quarter he picked
up his fifth foul for a charge leaving Lions
without three of their key players.
At half time, Lions were doing well with a
score line of 42-46 in favour of the Welsh
outfit, but the momentum was swinging the
way of the visitors and the mental strain of
losing Cooper to such an injury, a 45min
hold up and then losing Butler was affecting
the players and coaching staff alike. In the
third quarter Lions were outscored 14-32 and
in the fourth quarter 7-20 which provided
Holyhead with a 35pt win, 63-98.
Middlesbrough have a very concerning injury
list with Ben Robinson, James Thomson, Ryon
Dixon and now Daniel Cooper all sidelined.
Dixon
Out For Three Weeks
Middlesbrough shooting guard; Ryon Dixon
will be out for three weeks after twisting
his ankle at Training last night. This will
be a big blow for both the player and club
as preparations are now affected for
tomorrows visit of Holyhead. Dixon's outside
threat will be missed but the player is
hoping to be back soon. Speaking as he
recovers at home in Darlington, "Its very
painful at the moment and there is a lot of
black bruising, but there are no major
problems and once its settled I will begin
strengthening." Lions Coach Sid Nicholls
added "I'm gutted for the lad, his perimeter
shooting is one of the best on our team, so
we will have to work even harder tomorrow"
Elliot
The Hero For Macmillan
Stockton
Pioneers were the visitors to Macmillan
Academy to face the Magic with both teams
looking at an opportunity to gain a win
after some difficult introductory games in
the Tees College League. The game started
nervously for both sides and was initially
very close until Darry Caldwell and Gavin
Baxter led Pioneers on a 10-0 run late in
the first quarter to bring the end score
line to 14-9.
In the second and third quarters Stockton
maintained the pressure as the players from
Riverside College held the edge over their
magic opponents and by the end of the third
period, Magi were down 10pts, 33-23.
Macmillan started 4th quarter strong with
Steve Cook grabbing rebounds and passing the
outlet to Matthew Elliot who responded with
a string of baskets to bring the home team
back in the game. Macmillan then took the
lead 40-39 through James Scott with just one
minute remaining to provide a tense thriller
of an ending. Caldwell then hit a jump shot
to give Stockton the lead with 45 seconds
left and in the final second of the game
Elliot drove to the basket, being fouled in
the process to send the aspiring doctor to
the line for two free throws, converting
both attempts and with no time left on the
clock won the game 42-41.
Darry Caldwell was excellent throughout for
Stockton but Cook and MVP Elliot turned the
game in the fourth quarter to provide a
memorable first win for the Macmillan Magic.
Prior
Take Pride in Win Despite Controversy
Prior Pumas 67-47 Newcastle College
Prior Pumas produced a comfortable win over
visiting Newcastle College in the BCS Cup
although the game was marred with
controversy with the visiting coach, Graham
Heath not happy with the quality of
refereeing. The game itself though was held
together well by seasoned ref; Chris Powlay
who rose above the distractions from the
sideline, as did the Pumas who at the end of
the day put the ball in the basket more
times than their opponents and were worthy
winners.
The game was close in the first quarter as
both teams traded basket for basket. Matthew
Brown and Jack Sanders did well for Pumas
while talented Jon Mitchinson and Kevin
Ashong played the part for Newcastle. At the
end of the first quarter the scores favoured
Prior ever so slightly 22-19. In the second
quarter Pumas came alive as they outscored
their rivals 11-5. After half time
Hutchinson took the game by the scruff of
the neck as the 6'4" guard hit all of
Newcastle's 10pts in the third as well as
two early 3 pointers in the fourth.
Unfortunately for Newcastle Prior never
looked in trouble with a number of players
scoring points, most notably Brown and
Sanders who continued to exploit lazy
defence. With three minutes remaining
Sanders and Tom McCormick both fired 3
pointers and by the end of the game Pumas
were in the lead by 20pts.
The MVP was awarded to Jack Sanders who was
in top form collecting a team high 25pts.
Matthew Brown provided good support with 22.
Jon Hutchinson was impressive for Newcastle
as he top scored on 35pts.
Prior Coach; James Thomson added "One of the
referees was not enjoying his best day, but
that was the case for both sides and there
was no element of bias, to even suggest this
was very disappointing."
Stockton Slammers Back On Top!
Stockton Slammers 82-40 Stockton Pioneers
Stockton 6th Form Slammers are back on top
of the Tees College League after their third
win of the season, an emphatic 42pt victory
over local rivals Stockton Pioneers.
Pioneers are still without a win but the
fact they have played four games keeps them
fifth in the table and the young side are
improving all the time. On this occasion
Darry Caldwell was the player of the game
for Pioneers as he led the game as top
scorer with 25pts. The victorious Slammers
however enjoyed a great offensive display
with every player marking the score sheet
and four in double figures as Brett Green
19, Umar Malik 15, Luke Moran 14 and Tom
Syzman 12 all impressed. John Gaunt was
especially useful on defence and chipped in
with 9pts for the current league leaders.
Brett Green was voted MVP for the game.
Slammers coach Lorna Connor was pleased with
the performance adding "It was a derby game
so was important for local pride to play
well. As a team we were very impressive"
Pioneers player/coach; Gavin Baxter remains
upbeat despite their latest loss, "We are a
new side and this is our first introduction
to competitive college basketball. We know
the areas we need to improve and we aim to
do so, but we are enjoying the campaign and
look forward to picking up some wins in the
new year."
Local Legend Signs In Time For Sunday Game
As Middlesbrough
Lions prepare for the big visit of Holyhead
Celts this Sunday, the club have announced a
major new signing in the most successful
basketball player on Teesside with 13
National Championships. Steve Butler will
now don the Lions jersey after being the
most successful Teesside Mohawks player in
the clubs history and will feature against
Holyhead Celts at Eston Sports Academy in
the National Founders Cup. The game is a 4pm
tip off although spectators are advised to
arrive before 3.30.
The signature of Butler represents a huge
indication of Middlesbrough’s ambitions with
Lions coach James Thomson looking for the
club to make amends for away defeats to
Darfield and Holyhead. “Steve is a great
signing for us, both on and off the court.
He will be mainly used as a forward as this
is the position we are short in. Although he
is small, he has a proven rebounding ability
and will be an asset on Sunday.”
Lions are looking forward to the encounter
and will be looking to avenge the 28 point
defeat in Wrexham earlier this season.
Middlesbrough travelled with a depleted
squad for this fixture when Holyhead star,
Adam Williams punished the Lions with
incredible stats of 40pts, 16 rebounds, 7
assists and 2 blocks. The powerful forward
exploited every Middlesbrough weakness and
was able to score at will inside and outside
the perimeter.
Middlesbrough have a near full strength
squad with the only exception of Ben
Robinson, who is still recovering from a
broken wrist and wont be available to mid
January and James Thomson, who played well
against York despite nursing a dislocated
shoulder but has been added to the injury
list with knee tendonitis and an Achilles
strain. The addition of Butler will
compensate in rebounds and defensive
presence that would have been lost by
Robinson’s absence and with small forward;
Rob Bryson is splendid form recently, Lions
are looking as strong as they have ever been
all season. Another big performance from Lee
Woolams will also be required to follow up
the centre’s MVP display against York
Vikings. On the guards front, Lions welcome
back Daniel Cooper and Ryon Dixon who both
missed the York game.

Thompson Sinks Brave Lions
The
TBL has been treated to no fewer
than four top class games in the
last two weeks with this fixture
topping off a fortnight to
remember for local basketball
fans. The previously unbeaten
Sonics were looking set for
their first loss as Lions
dominated the majority of the
game.
James Burton was on top form and
had good support from an
energetic Rob Bryson and debut
game for Dean Hanson. Michael
Thompson though stood almost
alone in rescuing the Sonics
from the clutches of defeat with
a number of crucial baskets to
first of all take the game into
over time and then to lead the
Norton based SCM to a memorable
victory.
Lions remain in third place and
are now effectively out of the
title race after losing four
games this season and although
anything is still possible, the
club will be hoping a full
strength squad will be available
for the cup competitions and New
Year Tournament as a route to
some silverware this season.

Sharks
Prove Why They Are The Best
Sheffield Sharks were the
visitors to Eston Sports Academy
and came to Middlesbrough as the
best U15 team in the country,
playing in terrific form and
scoring points for fun. It would
be Lions though who would draw
first blood as Shane Beadle
collected the ball from a
Patrick O’Connor assist and
continued to the basket for a
close range shot. This would be
one of the very few times though
that Lions would break the
Sharks full court press and
after Beadle’s initial basket
Sharks produced a devastating
13-0 run with most baskets
coming from lay ups after
steals.
Lions will look to bounce back
from this defeat with a big game
against Durham Wildcats at Eston
Sports Academy on 21st December. Click

Seniors & U15
Nat 4.30-6pm
Lions A v SCM
Supersonics 6.15pm Tip
Williams & McGrath Provide Darlo & Rhinos
With First Wins
There
were three great games of basketball
yesterday as Darlington College and Redcar
Rhinos earned their first wins of the season
in emphatic fashion and Queen Elizabeth
continued their dominance as they overcame
the previously unbeaten Stockton Slammers.
Darlington hosted Stockton Pioneers and
after a close first quarter, 12-10 in favour
of the home side, they began to pull away
through the talented Mark Williams and
powerful big man Anthony Humes who was just
too strong inside the key for Pioneers. The
second period was a tough one for the
visitors as Darlington outscored Pioneers
18-9, Williams collecting 11 of his 19pts in
this period alone. Anthony Humes would
finish the game with 16 and a good late run
by David Cansfield contributed another 6pts
as Darlington coach, Ryon Dixon ran the
bench well. Pioneers also gave their squad
good court time with Lee Cessford putting on
a good show along with Darry Caldwell, both
players adding 7pts apiece. The star of the
show for Stockton though was Gavin Baxter
who collected an impressive 17pts including
two 3 pointers in the second half.
Macmillan Magic found their visit to
Redcar's brand new college and impressive
sports hall a little overwhelming as they
struggled to mark the score sheet for eight
minutes. Redcar meanwhile were having no
such problem as Steven Jones, James McGrath
and Kemroy Wallace all combined to produce a
12-0 run. Nedas Laurinavicios broke the
spell with 1of2 free throws and by the end
of the first quarter, Rhinos were most
definitely in charge 22-3.
In the second quarter Macmillan began to
settle into a scoring way with Matthew
Elliot finding his shot and James Scott
hitting the target mid way through. The
Redcar outfit though were just too strong as
Joe McCormick entered the fray with 8
straight points to aid a half time lead of
40-11. Another 12-0 run would do irreparable
damage to Magic's hopes of sparking a
comeback and with attacking options
throughout the side Redcar were in cruise
control adding another 15pts in this quarter
to Magic's 4.
In the final quarter, Macmillan gave their
all and finally started to show what they
are made of. Magic would actually outscore
their hosts 12-14 in this period with Elliot
on fire from just outside the key,
collecting 10pts. Karl Bentley enjoyed an
extended run in the game and made his mark
when he scored a nice lay up in the final
minute. Steven Davies then hit the final
shot of the game to a rapturous cheer from
the home crowd as Redcar secured a 67-29
victory. Matthew Elliot led the scorers with
16pts and Redcar were very impressive with
five players in double figures including
James McGrath on 14pts.
Full match
reports and photos to follow shortly.
Bell and Rowe Shine
For All Stars Despite Tappenden Flurry
As the last session before Christmas, a
friendly game was organised for the U12
players at Game Time's Macmillan session.
Both teams chose a nickname with one being
called the All stars and their opponents,
The Eagles. The Eagles struggled to begin
with as the All stars went on a 12-0 run as
Chris Bell hit the first two baskets of the
game. Bell and team mate Tommy Rowe would
share 6pts apiece in the first four minutes
of play to shock the Eagles. In the sixth
minute James Tappenden received a nice pass
from Oliver Morgan and proceeded to hit a
nice shot off the backboard from close
range. Eagles continued to struggle as All
stars produced another strong run of points,
this time Connor Skip getting in on the
action with some nice cuts resulting in easy
baskets for small forward. James Tappenden
hit two more shots as the half drew to a
close to provide a glimmer of hope for the
Eagles, but their movement was poor and as a
team were not getting close enough to the
basket to make good shots.
In the second Jack Halcon and Isobel Morgan
became more involved with some good movement
off the ball and simple passing to ensure
their teams did not lose possession. Tommy
Rowe continued his fine form as he made the
next 6pts. Rowe is showing excellent
potential and is not afraid to hustle for
the ball. With five minutes remaining Oliver
Morgan and Anthony dyne began to have more
of an impact after a very quiet first half.
Dyne would hit the final three shots of the
game but All Stars were still comfortable
with a 16pt cushion to finish the game as
winners.

Teesside Basketball League
Middlesbrough lions this week played their
part in two of the best games this season as
they lost at Richmond Vikings by 5pts in a
game, referee; Steve Lynas described as the
best game he has ever see in over 10 years
of TBL involvement. Lions again travelled
with a weakened side and have lost realistic
hope of clinching the title, having now been
beaten by Richmond twice. Richmond have also
beaten last season’s champs Hartlepool Heat
to confirm their stance as serious
contenders in a dramatic turnaround from the
last campaign which saw them win only one
game all season. Tomorrow Lions host joint
leaders SCM Supersonics, unbeaten along with
Richmond in a game which will define Lions
season.
After this disappointment Lions then
travelled to Hartlepool to play current
champions Heat. Overall, this game provided
a great advert for local basketball with two
top teams full of talent putting on a show.
The game changed lead throughout and
although the leads enjoyed by Heat were more
impressive, Middlesbrough did enough to
deserve the game. Lee Davie and Adam Turner
were excellent throughout and the almost
invisible Ian Barrow proved what a good
player he is as he silently added 22pts.
Anthony Robinson was the player of the game
for Heat with 28pts including six 3's. For
Lions Chris Leighton was a true asset in the
first half while Luke Thompson proved just
as valuable in the second, finishing the
game’s top scorer with 29. Lions had five
players in double figures. James Burton and
Alex Moore both played well, as did Daniel
Cooper who stepped up at crucial times with
big shots.
The MVP was awarded to Alex Moore of
Middlesbrough who led the game in three
categories with 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 6
steals as well as chipping in 24pts
A well under strength Mariners were always
up against it with only five players against
the might of Tigers in a game which would
see the eventual victors win by a massive
57pts. Tigers big hitters Rob Harland and
Lee Woolams were back after missing the
recent defeat to SCM Supersonics and both
players were active with 35 & 28pts
respectively but the surprise package came
in the form of young David Tingle who hit a
career high 26pts as the 16 year old enjoyed
a good run. Craig O’Malley top scored for
Redcar with 24pts.
Tees Schools League
Blakeston Bulls managed the biggest win of
the season so far as they beat Norton by
50pts. The Bulls main threat was an
impressive display from Callum Foster with
29pts. Coach Tony Harrington was pleased
with the result adding “We want to build on
our success from last season and we have
started well.”
Game of Week
Richmond Vikings 86-81 Middlesbrough Lions
Burton exploded lions into life with the
first 5pts and a further 12pts from Alex
Moore ensured a healthy start for Lions. For
Vikings Craig Nicholson raised his game in
response with 5pts but Richmond were down 2
at the end of the quarter, 17-19.
The second quarter is where Lions collapsed
under a devastating barrage of baskets by
Richmond, instigated by a Ryon Dixon 3
pointer, 1 of 5 successful 3’s in this
quarter alone. Jaycie Hall, Lee Norton and
Chris Lyle added 4pts apiece to outscore the
visitors 27-6 for a 44-25 score line at half
time. Alex Moore struggled to find the
target during this quarter with a number of
shots failing to drop.
Something special was required to resurrect
the Lions and they put in a good shift in
the third quarter as James Thomson hit a
shot from the baseline. Nicholson responded
immediately for Vikings but a ratio of 2
Lions baskets for each Viking basket was
developing and with Michael Wassell and Alex
Moore combining well they were beginning to
claw their way back. By the eighth minute
Middlesbrough had reduce their deficit to
10pts, a margin which would remain at the
end of the quarter thanks to a Chris Lyle
fast break.
The final quarter was one of ultimate
excitement and tension as Vikings started
the better through a Lyle lay up followed by
a Lee Norton 3 pointer. Moore replied with
two strong drives through traffic but in the
third minute Nicholson again stepped up with
a brace of baskets and Mike James chipped in
with a nice move to secure a 15pt advantage,
63-78. Middlesbrough once again rallied some
spirit and where many players would have
lost hope the guys produced a 13-2 run with
Moore continuing his blistering scoring run
adding 8pts, Chris Lyle adding the rest
including a 3 to bring Lions within 4pts
with just two minutes remaining. With time
ticking away, Lions had to foul to stop the
clock and Richmond did admirably under
pressure converting 6of8 free throws and
despite a late Burton 3 pointer Richmond
earned a great 5pt victory over a team
considered favourites at the start of the
season.
Middlesbrough star; Alex Moore was superb in
all but the second quarter and would finish
as top scorer on 44pts. For Vikings Ryon
Dixon and Chris Lyle led the scoring with 22
& 21 respectively including the significant
15pts from five Dixon 3’s in the second
period. The MVP though was awarded to Craig
Nicholson who enjoyed his best performance
of the season with 14pts, but more crucially
baskets at critical times as well as a big
presence on defence.
Lions
Repel Vikings In Yorkshire Derby
Middlesbrough Lions got back to
winning ways with a comfortable
16pt win over York Vikings at
Eston Sports Academy. In the
absence of big man Ben Robinson,
who fractured his wrist last
week, Lee Woolams and Rob Bryson
combined well at the back of
defence for Lions as they both
dominated the rebounds early in
the game.
York took the lead through a
sweet 3 pointer from Richard Grainger
although Lee Woolams was quick to respond
for Lions with a well timed shot off the
backboard. Vikings then extended their lead
when Liam Hudson made a shot off the
dribble. In the second minute Woolams again
worked his magic inside the key to instigate
a 9-0 run.

Good
Show at British Colleges
A great show from Teesside based Colleges at
the British Colleges Sports Tournament in
Newcastle witnessed five local teams compete
in the competition. Prior Pursglove Pumas,
Hartlepool 6th Form Hurricanes,
Middlesbrough College, Stockton 6dth Form
Slammers and Queen Elizabeth all took part,
the best representation from any region and
an indication of the effect the newly formed
Tees College Basketball League is having in
the area. It is expected that another three
or four local colleges could participate in
next years event, with such a strong local
college league in which there are 11
members.

Thrilling Encounter Edges Lions Way
Middlesbrough
Lions reduced Hartlepool's chances of
retaining their league title as they beat
the Heat by 6pts in one of the best games of
the season. Lions brought a well stocked
team for once and were without the injured
Ben Robinson but had just enough to take the
well earned victory that puts Lions into
third place in the table, level on points
with Richmond and SCM Supersonics, but have
played two more games. Heat move up one
place to fifth with three losses and only
one win this season.
Hartlepool started well as they
opened the game with a 3 pointer from Sean
McKenzie. Alex Moore responded for Lions
with a nice drive but Heat quickly took a
7-2 lead with the graceful Adam Turner
adding a brace of baskets in the second
minute. By the mid way point of the first
quarter Lions were trailing by 3pts soon to
be 8pts when Anthony Robinson hit a 3
followed by the increasingly unstoppable Lee
Davie driving strong for a close range shot
of the backboard. For full match report and

Lions
v York Vikings This Sunday
Eston Sports Academy 4pm Tip Off
Middlesbrough
Lions are playing the York Vikings at Eston
Sports Academy this Sunday. Arrive prior to
3.30pm for the team intros. The game tips off at
4pm.
Lions, who travelled to Darfield last week with
only 6 players look to have 4 or 5 players back
in the squad, although the late breaking news of
Ben Robinson’s fractured wrist presents a
massive blow to the clubs ambitions of
progressing in the National Founders Cup. Big
Ben will be out for two months after picking up
the injury at Darfield.
On a positive note, Michael Wassell, Rob Bryson
and Damian Warriner all look set to return to
the squad for the York game. York will bring
with them a mix of youth and experience when
they visit Eston. The Vikings have an excellent
Under 18 squad, who are currently topping the
National League U18 Division and more than a few
of their players have been drafted in for this
fixture. A fast paced game is anticipated with
both sides looking to earn the title of North
Yorkshire Top Dogs.
Tickets are on sale now at Eston Sports Academy.

Robinson
Blow For Lions
Lions Big Man, Ben Robinson is out of action
for two months after fracturing his wrist
against Darfield last week. Big Ben battled
his way to the end of the game but an X Ray
has revealed the fracture, which is
relatively small, but enough to keep the
forward sidelined. This will represent a
massive blow to Lions hopes of progressing
in the National Founders Cup. A full
strength Lions should still be enough but
with various injuries, illness and other
factors, Middlesbrough have yet to display a
full strength team in the competition.
In Local League Alex Moore returned to
Middlesbrough Lions against Richmond Vikings
and put in a sterling performance as he top
scored with 44pts.
30/11/08
Lions Do
Everything But Win With Under Strength Team
Barnsley was the latest
destination for Middlesbrough
Lions in the National Founders
Cup, albeit with only five and a
half players, player coach James
Thomson nursing a recent
dislocated shoulder. Due to a
recent flu bug and numerous
injuries the depleted Lions
would face Darfield in a cold,
1960's sports hall but it would
be the under strength Lions who
would fair better than the full
squad of the home team,
producing at times their best
basketball of the season. This
against a Darfield team that beat
Holyhead Celts by 20pts.
Lions will now
be looking to get a good win as well as a
good performance when York Vikings visit
Eston Sports Academy this Sunday.

Late Arrival Inspires Late Rhino Charge
Redcar Rhinos 56-64 Prior Pumas
Prior arrived at Redcar less than an hour after
playing Hartlepool 6th Form for this one day
double header. Prior were reeling after a poor
show against Hartlepool Hurricanes and this next
game would provide an opportunity for an
immediate response. Redcar meanwhile were taking
the same view after being beaten in a close game
the previous week against Stockton Slammers.
The
Rhinos were first on the charge after James
McGrath out leaped Matthew Norman to win the
tip and then continued down the court to
convert the lay up for the first 2pts.
Steven Jones with the nice pass for the
assist. Prior's response was immediate and
powerful.

Findlay &
Beadle Provide Late Inspiration For Victory
Gateshead Hawks 52-54 Middlesbrough Lions
U15
Gateshead was the destination
for the Lions Junior stars this
week, fresh on the bounce of a
thrilling win at home to North
Shields Storm. Lions travelled
with a strong squad and for the
first time were entering a game
where Lions were the slight
favourites, as the Hawks remain
rooted to the bottom of the
league with no wins. Despite
this, Lions coach; James Thomson
knows nothing can be taken for
granted at National level and
Hawks would be looking at this
game as an opportunity to gain
3pts.
Lions are now
mid table with 9pts in the U15 National
League Table and their second consecutive
victory has given the whole club a big
boost. After the game a revitalised fourth
quarter performance from big man Shane
Beadle was discussed with the 6'6" centre
adding "I felt really good in the last
quarter, I don't know what happened but I
just didn't want to lose."

Friendly Fixture
Game Time and Middlesbrough Lions are
arranging a friendly game between players
from their session at Saltburn and the
session at Middlesbrough. The game is still
to be arranged but the club wanted to assure

Lions A
Travel to Easingwold
Lions A team will travel to Easingwold
Vikings this Sunday in the TBL Division 1.
Easingwold are still without a win, but
always play better at home and have a bigger
squad to chose from. Lions will be hoping to
take a healthy team down to Easingwold,
which is just off the A19, near York.
Easingwold will be playing in their brand
new sports hall which opened October 5th and
is situated next to the old sports hall.
Players and spectators are to meet at
Macmillan Academy for 6pm to travel down for
a 7.15pm tip.

Macmillan
Head 4pts Clear
Macmillan Magic are now 4pts clear at the
top of the U14 league after convincing wins
at Norton Knights on Monday and Freebrough
Flyers on Tuesday. Umair Ghafoor was top dog
at Norton with 10pts in the 12-34 win. Manor
College are in second place but have played
two less games than the leaders and remain
unbeaten.
In the College league Queen Elizabeth got
their season off to a winning start at Prior
Pursglove as they beat the Pumas 42-63. The
game was close until the third quarter when
a 22-0 run put the game beyond the
Guisborough side. Matthew Brown of Pumas top
scored with 24pts and Laurence Bellani put
in a good show late in the game but the
21pts of game MVP; Adam Little along with
19pts from Richard Summerbell was enough to
seal the win.
Darlington based QE move into second place
in the Tees College League, 3pts behind
Stockton Slammers who won their second game
of the season 30-41 at Redcar Rhinos. Rhinos
were within 3pts with two minutes remaining
in the third quarter but some good 3 point
shooting from Brett Green and John Gaunt
extended the margin and Stockton ran out
11pt winners. Brett Green was voted MVP and
also top scored with 19pts.

In the TBL this week, Tigers regained their
composure after the previous loss to
Richmond as they dismantled Nunthorpe with a
59pt win. Lee Woolams was virtually
unstoppable in the centre as the big man ran
circles round the Velocity defence, top
scoring on 33pts. Three more Tigers hit
double figures with Rob Harland, Rob Brown
and Michael Brown collecting 25, 22 & 17
respectively. Ormesby move up one place into
3rd.
In Division 2, Team UCA won their first game
with a 9pt victory over Ryedale. Matthew
Dover was impressive throughout as he
collected 21pts. Roberts and Parker hit 12
apiece in reply for Warriors. Meanwhile
Supersonics went top after clinching the
Richmond game in the final qtr. An
impressive 10pts in the final period from
Darren Butler aided the victory although the
MVP was the talented Musa Khanye who hit 19.
Mark Williams hit 14 for Vikings but this
latest loss leaves the Catterick based
outfit rooted at the bottom.
Tees Schools League
In the TSL, Macmillan Magic earned their
first win of the season in the U14 league
with a 7pt win over Newlands. Umair Ghafoor
was magic for Macmillan but the MVP was

points with 41.

Lions Surge Over Velocity
Middlesbrough Lions A 105-52 Nunthorpe
Velocity
Lions managed a convincing victory despite
only 6 players and then losing their
player/coach to a dislocated shoulder.
Michael Wassell was in awesome rebounding
form, pulling down an incredible 32 boards.
Nunthorpe themselves had only 7 players and
were still reeling from a heavy defeat to
Ormesby Tigers, but the pace and talent of
the Lions was too much, especially in the
second half when Velocity were beginning to
tire. Full report coming soon.

Slam Hartlepool
Stockton 6th Form 69-29 Hartlepool FE
Stockton 6th Form Slammers are top of the table
in the Tees College League, after a dominating
40pt win over Hartlepool FE.
Stockton made good use of the powerful Umar
Malik inside the key as they delivered the ball
to him and he delivered the early baskets. Luke
Moran was also doing well as he ran the lanes
for the fast breaks. Hartlepool replied with
Laura Howe and Jessica Coates creating baskets
but they struggled to find the basket with the
same consistency as their opponents.

Take Huge Victory
Middlesbrough Lions 72-60 Menwith Hill
Cavaliers, USA
Middlesbrough
Lions got their first win on the
National Basketball scene in a
blazing fashion with an awe
inspiring first half performance
which reduced the American
visitors to at times bystanders.
The impressive Lions show
produced a 20pt lead at half
time, although the Americans
composed themselves in the
second half to bring the game to
within 1pt mid way through the
final quarter to provide a
thrilling climax.
The big game began as Lions Rob
Bryson and Cavaliers Aaron Lee leaped for
the jump ball, Lee just outreaching Bryson,
but Menwith failed to capitalise. Ryon Dixon
then opened the flood gates with a big 3 to
instigate a 14-4 run for Lions.

Young
Lions Earn Thrilling First Win Over Storm
Middlesbrough Lions U15 71-70 North Shields
Storm
Middlesbrough Lions U15's beat North Shields
Storm in a thrilling encounter to provide
the youngsters with their first win of the
season.
North Shields Storm were the
visitors to Eston Sports Academy
for Lions first home game in the
Junior National League. The
Storm came to Middlesbrough on
the back of some heavy defeats,
although a win over local rivals
Gateshead Hawks gave them a
timely boost ahead of this
fixture. It must also be said
that the visitors, although
overawed at the magnificent
arena whose centre court they
were about to grace arrived to
Eston in suits and looked very
professional, a trait that Lions
have used for their National
League teams to provide a smart
outlook and sense of unity and
pride.

Lions v
Menwith Hill Preview
Middlesbrough Lions will entertain American
side, Menwith Hill this Sunday at Eston
Sports Academy. Tip off is at 4pm and
spectators are encouraged to arrive before
3.30pm. The club are hoping for a big crowd
to cheer on the Lions against a team of well
drilled military personnel who will be
physically and
mentally strong. Menwith are travelling with
a full squad of 12 including star players
Dave Mackin and Kasim Cheatum. Cheatum plays
at point guard and is a quick and strong
player who controls the ball well and has an
accurate shot from 3 point range. Both
players have been watched by Middlesbrough
scouts already this season and Mackin has
impressed on a number of
occasions.
The 6’2” guard/small forward is a versatile
player with many attributes. He has a good
shot as well as a useful drive and his
rebounding will provide a concern for Lions.
Charlotte Evans will bring her team to
Middlesbrough with one intention of winning
the game.
Middlesbrough have other plans though and
will be looking to capitalise on the absence
of inspirational guard Charlie Fields who
has had to return to the States for personal
reasons. Lions are aware of the potential
threats in the Menwith team, but unlike
other games, this will be a fixture where
Lions are the taller side and the effect
players such as Ben Robinson, Lee Woolams
and Rob Bryson have on the game will
determine the outcome. If Lions taller trio
can dominate the rebounds on defence and
stamp an authority on offence they should
fair better than their American visitors.
Whilst the height advantage may favour
Lions, the role of the guards is not to be
under estimated. Menwith’s strength is in
their guard positions and Lions will rely on
the likes of Damian Warriner and Ryon Dixon
to dilute these threats.
An interesting match up will be between the
hard working small forwards; Michael Wassell
of Lions and Juan Cervantes of Menwith.
What is guaranteed is an exciting and
passionate game of basketball. Tickets are
on sale now at £8 adults and £5 children.

half price offer by printing voucher at

Table and
Refs Refresher Night
The TBL have organised a refresher session
for all table officials and referees within
the Teesside and surrounding area. The
evening will last approx 2 hours and take
place at The Corus Social Club, in
Dormanstown, near Redcar on Thursday 27th
November. Game Time are also looking to
organise a Table Course shortly after so
this session would provide a great
opportunity to prepare for the course as
well as a chance for existing officials to
clarify new rules and brush up on their
skills.
The TBL have also stated that all attendees
will receive a free drink. The session will
be very informal and is intended as a way to
help improve clubs and officials, not test
them. Wade Tovey, chair of TBL added "The
aim is to update and inform those who will
want to do the training. We are keen to
identify demand as a result so we can
combine efforts and ensure we have the
numbers needed for courses for both referees
and table officials. We aim to give a short
overall brief and then split into groups.
Please send your TOs and Refs along and
anybody who might be interested."
The session will be delivered by Jacki
Tyerman for table officials and Dave Murphy
for referees. If possible TOs are asked to
bring along a sample or two of recently
completed score sheets to be given some
tips.
Please contact
Game Time or TBL for more details and to
confirm your place.

Richmond
Catapult To Top Of TBL
Richmond Vikings moved into joint first
place in Division One with two wins in two
days. Richmond beat sister club Easingwold
Vikings 95-62 in their first home game of
the season. Vikings then travelled to
Ormesby Tigers to earn their third win of
the season, 58-74. The impressive early wins
over Middlesbrough Lions and now Tigers have
strengthened their title credentials and
given a massive boost to the Catterick based
side.
In Division Two, Middlesbrough Lions B
remain top after a well earned 38-51 win at
Egglescliffe Explosion. Matthew Brown and
Miles Sayer provided the majority of points
for Lions adding 17 & 14 respectively with
all players marking the score sheet.
Explosion’s Damian Warriner was top scorer
with 20 and had good support from Gary
Ferguson on 12.
SCM Supersonics B are breathing heavily down
the necks of Lions after beating Team UCA
60-30 but their 50-33 loss away to
Egglescliffe has halted their charge. Musa
Khanye and Simon Baker led the scoring with
19 & 13 apiece for Supersonics.
Redcar Mariners B put up a good fight at
Thirsk Thunder and after 1st quarter were up
by 14-9. The 2nd quarter ended at 22-22. It
wasn’t until the final quarter that Thunder
pulled away to secure a 14pt victory 60-46.
Courtney Heugh was impressive for Thirsk
finishing with 21 while Ozhaull, Fisher and
Wright all pitched in with double figures.
Redcar’s Ryan Hodgson hit 10pts in response.

Lions
Outmuscled in Wales
Holyhead Celts 83-56 Middlesbrough Lions
Middlesbrough Lions endured a
torrid time in North Wales with
only 7 players able to travel
including only 1 centre,
arriving late due to traffic
delays on M62 and to top of
their preparations for the clubs
first National Founders Cup
game, the home side dealt a
hefty blow in the first half and
although the Lions actually won
the second half, the game was
decided mid way through the
first quarter.
Lions main problem was their
lack of height with Lee Woolams
the only genuine centre at 6’8”
and Michael Wassell at 6’2”
providing the physical presence
inside which was overshadowed by
a big and powerful Holyhead
side. The Celts were in the
faces of the weary Lions from
the beginning and the aggressive
nature of the home team
unsettled Lions both on offense
and defence.

Prior To
Host Hartlepool in BCS
Prior College Pumas will entertain
Hartlepool FE this Wednesday in the first
round of the British Colleges Sports Cup.
Prior did well in the same round last year
overcoming Tyne Met College 43-92 although
they were soundly beaten in the next round
by eventual winners Norton College of
Sheffield. This year the Guisborough based
outfit are looking to go one step better and
although they have lost last season’s
captain; James Burton, the Pumas have more
depth this year. Training for Prior is still
on Tuesday when final team will be selected.

Warriors
Retreat
Westleigh Warriors of Lancashire have
withdrawn from the National Founders Cup.
Problems with the team became apparent when
they had to cancel their fixture against
Lions and a rescue attempt for the club was
unsuccessful. Middlesbrough are now awaiting
a decision from England Basketball as to
whether those points will be awarded to the
club.
The club are looking to schedule a fixture
against Tyne Met Trojans in March.

Holyhead
v Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough Lions travel to Holyhead Celts
today in what will be their first National
Founders Cup game. Lions were due to play
Westleigh Warriors at home 2 weeks ago but
the Lancashire team pulled out and in their
place Lions put in a great performance
against Durham Wildcats which should provide
them with a boost in Wales.
The Wrexham based Celts have a number of
threats, most notably Ben Lewis and Neil
Williams. Lewis was in good scoring form
against Darfield, although the Celts lost
62-48.
Damian Warriner will be a key player for
Lions after a strong display at Eston Sports
Academy. Lions new signings; Chris Lyle and
Ryon Dixon will also travel. Rob Bryson is a
doubt for the game.
Last seasons winners; London Lithuanians got
off to the right start in The London Central
region with a 93-77 win over Met Police
Trident. The result of the week though was
the 104-67 thrashing of Richmond Jaguars by
Kingston Wildcats. James Cook leading
scorers with 29pts.
Middlesbrough’s next home game is on Sunday
16th November against Menwith Hill USA Air
base at Eston Sports Academy. Tip is at 4pm
although arrive before 3.40 for team intros.
Lions U15 team will also feature at 1pm in
the Junior National League game against
North Shields Storm. Tickets are available

Kings of
The Manor
U16 Manor Heat 53-42 Macmillan Magic
U14 Manor Heat 50-33 Macmillan Magic
Manor Heat began the new Tees Schools season
well with wins for their U14 and U16 squads
over Macmillan Magic. Macmillan though put
up a good display and although they were
second best for the majority of the U14
game, Magic's U16 team could have won had it
not been for a great display from Lewis
Fisher who top scored with 33pts. James
Patterson provided good support for Manor
adding 14pts in their 11pt victory. For
Macmillan, a fine performance from Danny
Chirnside adding 24pts and a host of
rebounds provided Magic coach; Rob Bryson
with some positives to take away "We had a
number of good performers and Khan also hot
16pts so there is plenty to build on" added
Coach Bryson. The MVP award went to the
impressive Lewis Fisher.
While it was a tale of superstar displays in
the U16 game, the U14 provided a good spread
of scorers with seven players from each side
marking the score sheet. Umair Ghafoor of
Macmillan was the games top scorer with
17pts but the 10pts of Chris Coussons along
with 8pts from Dylan Fisher, Shane Lynn and
Adam Stoddart secured victory for Manor.
Dylan Fisher of Manor was voted MVP.
