TADEA Lions Boss Hungry For Success
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions chairman and head coach; James Thomson has signalled his intentions for next season and is as eager as ever to build a team capable of achieving success.
This week England Basketball announced the National League
Division 4 line up which will provide at least 15 home games for
the Lions fans to look forward to after Mr Thomson confirmed the
club have entered the National Shield and National Cup.
Mr Thomson said “Last Season was our second year of National League Basketball and I believe it was a significant one. We managed to improve our winning record with 9 wins and 15 losses which could have been even better if not for key injuries and was better than the previous season at 4 wins and 14 losses. We also secured major sponsors in TADEA, Heaven Scent and Tavistock as well as retaining partnerships with Tees Valley Leisure and Ravenwood Roofing.”
Most significantly Mr Thomson described the development of the clubs fan base as the biggest success. “We have a dedicated following of fans that support the team home and away and over the season have grown a real passion for the club.” There is every reason to believe that this fan base will continue to multiply over the coming years and if it follows the current trend, Mr Thomson’s dream of filling the 1,200 capacity Eston Sports Academy may soon become a reality. “We put on a good, entertaining show, not just basketball and this is very appealing for spectators, especially families.” Added Mr Thomson and when asked about the pricing structure, he indicated that the club is keen to remain as low priced as possible to ensure that the majority of people in Teesside can afford a ticket. Last season, tickets were only £4 adults and £3 children.
“As a club, we look good, have a great media profile, extensive presence in the community and attract large crowds to our games. In this sense we have been very successful and this potential has helped us secure some major partners to assist our development. There is little time to sit back and admire however and with all the existing ingredients in place there is a real desire to do well on the court. I must now work hard to attract players of a high calibre that can help us become successful.”
Last season Mr Thomson did this with the signing of Tom Robinson
who went on to establish himself as one of the best players in
the league. The signing of American DaWaun Wells was another
major step as the first foreign professional signed by the club.
Although Wells didn’t always live up to the high expectations,
his signing is further evidence of the direction the club is
heading.
There will be many new faces this season as a number of players
move on. Anthony Humes is leaving to attend university in USA
while John Ford is also leaving to attend university at Keele,
near Stoke. Matt Taylor, victim of a bad broken finger is yet to
announce his decision to keep playing. There is much hard work
and negotiation taking place behind the scenes to sign and
re-sign players but it is the right kind of player that is
crucial.
“The player has to fit into the club and my ethos. It takes a
special type of person to suit the Lions and this is one area
which has helped to entice such devoted fans. The majority of
our players and keen to be involved in community events, junior
coaching, promotional events. They have a willingness to assist
the clubs development.”
This obviously narrows down the field of available players, but
Mr Thomson is adamant that the clubs policy will not change. “We
don’t need to just open our doors to anyone and everyone. We are
looking for players who will improve the team and portray
themselves in a professional manner. I have had interest from
many players both locally and internationally. Some of the local
based players would surprise many. If they are right for the
club, financially viable and good enough then I will make every
effort to bring them to TADEA Middlesbrough Lions.”
Until then, it would appear to be a game of wait and see.

National League Teams Confirmed For Next Season
TADEA
Middlesbrough Lions will face another long season next year as
14 teams were confirmed for Division 4. There are four teams
missing from last season as both Warrington Wolves and
Huddersfield Heat were promoted to Division 3 while Bury Blue
Devils, Durham Wildcats II and Wirral Hornets were all
disbanded. In their place enter Bradford pair; The Maroons and
Dragons II, Chidwell Stars, Mold Magic, Oldham Titans and
Rossendale Raptors to spice things up.
Established sides such as Hull Wasps, Stockport Falcons II and Liverpool will all compete as well as a return for last season newcomers Cheshire Jets II, Newcastle Eagles II and the impressive Burnley College Blaze.
It is a shame that three teams have withdrawn. Bury Blue Devils suffered last season with the departure of coach Chris Walsh and were unable to fulfil some games toward the end of the season. For Durham finances may be a possible reason as the club prepare a bid to enter the BBL while the omission of Wirral came as a shock, especially as a team that seemed to do quite well
As for the new teams, little is known about them and opens an opportunity for topic discussion in the Lions group on Facebook. Do some research and post your findings in the group.
Two former England Legends in Warrington's Delme Herriman and Huddersfields player of season; Jason Swaine will be plying their trade in Division 3 next season but for Lions fans, the news of an extra team is good news, with an extra game to watch at Eston Sports Academy and the league missing two great players will hopefully boost Lions chances of doing well.
Lions boss; James Thomson was pleased with the promotion of the two top teams but remains cautious regarding the new entrants "Last season taught us to be wary, with the emergence of very good teams in Burnley and Cheshire. However we must concentrate on our development and hopefully we can produce a strong enough team to challenge for honours, regardless of the opposition."

These Girls Are Heaven Scent!
These girls are Heaven Scent or so there sponsor; Heaven Scent Yankee Candles in Middlesbrough would suggest. On closer inspection male players from TADEA Middlesbrough Lions basketball team emerge, dressed up as a forfeit during a Fans v Lions event at Eston Sports Academy.
The event was brought about following the clubs Durham League cup final win, after Lions fans flooded social network site, facebook, with hundreds of comments and messages. When fan; Steve Brown suggested a fans v lions game, the site erupted once again.
The event saw 12 fans of all sizes and levels of fitness, some of whom have never played basketball before, suit up in their heroes uniforms. The most high profile fan was Gazette reporter Martin Neal who has some experience, albeit limited, of playing the Lions. Martin played for the celebrity team against the Lions last October and has since become a fan of the club.
Over
£1,500 was raised from fans sponsor sheets, stalls and business
sponsorship from Heaven Scent & Jetline Cutting LTD. Jetline
Cutting LTD pledged £500 to start the ball rolling and £2 per
point for the fans score with Heaven Scent doing the same for
the Lions score. The 83-76 final score generated £318!
Prior to the game, the fans were given the real experience of the professionals as they were introduced to the crowd with the big game routine including lights out, music & sound effects.
Following this, heads turned in anticipation for the introduction of the Lions and a roar of laughter met the arrival of the hairy legged cheerleaders with matching blonde pig tails.
The serious business though was still to be tackled as the fans still held to ransom the TADEA Lions mascot; Sam Dunk. The Lions had to score 25pts in the first quarter to release Sam Dunk and this seemed comparatively easy as the pro’s pounced ahead with a big 26-2 lead within the first 6 minutes. In the seventh minute the game announcer stated that Jetline Cutting was pledging £2 per point for the fans score which led to James Thomson scoring 6 baskets in his own hoop to help boost the fans score and clubs coffers! The event followed the same theme of fun and showmanship and was an entertaining day for the many fans who came to watch.
At half time kids from the crowd got their chance to grace the main court with their own game. Players from the clubs junior sessions have been raising sponsorship themselves to earn a place in the game and they all thoroughly enjoyed their experience whilst boosting the fund by an estimated £400!
By the end of the third quarter the fans were somehow in the lead 69-59 and it became apparent that the fans who were resting kept pooping over to the scorer’s table to add points!
Not wanting to live with the fall out of losing to their own fans, the Lions produced a powerful finish in the final quarter to wrap up the game winners by 17pts. The real score, no one knows but all enjoyed a great day and raised a fantastic amount of money to assist the clubs development for next season.

Kids Game is FANtastic!
Junior
basketball fans were given a real treat when they had the
opportunity to grace the main court during half time at the
recent fans v lions event at Eston Sports Academy. The event was
suggested by fans of the TADEA Middlesbrough Lions basketball
club and in the footsteps of the older fans, the youngsters
raised money via sponsor sheets to play in the game. Club boss
James Thomson said “We wanted to give the juniors an opportunity
to play on the main court during a real game. It is a memorable
experience to play at Eston in front of a crowd and hopefully
these youngsters will treasure their special day.”
James refereed the game whilst in his cheerleader outfit. Not normal refereeing attire but with the fans raiding over £500, the Lions senior players had to play in fancy dress. Fellow player; Tom Robinson who coaches the juniors with James was also on hand giving a running commentary on the microphone.
There were some outstanding displays from the budding Lions with Taylor McFayden running the show for the TADEA Lions A as he scored early in the game to leave the TADEA Lions B trailing for three minutes when Joshua Watts tied the game after a good pass from Amir Ali. There were also some good performances from Adam Brown, Jacob Watts, Daniel Burns and Connor Ali. James Thomson said after the game “All the kids enjoyed the game, we always like to give out an MVP award for the player who performs the best, but this game was really difficult.” In the end the award for MVP was presented to Connor Ali who performed to the crowd with a variety of tricks and skills as well as showing a good work ethic. The day was probably best summed by 7 year old Aaron Seymour who smiled constantly throughout the game!
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions run junior sessions for under 12’s and 13+ with both boys and girls of all abilities welcome. The club will soon be launching a Junior CVL which will provide regular competitive games for the youngsters. Each session is just £3 and the club is looking for more players.
12 & Under Sunday 2-3pm Eston Sports Academy £3
13+ Wednesday 6-7pm Gilbrook College £3

Sam Dunk Kidnapped By Fans
There is no stopping a group of basketball fans who have challenged their professional heroes to a game. The TADEA Middlesbrough Lions supporters have now kidnapped the clubs mascot; Sam Dunk in an attempt to unsettle the pro players ahead of this Easter Sunday event at Eston Sports Academy.
In yet another twist, following the news that enough money had
been raised to force the pro TADEA Lions into playing in fancy
dress; Sam Dunk was collared while visiting the fans training
session last Saturday. There are no fears for Sam’s safety
however as Lions chief James Thomson commented “We are not
concerned for Sam, he is a fans favourite so I imagine he is
somewhere safe being well looked after. This is just a fruitless
attempt to unsettle us ahead of the big game.”
Lions star; Tom Robinson believes the trick may backfire on the
fans “Taking our Sam is like taking one of us and on Sunday we
will avenge this on the court the way we know best. We are just
not sure whether we are going to score 40pts past them or not
let them score in the first quarter!”
When
asked if the fancy dress will affect their playing ability James
Thomson laughed “I don’t know, I am not sure whether a game of
basketball has ever been played in fancy dress but it will
definitely be entertaining.”
The fundraising event was suggested by club fan and
photographer; Steve Brown following the final game of the
season, a thrilling cup final win for the TADEA Lions. Steve
said “After the game facebook was taken over by hundreds of
messages and comments about the Lions and I think everyone was
ecstatic about the win but also disappointed that the season was
over. I suggested we play a fans v lions game but it was tongue
in cheek at first, I never expected it to explode into all this.
We are really looking forward to it and if it goes well
hopefully we can make it a regular event.”
The club are remaining tight lipped on what they will be wearing
but there are a few clues. The fans are all raising sponsorship
and the first target of £500 was met in minutes as Steve pledged
£500 to start the ball rolling from his Jetline Cutting LTD
company. The next target was £2,000 for the Lions to wear drag
and with so many people involved in the fundraising, this now
seems a realistic target.
“Playing in women’s clothes is not something I or the other
guys are looking forward to if I’m honest. Its going to be hard
and embarrassing enough in fancy dress. Hopefully the fans raise
£1,999!” added Coach Thomson. The player coach went on to say
they are planning for both scenarios and if the fans hit the £2k
target that the players will honour their obligation.
Lions
sponsor Heaven Scent Yankee Candles have also pledged £2 for
every point the Lions score while Jet Line Cutting LTD have
pledged the same for the fans score. This though will not help
the £2k target as its after the game and the fans are pleading
for more support. We have spoken with the club and they have
agreed for any company that sponsors them will receive
advertising for next season’s National League campaign. For £360
a company will receive an arena advertising board, website link
and programme advert for the whole season and if agreed this
week, the amount will be added to the fans £2k target.

Easter Sunday Eggstraveganza - TADEA Lions v Fans!
Following their recent Cup Final win, TADEA Middlesbrough Lions could not go two days without someone wanting to knock the club of its pedestal. However they would not expect a challenge to come from their own fans!
The Lions fans have been flooding social network site; Facebook with congratulations messages after the Durham League Cup win on Sunday and when club photographer Steve Brown suggested a fans v lions game, the site erupted once again with hundreds of comments on the subject and a challenge to the professionals.
Not able to back down, the club have now organised the event, which has developed into a fundraiser to aid the clubs development, for Easter Sunday. The fans are all aiming to raise money and seek local business support to match their money raised. Each business will feature in the match programme under the fan they sponsor. If the fans raise over £500 the Lions players have to play in Fancy Dress and if they manage to raise over £1000 they have to wear the costumes on a night out!
Asked why the players would subject themselves not only to the embarrassment of wearing fancy dress among the difficulty of playing in the costumes and the possibility of being beaten by their own fans, Club chief James Thomson’s answer is simple “The fans have been superb all season. When the idea was brought forward I was delighted that even after the season has ended the fans still want more!”
The game will tip off at Eston Sports Academy on Easter Sunday, 24th April at 1.30pm. There will also be a kids game at half time, with the youngsters themselves doing their bit to raise funds.
Spectators are encouraged and tickets for this special event are only £2 per person and provides a great afternoon of family fun entertainment.
After the game the club are planning a social event with bowling and a few drinks for the those old enough. Lions star Tom Robinson said “We have been planning a social get together to end the season and wanted all the people both young and old to join in, so an afternoon of bowling seemed the perfect choice. The family feel of the club is just another thing I love about Lions.”

TADEA Lions Triumph In Durham League Cup Final
TADEA Lions 76-61 Old Houtonians
TADEA Lions capped off their season as Durham League Cup Champions following a thrilling win over Old Houtonians at City Space Sunderland in front of a superb following of fans who made it feel like a home game.
The Lions, in partnership with Darlington College entered the team into the Durham League for the first time this season and things couldn’t have gone much better after lifting the Cup and beating the league winners (Old Houtonians) twice this season, the only team to do defeat them.
“It was a great way to thank the supporters who enjoyed a great day out at this fantastic arena. A few of the Lions players will be leaving now and it was nice to finish in such a positive way. We were back to our best and with Houtonians in such good form, both sets of fans were treat to an incredible game.” Said Lions chief James Thomson.
The game was not plain sailing though and required an incredible comeback in the second half. The Lions began with a spring in their step, taking an early 4pt lead via American DaWaun Wells and big man Rob Wright. Danger man; Lee Norton was left on the bench for the start of the game while fellow 3-point gun Anthony Burdis, who once scored 69pts in a single game was guarded with a cautious eye by TADEA Lions. At the mid point of the first quarter Lions extended their lead to 10pts with two 3’s from Wells. Norton would then signal his entry to the game with a 3 and 6’10 veteran Ian Burlison would bring the Houtonians within 5pts, 21-15 at the end of the quarter.
The game was missing a scoring element, especially from Lions in the second quarter. Player/Coach James Thomson would leave the game in the second minute and not return. Thomson was key in creating many of the fast breaks of the first quarter and this was a distinctive absence in the second as the TADEA Lions struggled to hit 5pts and only one open play basket. Houtonians were better but not by much. Norton managed two lay ups and Alex Curtis would make the biggest contribution with 5pts.
Defence would seem to be the winner so far in this game as Wells led the way with 12pts, but failing to hit the mark in the second period. For Houtonians Norton carried his team with 7pts while Burdis was yet to mark the sheet. At the end of the half Houtonians held a slight lead 26-27.
In the third quarter, Curtis pulled up at the top of the key for a nice jump shot and although Robinson, relatively quiet in the first half, responded, the Lions were forced to call a time out as Dale Burrell instigated an 8-2 run to build a 7pt lead, 30-37. Coach Thomson’s words seemed to inspire an immediate reaction as TADEA Lions entered the court with an air of determination. Robinson and John Ford would combine to produce an 11-3 run. Ford brought the crowd to their feet in the eighth minute as he was fouled on the drive for the And 1 play. Burlison broke the run as the big man benefitted from a scrambled ball to rise above the Lions for the easy lay in, the momentum though was firmly with the Lions and they were spurred on further by their incredible supporters.
Heading into the final quarter, Lions were now 1pt ahead, 45-44 and the atmosphere was akin to a Rocky movie finale. The first blows though were provided by Houtonians as Burdis finally marked the sheet with a big 3 to wind the Lions. Warriner would then enter the fray with two consecutive baskets to regain their 7pt advantage, 45-52 and with five minutes gone, Lions had still not scored, prompting Thomson into another time out.
Thomson instructed his troops to employ their famed Pest, a full court press which can force the opposition into errors or if not run properly allow them an easy basket. Fortunately for the TADEA Lions it was ran well and mistakes crept into the Houtonians game. Lions capitalised on this as Robinson stole the ball and passed long to Ben Thompson who was then fouled on the shot. Thompsons bonus shot would just trickle out but Robinson would again steal the ball in the next play and run the full length to finish with an off balance shot off the backboard. Lions were now just 2pts behind, 51-53.
With four minutes remaining Wells tied the game, while seconds later Burdis would show his clutch with only his second 3-pointer. Lions were not finished though as a barrage of three 3’s inside a minute from Wells & Dixon pushed Lions ahead 62-58. Another 3 from Dixon and a slam dunk from Wells topped a final 14-1 run in the final minute to finish Champions by a 15pt margin.
League Chairman; John Harding presented the awards after the game and was full of praise for the Lions “Both teams have provided a truly fantastic final. I have only seen Lions play once before and I was very impressed then. They have a great work ethic, attitude and spirit and I congratulate the new Durham League Cup Champions” said Mr Harding.
Mr Harding then presented the Game MVP to Tom Robinson who stepped up in the second half to help secure the team’s win.
MVP Robinson was ecstatic after the game “This is the first MVP I have been awarded in a final. I am so happy with Lions. I feel I have developed so much from being at this club and I am really looking forward to next season already. I must say I would not have received the award without the help of my team mates and coach so big up to my boys!”
Top Scorers
TADEA Lions: Robinson 24, Wells 22, Ford 13
Houtonians: Burrell 15, Norton 9, Burdis 7

Lions Beaten by Better Team
Huddersfield Heat 109-81 TADEA Middlesbrough Lions
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions chief; James Thomson gave no excuses, just a simple explanation after losing by 28pts to Huddersfield Heat. "They were the better team and sometimes you just have to accept that. As a team we were happy overall with the contribution we made. We never looked out of place and in the third quarter matched their 30pt haul." said Thomson.
The win secures a play off place for Huddersfield as they round off the season with a 21 win and only 3 loss record for second place in the league. The Champions; Warrington Wolves were also crowned after beating Durham 114-60.
For TADEA Lions, a big game atmosphere was generated thanks to a good crowd and game commentary by British basketball commentary legend; Mike Shaft and Lions were looking good value initially taking an early lead 8-7 thanks to good play from Robinson. Jason Swaine and Joseph Irving responded for Heat but Lions would again re-gain control as Robinson and Ford took Middlesbrough to 12-16.
Irving would instigate a quick assault as he fired in two successive 3's and Chris Bigley would wrap up an 1-0 run with an 'And 1' play. DaWaun Wells a last second shot to bring Lions within 7pts; 18-25.
The second quarter saw good play from both sides with the difference being the perimeter shooting from Huddersfield side who connected with five 3-pointers to extend their lead to 16pts at half time.
Both sides provided a great advert for basketball in the third quarter as Middlesbrough restricted their hosts to just one 3-pointer, made by Swaine in the second minute. Some good passing led to quick baskets for Middlesbrough as James Thomson continued to unleash the early full court passes to find the main benefactor in DaWaun Wells who would hit 11pts in this period. For all their good play though they would be no better off as, impressive as a 30pt quarter was, especially against the Heat, the home side would also hit 30pts, leaving the score at 80-66, heading into the final quarter.
Two early 3's from Swaine would calm any nerves the Huddersfield coach; Eduardo Perez may have had and although Wells replied with a 3 for TADEA Lions, it did little to whether the storm as Kristo Kraus pushed Huddersfield over the 100 mark in the fifth minute. The Middlesbrough defence did well however to limit the Heat for the remainder of the game to just two open play baskets.
The TADEA Lions would enjoy a good show of transitional basketball but their outside shooting would suffer as they hit just three 3's the entire game. Wells and Robinson ran the fast break particularly well finishing with 30 & 28pts respectively. The Heat enjoyed three players hitting big numbers as Swaine, Irving and Bigley made 28, 24 & 21 respectively.
The MVP was awarded to Joseph Irving who was a constant threat with three 3's including two successive shots that instigated the turning point for Huddersfield in the seventh minute of the first quarter. From this point Heat controlled the game and finished winners by 28pts.

6 Man Lions Claw A Big Win At Cheshire Jets!
TADEA
Middlesbrough Lions would travel to Chester to face a stern test
against the Cheshire Jets with just seven travelling players and
only six of these participating with player/coach James
Thomson’s knee injury restricting him to un-needed back up.
Cheshire who boast a number of young players who play for their
professional BBL team have been doing well in the league and
would emerge as a tenacious side with a strong perimeter threat.
The Jets would hit four 3-pointers in the first half but Lions
proved they were a match from the offset as Anthony Humes
scooped a put back and John Ford created a menace of himself
gaining 6pts with a variety of skills on display. DaWaun Wells
struggled initially with his shots failing to connect although a
3-pointer in the final seconds would give Lions an 16-18
advantage heading into the second quarter.
American Wells and season stalwart; Tom Robinson both struggled
offensively in the second period hitting just 4 & 2pts
respectively, however others stepped up with Ford and Ben
Thompson producing spectacular efforts at both ends of the
court. Thompson would hit 6pts and Ford would add 8 to his
growing tally. The dander of Jets striking hard though was never
more evident that when BBL player Ryan Gallagher slammed home an
aggressive dunk in the sixth minute. The beast of a man would
struggle to stay on court though as his overly aggressive
defence put the big man in early foul trouble. Fellow BBL player
Christian Single was another player to be wary of as he powered
his way to the hoop for his 11th point shortly after the dunk.
Coach Thomson called a Time Out and Lions switched defence to their renowned Pest which encouraged the Jets into some turn overs and allowed Lions to pull back a 7pt deficit to just 3pts at the half 37-34.
In
the third quarter TADEA Lions struggled to handle an offensive
barrage from the home side. The Cheshire trio of Gallagher,
Single and Rabah Tahrahoui, used their BBL experience to combine
well for 20pts. Middlesbrough were on the back heel and although
Robinson was beginning to warm up on offence the visitors were
becoming increasingly frustrated at some of the calls. Another
Time Out was called by Coach Thomson who insisted the refs had
been good for the majority of the game and a few no-calls would
not be allowed to let their heads slip. A mix of several key
mistakes from Wells and Thompson combined with some big shots
from Cheshire placed the momentum firmly in favour of the hosts
and at the end of the third quarter Lions were down 10pts,
59-49.Lions now had 10pts to re-claim the game, a feat that is a lot harder than it sounds when considering the opposition must be stopped a Lions would have to build a 10-0 run just to tie the game. Rob Wright would begin with an ‘And 1’ play, as well as converting the bonus shot and Wells followed in with a big 3-pointer. In the second minute Gallagher would make his last basket as this was followed by his fifth personal foul. This provided Middlesbrough with further inspiration and a 10pts from Robinson tied the game with three minutes remaining. Tahraoui fought back for Jets while Ford responded with a sweet drive. With just over a minute left Robinson looked certain to provide Lions with the lead when he stole the ball and ran free. His attempted dunk though rattled out and with one minute to go Lewis Halpin hit two free throws to regain the lead for Cheshire.
A tense period would ensue as Jets Coach John Lavery called his second time out in as many minutes. With fouls to give Coach Thomson used the opportunity to urge his players to step up the intensity on defence, “They must not score, play hard and smart” the Middlesbrough Chief was heard saying.
As the players entered the court Robinson immediately made amends for his missed dunk with a huge block and then scoring a well drive lay up at the other end to tie the game. With another steal, Middlesbrough pushed forward their transitional play and found Ben Thompson who leapt to the basket to claim a 2pt lead with 6 seconds remaining. John Ford then stole the ball and as was then pulled back by Tahraoui sending Ford to the line with 0.5 seconds left. Coach Thomson called back his troops and instructed his players not to risk fouling by standing still. Ford made his first shot but missed his second leaving Cheshire frantically attempting a full court shot which would fail to find the target and beat the clock, earning a jubilant Lions celebrating a great victory.
The MVP was awarded to Ben Thompson (left) who was a major force at both ends of the court. The point guard who is usually content with passing the ball proved his offensive attributes with a high percentage return on his 13pts as well as a host of rebounds.
Coach Thomson found time to single Ben out for praise “I sometimes wish I had five Ben’s. He is the most dedicated and consistent member of the team. I have been encouraging him to use his shot more and today he did this and it was a crucial part of us gaining the win.”

Thomson Duo Passing To Success
Some great passing from Lions duo James Thomson and Ben Thompson led to some great plays by Middlesbrough last week against Newcastle Eagles and the club are keen to see this continue to aid their transitional strengths and hopefully gain a few more wins before the season ends. Middlesbrough face some tough tests in the coming weeks with away games to Burnley, Cheshire & Huddersfield. Both Burnley and Huddersfield are chasing the championship title while Cheshire boast a number of excellent players including a couple from their BBL side.
Middlesbrough though must not dwell on the opposition but focus on their own strengths and when in free flow they are capable of beating any side in the league. Lions star Tom Robinson heaped praise on the Thomson's after the Newcastle game "We have such an unselfish team and James and Ben are the epitome of this. They look up immediately and that is a big benefit to the likes of myself, John and DaWaun."
Lions will be hoping to match the last result of a three game weekend in early February with another three wins this weekend.

New Opposition For Season Finale This Sunday
Good news and bad news this
Sunday for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions, the bad news is that the
planned opposition; Bury Blue Devils have conceded the game
being unable to field a team. The good news is Lions are awarded
the 2pts and there will still be a game for the fans.
The club in a very short space of time have managed to secure
two of the fastest developing teams in the North East in
Darlington Storm and Sunderland to give the fans a double treat.
As a season finale Middlesbrough will now be treating their fans
to two games for the price of one! The first game against
Darlington will now take place at 3.30pm and this will be
followed immediately after by the Sunderland game. TADEA Lions
coach; James Thomson spoke of the clubs frantic search since
being informed late on Wednesday of Bury’s withdrawal. “The
important thing for the club was to bring in a replacement team
to entertain the fans. We wanted to go one better and so we have
brought two!”
Darlington have a good team and are currently unbeaten in their
league so the game should be interesting. Lions Coach Thomson
and his team face a tough weekend ahead with a Durham League Cup
game on Friday night, Burnley away on Saturday and the final
home game at Eston on Sunday “We are expecting a big crowd being
the final game and I am thrilled to say the show will still go
on!”
Darlington were formed by former National League player John
Thompson who started out with the successful Derby Trail
Blazers. He has assembled a strong squad with an international
flavour. 4 players are from Lithuania & point guard Jules
Gaminde is from Philippines. “We are a young club but have
managed to attract some very good players and I am hoping we can
perform well on the big stage at Eston.”
Lions will have the edge in terms of talent & experience at a
high level, although they will be tired after 2 games in the
previous 2 days and hoping that no new injuries will be
incurred. Darlington will be looking to the talented Adam
Pearson & Chris Lyle who can both score high while their may be
a battle of dunks with the athletic Nidijus Skapas aiming to
impress.
David Lunt is another to watch and is a former North England
player with strong passing ability.
This season Darlington have literally taken the league by storm,
are currently unbeaten & TBL D2 Cup Champions but can they
remain undefeated after Sunday?
Sunderland are led by Gary Crowhurst, a shooting guard from
Stevenage who has a good shot from both inside and outside the
perimeter. Gary is also the coach of the team. Who play their
home games at the impressive £12m CitySpace which boasts one of
the first new official courts in the UK and a 500 capacity.
The main threats for Sunderland come in the form of Diego Prado, a 6’5 power forward who has great athleticism and excellent rebounding. Fellow athlete; Marvin Isebor is a player to watch at both ends of the court. Antwan Benjamin from Canada and Clement Delpouve from France bring a cosmopolitan flavour to the side while local boys Luke Musgrave, Vince Elwick & Chris Bland make up the rest of the squad.

Tough Trip Ahead To Burnley
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions face the tough task of challenging the high flying Burnley Blaze at Burnley College this Saturday. The team though will take forward momentum from the previous victory over Newcastle and have the knowledge of a great performance the last time the two sides met.
When Burnley came to Eston before Christmas Lions were in splendid form, leading the game by a comfortable cushion of 10-15pts for the majority of the game. Lions were cruising and looking a safe bet until the mid point of the final quarter when a memorable come back from the visitors snatched a 9pt victory from the Lions claws.
Last time around the Middlesbrough side managed to contain the threat of Andre Taylor although the talented guard has hit 68pts in his last two games, so the Lions will have to neutralise this danger as well as containing the rest of Coach Malcolm Leak's well drilled team.
Lions have no new injury concerns other than Rob Parsons will miss the weekend due to a back injury. The other walking wounded in Wells, Thomson, Robinson and Ford will all play a part. Ford, who played a limited role last week against Newcastle will be hoping for a bigger part against the Blaze and if the key quartet of Robinson, Wells, Ford and Wright can all produce the goods there is every chance the Lions can pull off a great win.
Another player Coach Thomson has reserved praise for has been guard; Ben Thompson who has cemented his place in the team in recent weeks. "Ben has been a consistent and injury free member over the last few months so he has been a crucial piece. He has performed well, controlled the game, delivered good passing and hustled hard on defence and I am very pleased with his progression within the team. I would like to see him shoot a little more as he has a very good shot and I will be encouraging this at the weekend."

Show Time For Lions Against Newcastle
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions 88-57 Newcastle Eagles II

The game started brightly for Lions as four players marked the score sheet, Tom Robinson and Robert Wright playing particularly well. In the sixth minute some good ball movement from Thomson and Wells led to a treat of a dunk as Robinson slammed home with two hands to take the score to 13-4. Chris Rennison-Rae was ploughing a lone burrow for the Eagles as the visitors continued to struggle. Rennison-Rae made a strong bucket in the seventh minute but there were too many misses from the Eagles and Lions’ Wright and Wells were dominating the rebounds.
With three minutes remaining Rob Parsons, nursing a broken nose and young Craig Todd entered the game, both players producing the goods to maintain Lions surge.
The finish to the first period could have been better for Lions had they not missed 4 free throws and a 3-pointer from Vince Bodeaca just before the buzzer instilled some relief for Newcastle, though they were still down 20-9.
In the second quarter Lions American star DaWaun Wells opened with a big 3-pointer and Robinson followed with two strong drives. Newcastle on the counter were now beginning to settle as Dunlop drove to the basket and managed to float in a shot over the stretch of Wright. Sanderson and Rennison-Rae also chipped in with shots to settle the nerves of the visitors. At the mid way point the score was still in favour of the hosts 29-16.
Middlesbrough were producing some great basketball with the Thomson’s; James and Ben feeding the ball to Ford and Robinson who combined for 18pts in this quarter. At the half time buzzer Lions were cruising 47-24 and the home crowd were loving the moment. The diminutive Bodeaca would prove more than a handful in this game, his instructions being to unsettle the Lions and in the first minute he would fire in a 3-pointer. Middlesbrough responded in the best way with Robinson and Thompson producing a 9-2 run. A 3-pointer from Wells and a great Robinson pass to Humes for the nice finish extended the run to 14 and the lead to 31pts, 60-29. The last three minutes though were not good as the Eagles capitalised on some sloppy Lions play to finish with a 12-6 run of their own. Eagles star Crackett was top drawer in this period adding 8pts adding to Eagles best period, finishing 19-17.
The final quarter saw both sides fight, one for pride and the other to impress the home crowd and this resulted in an entertaining final ten minutes as the athletic Wells exploded to connect with a pass from Robinson and an aggressive dunk from the American. Ben Thompson and Rob Wright were playing extremely well during this period although for Lions some attempted highlight plays in the final stretch would backfire as Eagles countered for 9pts. Lions were not happy at the attempts to stop Wells from dunking by grabbing him and pulling him down but overall were very happy to round off an exciting display and a big 31pt win, 88-57.
Lions had a number of good players including Ben Thompson and James Thomson who controlled the game well and delivered some excellent passing. Rob Wright also produced the goods with 14pts and 16 rebounds and while DaWaun Wells was quiet on the scoring front his 12 rebounds and 2 blocked shots deserved a pat on the back. The MVP though was awarded to Tom Robinson who hit 30pts, 8 rebounds & 7 assists.

Warrington Back on Top After Beating Huddersfield
Its all tight at the top after Warrington Wolves (left) beat previous leaders Huddersfield Heat 75-99 in Yorkshire to move into pole position. A good start from Heat inspired by Jason Swaine took the first quarter 21-19 but that would be their last lead of the game as the Wolves forged ahead by as many as 27pts in the third quarter. Chris Bigley was limited due to the tenacious defence while Arden and Herriman led the scorers for the visitors with 20 & 18 respectively.
The Wolves points difference is a massive 511 with the next best being Hull on 254 and is indicative of the free scoring basketball endorsed by Warrington.
Burnley are the team to keep an eye on though, currently sitting in third place on the same number of losses as those above but with three games in hand. Burnley enjoyed two wins last weekend with an 81-72 victory over Hull Wasps followed by a 30pt win, 82-50, over Newcastle Eagles. Andre Taylor was the MVP of the weekend hitting 25pts against Hull and a massive 41pts against Eagles.
Stockport Falcons lost 64-74 to Hull Wasps but then beat Cheshire Jets 73-62 to cement their fourth place.

Best All Star Weekend Yet!
The 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend has come and gone, so now we have time to reflect on the last three to four days in Los Angeles. Staples Center was the host, and its tenants took home the major hardware of the weekend, with Blake Griffin of the Clippers winning the Slam Dunk Contest and Kobe Bryant of the Lakers taking home his record-tying fourth All-Star Game MVP trophy. All in all, the weekend was a great showcase for L.A. basketball.
All-Star weekend began with the unveiling of a statue of the great Jerry West, the Hall of Fame player for the Lakers who later became the team's general manager who was integral in the forming of two dynastic teams. West is already the logo for the NBA, so it's only fitting that he have a statue in front of Staples Center, too. Fellow Laker statue subject Magic Johnson went so far as to say of West, "Here’s a guy whose statue should have been out there before mine."
Friday in Los Angeles involved mostly around more Carmelo Anthony trade rumors, but the night culminated in the Rookie Challenge, the first of Griffin's three events on the weekend. Griffin did not disappoint, scoring 14 points, on seven crowd-pleasing slam dunks
However, Griffin saved his best for Saturday night. The dunk contest had an amazing first round, including JaVale McGee dunking on two baskets at the same time, L.A. native DeMar DeRozan throwing down a vicious reverse dunk, and Serge Ibaka dunking from the free throw line (from further back than Dr. J, Michael Jordan, or even the immortal Brent Barry). However, the image of the night was Griffin getting a pass through the sunroof of a KIA from teammate Baron Davis, then jumping over a car! It might not have even been Griffin's best dunk of the night, but it was enough to get the home crowd on their feet and give Griffin the slam dunk crown.
The three days of All-Star festivities ended with Sunday's All-Star Game. Kobe came out of the gate firing early, guiding the west to a halftime lead with 21 first-half points. Kobe had 32 points with 18 minutes left in the game, and Wilt Chamberlain's scoring record of 42 points seemed within reach. Meanwhile, LeBron James had a spectacular game as well, especially in the fourth quarter, and ended up finishing with the second triple-double in All-Star history. Like most All-Star Games, no matter how big the lead, the final few minutes always seem to be close, and Sunday was no exception. The East cut the West lead to two points, but Kobe, Kevin Durant, and Pau Gasol came through late to drive home the victory for the West.
Kobe's 37 points and 14 rebounds brought him another All-Star MVP award although LeBron James was hot on his heels, being only the second player in history to mark up a triple double during the event.

Local Derby Game Cancelled Due To Injuries
Due to the major injury problems at TADEA Lions, the club have had to postpone the big game which was due to take place this Saturday at Teesside University. Middlesbrough have only four fit players and cannot even produce a starting five let alone any substitutes.
There is no confirmation of alternative dates yet but an announcement will be made soon.

Lions Plunge To Defeat!
The TADEA Middlesbrough Lions suffered a horrible defeat at the hands of Wirral Hornets, who despite their reputation as a physical team, showed a class about them that was head and shoulders above Lions injury ridden side. With so many key players on the sideline Middlesbrough were in need of a big performance and sadly it would not appear.
The game started fairly evenly, a 1pt lead in favour of the Hornets at the end of the first quarter. Good ball movement and sharp shooting aiding the visitors. By half time though their lead had extended to 14pts and then 22 in the third quarter. At the final buzzer Lions found themselves 32pts down, a heavy defeat by any standards and the Lions players were visibly frustrated throughout and completely deflated at the end.
So what went wrong, many were asking and obviously the injury situation is a factor but the players on court were just not on par. The game seemed too much for James Thomson who produced too many turn over's and DaWaun Wells would struggle to live up to expectations with some poor shooting. Ryon Dixon, who had hit fifteen 3's in two local league games couldn't manage a single one and the second best scorer on the Middlesbrough side was Ben Thompson with just 8pts. In a game where at least three double figure scorers are required to win games, to have only one is not good enough.
What was developing into a good finish to the season took a severe blow against Wirral and the Hornets will not maintain 8th place, 2 pts ahead of TADEA Lions.
"It's a massive shame, that was the kind of display you wish was away from home so your own fans don't have to witness." added Coach Thomson. "We were riding high from the previous few wins but this was a big blow and i think everyone could see how badly the game had effected us."
The Lions must now re-group for the local derby game on Saturday although the club will be hoping for some good news on the injury front. player/coach Thomson has said there is no way he can play after battling through recent games. Dixon has also signalled he will be unavailable and at present the paper thin squad has only four players available.

TADEA Lions v Wirral Hornets
This Sunday Eston Sports Academy, 4m Tip
£4 Adults & £3 children
Its going to be a tough old battle this Sunday with both teams wrestling for 8th place. The Hornets are one of the most physical teams in the league, by now though Lions must be aware and make plans to overcome the aggressive side of their opponents. After being narrowly beaten on Cheshire soil, The Lions will be wanting to revenge the 7pt loss in October with an impressive performance to continue their recent good form.
That though will be easier said than done taking into account the clubs incredible injury situation. Tom Robinson is definitely ruled out along with Matt Taylor and Leo Cassidy. James Thomson is having to play through his injury and it is hoped that long term absentee Rob Parsons will return after appendicitis. It is also hoped that American star; DaWaun Wells will be fit for Sunday although he will face a late fitness test ahead of the game.
On a positive note, Rob Wright is back to his best after illness, Ryon Dixon has recovered from his back problem and gave an MVP performance in the Durham County Cup Semi Final and power forward; Anthony Humes is now looking good following his early season broken foot. The in form John Ford will be key in this fixture and if he can produce the goods as he has been in recent games, Lions will hopefully prove they have enough in their arsenal to overcome the loss of key players.
For Hornets the players to look out for are Chris Whitehead, a point guard who leads the team at both ends of the court. His temperament often gets the better of him and he is no stranger to technical fouls. Whitehead, son of Coach Anthony, can drive as well as shoot and is a difficult player to mark. He is also a good passer and one benefactor of his passing is Matt Barden, a 6'3 guard who can also play inside. Barden also can shoot and drive. In addition there is depth and power in the squad.
With only three home games remaining in this campaign, don't miss the action in what promises to be a tough and entertaining battle.
Spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm.

Lions Through To Durham County Final
A vastly under strength Darlington College Lions pulled off another impressive result in the semi final of the Durham League County Cup last night at Wellfield School in Wingate. The 58-81 result over East Durham means Lions have reached the County Cup Final in their first season of Durham League basketball. The team was developed in partnership with TADEA Middlesbrough Lions and Darlington College and is a blend of senior players along with students from the College Basketball team of which Lions player Ryon Dixon is coach. The development of this team was viewed as crucial to promote the college basketball programme in the wider area as well as encourage the development of existing players studying at the Houghton rd campus.
Due to severe injury problems, Lions had only 5 players, meaning no subs and the early signs were concerning as East Durham took an 18-11 lead in the first quarter. Simmons was the man of the moment as he hit the last 8pts to secure the lead. Too many easy misses disrupted Lions game plan although a couple of 3's from Ryon Dixon closed the gap.
By half time, Lions had reversed the lead helped by some good passes from James Thomson and four 3's from Dixon. Second year student; Craig Todd battled hard at both ends of the court and made a great play in the ninth minute with a rebound and put back. At the interval Lions were ahead 32-37.
The injured Thomson proved a telling factor in the third quarter as Lions extended their lead. Thomson led with 8pts in this period while another 3 from Dixon and some good defence from Ben Thompson helped produce a 6-16 period to take a 38-53 lead.
A good amount of points would fall for both sides in the final quarter although the advantage would stay with Lions as they outscored East Durham 19-28 despite finishing the game with just four players as Todd fouled out in the third minute. Lions switched to a box defence and managed to contain the threats of John Anderson and David Wylie for the most part, although Anderson produced a strong finish with 10pts late on. For Lions another College student in John Ford produced a good finish as he drove well for 13pts. A further 8pts from Ben Thompson rounded off a good 23pt victory, 58-81.
Ryon Dixon was awarded the MVP for holding Lions together in the early stages with some big 3-pointers.

Warrington Put Burnley On 2 Losses as Heat Keep 1st Place

Alan Duppa was the leading scorer with 25pts, the big man controlling the offense down low from start to finish. Coach Leak’s Blaze started well with a 21-17 first quarter although they struggled in the second period going down 2pts at half time 39-37. The lead would grow to 7pts by the end of the third quarter and a 6pt win would be wrapped up by Coach Herriman’s Wolves. Maclane James did well in reply for Burnley adding 19pts.
Warrington now sit just 2pts behind the league leaders; Huddersfield who notched up two more wins beating Bury 83-59 and an 84-85 win at TV Mohawks. Chris Biggley (left) was the man of the weekend for Heat with a game high 28pts at Mohawks.
Stockport Falcons moved into third place with their 11th win of the season being a 34pt thrashing of Newcastle Eagles II. The Falcons depth continues to impress and with the majority of players hitting double figure points it was an all round enjoyable game for Coach Andy White. The top scorer were Harrison and Kuczaj on 14pts apiece. For Eagles Sanderson hit back with 14 also.
Durham’s win over TADEA Lions propelled them into 6th place. Lions missed out on the opportunity to go 9th and close the gap between Durham, Cheshire and Wirral.

Pioneers Top College League
Stockton Riverside Pioneers are top of the Tees College League with a 2 win and 0 loss record. Queen Elizabeth and Stokesley Tigers however are hot on their toes with one win each and no losses. In second place with 1 win and 2 losses are the Prior Pursglove Pumas, though they will need to work hard to scratch up some more wins to ensure they maintain their current position.
Sean Rees is the current leading scorer with 31pts for Stockton Spartans. Rees hit an impressive 20pts in their loss against Chris Lyle's Queen Elizabeth. QE are looking to repeat their championship winning campaign of two seasons ago although strong competition from Darlington College and Stockton Pioneers may provide some resistance.

TADEA Lions Bury The Blues After Warrington Woe
Bury Blue Devils 82-85 TADEA Middlesbrough Lions
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions rounded off a tough weekend away with a loss at Warrington followed by a dramatic win at Bury, a game which had both coaches, benches and spectators on the edge of their seats.
After looking the stronger team in the first half and leading by 8pts, mistakes would creep in towards the end to reduce the visitors lead to just 1pt, 32-33 at the interval. Lions then struggled on the restart and watched helplessly as the Blue Devils went 10pts ahead. Towards the end of the quarter Lions stepped up, with John Ford in particular playing some excellent basketball at both ends. Steven Graham though was the thorn in Lions side as he added 11pts in the third quarter. Middlesbrough were given some hope with the emergence of Ryon Dixon’s three 3-pointers to tighten the game. Lions were down 59-55 thanks to a Graham 3-pointer on the buzzer and would enter the final quarter with a lot of work to do.
Coach Thomson demanded an immediate response and was not afraid to tinker with his squad. “We need to stop the scoring, it doesn’t matter how many we score if we keep allowing them easy baskets” added the Middlesbrough Coach. Although this impact would not happen immediately, the new squad rotation policy would pay dividends late in the game. Bury would in fact gather a 10pt lead as silly mistakes yet again disrupted the TADEA Lions. As Lions switched to a man to man defence and locked down the key scoring threats an unlikely hero would emerge in Will Guery who had hit just one shot prior to the fourth quarter and now hit 8pts, leading to his marker; Tom Robinson being replaced with Ben Thompson.
The introduction of Thompson would be a turning point for Middlesbrough as with just three minutes remaining and down 10pts, the hard working guard would produce an ‘And 1’ play and make his bonus shot to reduce the lead to 7pts. In the next play, John Ford Weaved to the basket to reduce the lead to just 5pts. Bury then replied through Matt Allerston but the momentum was with Middlesbrough and Ford was again on hand to draw another ‘And 1’ play. Ford would miss the free throw but the Lions were now well and truly fired up. A big rebound from Rob Wright found DaWaun Wells but the American would miss his next two drives. Coach Thomson called a Time Out to rest his ailing players. Pure adrenaline was keeping them going but the Coach begged for them to leave noting on the court and if they need to be carried off after to secure the win then so be it. With 16 seconds remaining Lions were down by just 2pts when a silly error from Allerston would send Wells to the free throw line to make both shots and tie the game. Another Time Out was called by the Lions chief who reiterated the importance of staying on your marker and ensuring NO fouls be given. No silly mistakes could happen at this stage. Disaster would emerge when Metcalfe lost Wells and drove to the basket. Lions forward; Matt Taylor would attempt to play help defence but stumbled, fouling the Bury player as the ball dropped into the basket. With 9 seconds remaining, this free throw could put the win out of reach for Lions, but he missed and Wright pulled down the biggest rebound of his career. As he held the ball, Bury made their biggest mistake in fouling. A foul which would send the athletic forward to the line to make two successful shots to re-tie the game.
A final Time Out was called by James Thomson who brought back Tom Robinson and called for the ball to be placed in his hands for the last shot. The drama however was not over as Bury captain Steve Graham drove with determination and rose to sink a close range shot to win the game. Out of nowhere though American DaWaun Wells would make amends for a terrible game the day before by blocking the shot and sealing the ball. Graham’s frustration would earn another foul sending Lions to the line again. With 0.6 seconds left Wells made his first and Robinson sealed the win with a buzzer beating put back after Wells missed his second. In the most dramatic of games, TADEA Lions would beat a solid team that has already beaten Hull and Chester Jets this season.
After the game, Lions Chief James Thomson praised his squad for what was an important reaction to the Warrington loss “We showed superb character to hold our nerve and fight through fatigue to secure a vital and morale boosting win. I was very disappointed with the way DaWaun and Tom played against Warrington, though they made amends for that against Bury. I expect a lot more from them. I am very pleased with Ryon Dixon, Ben Thompson & Rob Wright against Bury and John Ford who I made captain against Bury after being the only player to perform against Warrington.”
The MVP was awarded to Tom Robinson who despite some mistakes and fatigue was the games top scorer on 23pts.

Lions Leave Warrington With Tails Between Their Legs!Warrington Wolves 82-54 TADEA Middlesbrough Lions
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions Coach; James Thomson was not happy after seeing his side slump to a heavy defeat at Warrington Wolves. The game represented an ideal opportunity for some retribution after the Cheshire based team inflicted the heaviest defeat in Lions history; a 58pt loss at the start of the season. Coach Thomson was quick to point out that preparations in the first game were severely disrupted and Lions could have and should have played better. To have the opportunity to prove this and then throw it away brought a temper filled display from the normally reserved coach.
TADEA Lions began well, trading baskets with the Wolves via Rob Wright and Matt Taylor. Taylor would actually carry the Lions in the first quarter with 8pts. After two minutes, the Lions collapsed under the Wolves press with American guard DaWaun Wells beginning what would be a terrible game for a player of his calibre. Wells was being attracted like a magnet into the half court trap instead of passing out of trouble. Team mate Robinson was guilty of numerous early errors and was replaced after 5mins with John Ford entering the game. A Time Out was called by Lions to assess and counter the press, but the Lions continued to commit elementary errors and this was costing the side dearly. Very soon Warrington amassed a 10pt cushion with captain; Delme Herriman & Alan Duppa leading the Wolves with 7 & 6pts respectively. At the end of the first period, Lions were behind 29-19 and but for the impact of Taylor could have been a lot worse.
Duppa continued to be a menace in the second quarter adding 8pts to his tally but more concerning than Middlesbrough’s ability to contain Duppa was their inability to score, achieving only 8pts in the second quarter. Ironically two Lions dunks would emerge from this period though there was little for the team to celebrate as at the end of the half, the scoreboard read 46-27.
Being down by 19pts would not have seemed so bad if it had not been for the amount of turnovers the Lions continued to produce and if it wasn’t being caught in the trap it was poor passing. Lions would commit in excess of 30 turnovers and half of these were from Wells, which is uncharacteristic of the American. These turnovers led to quick and easy baskets for the home side with Herriman, Duppa and Slater struggling to believe their luck as they pillaged Middlesbrough on their way to a 25-12 period score.
In the final quarter Coach Thomson berated his under-performing players. To play badly is one thing but to play so badly with repeat errors is another and a new substitution policy of ‘one mistake and your off’ was adopted. This would appear to have the desired effect as all players were on their toes and although it was too little too late, the Lions managed to outscore the Wolves 11-15 in this period. This was in part due to the excellent defence Lions were displaying via their own press and the inner knowledge that a mistake would lead to their substitution. It was a relief to see Lions finally showing their potential. An 8pt haul from young John Ford including two ‘And 1’ plays inspired some hope, not for a win, but at least to salvage some respect. Robert Wright finished the game off with two shots to reduce the lead to 28 rather than the 40pt peak in the third period.
A 28pt loss was a lot better than the previous encounter between the two sides, yet Coach Thomson would not accept that as a positive. “We came into this game looking for a win, especially after the display against Huddersfield. I was really disappointed with the contribution of DaWaun and Tom, they are our leaders and they failed to deliver in this game. I am hoping this will spur them on to finish the season strong.”
Young John Ford though did make a positive impression “John was an inspiration, not only to me but I am hoping to his team mates. He played less than half the game and despite being the youngest led the team in scoring.”

Wolves: Duppa 23, Griffiths 18, Herriman 12

Lions Looking To Shake Up League
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions are looking ahead to a difficult weekend which could shake the league up if the Lions have their way. The Middlesbrough squad have a double header at the tough Warrington Wolves on Saturday and then at Bury Blue Devils on Sunday with a 4pt haul at the top of coach James Thomson’s New Years wish list.
A win over Warrington would inflict a fourth defeat on the former league leaders, blowing the race for second place wild open and victory over the Blue Devils would further strengthen TADEA Lions charge.
Prior to the Christmas break, Lions were in good form with a strong win over local rivals Tees Valley Mohawks, a 20-0 victory awarded to the club due to Cheshire forfeiting and then a superb display despite losing to current league leaders; Huddersfield. Against Huddersfield Lions amassed their highest score of the season at 98pts with superb displays from Tom Robinson and American star DaWaun Wells who hit a season high 44pts including an incredible ten 3-pointers.
Defence though was an issue, allowing the Heat to score 119pts and this must be put right at Warrington. The TADEA Lions though will be keen to settle the score with the Wolves after Delme Herrimans side inflicted Lions worse ever defeat at Eston in the opening league game of the season. A 56-114 thrashing flattered the visitors as Lions failed to perform in all areas. Now though with the addition of Chicago native; DaWaun Wells and a resurgent aura to the side, the Teessiders will enter the game with confidence and a point to prove.
Warrington are by no means invincible and it could be said that a large factor in the previous loss was Lions poor play, not to take anything away from the Warrington side, but Middlesbrough were just not involved in the game and it would have been a surprisingly easy game for former England legend Herrimans side. This may serve to help Middlesbrough, if the Wolves enter the game with a low guard.
The continuation of good scoring form from Robinson and Wells is imperative but other players must also produce and none more so than 6’6” forward Robert Wright who in Coach Thomson’s opinion is key to victory. “We missed Wright’s influence against Heat. He just had a bad game and that affected us because he is such an important player. In other games he has been a crucial factor in our good play so it is vital he produces the goods at the weekend.”
The stats would agree with Coach Thomson with Wright averaging a double-double every game this season. The athletic 20 year old has impressed in his first National League season yet during the Heat game he would suffer a poor game despite still scoring 12pts and collecting 11 rebounds.

Tigers Pounce on Pumas
Stokesley Tigers 30-15 Prior Pumas
Stokesley produced opened their college season with a win in what was described as a scrappy game in the East Cleveland battle. The game took place at Prior Pursglove college but home advantage would not help the Pumas who were finding it difficult to connect with the basket. Fergus Roddy was the difference in the game and he connected the dots for Tigers to start the season in the best possible way.

Robinson Back in Training
TADEA Lions star; Tom Robinson has returned to training after struggling to play over the last 4-6 weeks with ankle tendonitis. It may have been a blessing in disguise that the last two games have been postponed due to bad weather and have allowed the 6'4 guard additional recovery time. When interviewed recently, Robinson found it hard to contain his excitement. "I am just so happy to be moving around without the pain. The physio's at Teesside University have been great and I am really looking forward to progressing my training back to maximum."
It is anticipated that Robinson will feature against Scarborough this Sunday but Coach Thomson was quick to point caution was the word of the week "We need to monitor his reaction to training and then assess whether it is best for him to play or not. We have a couple of local league games that we can also test the water with. What we don't want is another set back."

Lions Move Up In League Without Playing!
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions moved up a place in the National league Division Four League in what was an unusual occurrence of events. The Lions were due to play Cheshire Jets at Eston Sports Academy this Sunday, but had contacted England Basketball to say they were struggling to produce a team due to some of their players representing their BBL team. The BBL is the professional basketball league.
A club spokesman for Cheshire stated the club could only send 6 players and were initially asking to re-arrange the game, though this was met with some opposition from the Middlesbrough camp. Club chief; James Thomson added “We were not keen on re-arranging the fixture as a lot of promotion has gone into this game. Everyone who has a leaflet will see this fixture and due to our games being such high profile events, a lot of organisation is involved. It would be very difficult to find another available date that would suit Eston, ourselves and Cheshire.”
The Middlesbrough Coach went on to say “We sympathise with the Cheshire predicament but we have to do what is best for our club. We have lost games this season because we have been under strength due to injuries, sometimes playing with just 6 players, yet we still fulfilled the fixtures, even to the detriment of ourselves. We did say that if they could organise with another team to witch commitments that we would be willing to accommodate, however most important thing for us was to ensure an event on the promoted date so that our fans can enjoy the game they have been looking forward to.”
However this did not materialise and the Jets’ Andy Green conceded the game this week which handed the TADEA Lions an important 2pts without playing a game and moved the club up a place to ninth position, just 2pts behind the Jets.
The Lions were a little disappointed at the news, as they were looking forward to an important game this Sunday, yet all the players and club officials were delighted at the 2pts bonus. Ben Thompson, point guard for the TADEA Lions said “I suppose after so much bad luck at the start of the season, especially with injuries its nice to have a little bit of good fortune.”
The club have now lined up what will be a competitive friendly test against Scarborough Seahawks in place of Cheshire. The game will tip of at 4pm at Eston Sports Academy. Spectators are asked to be seated for 3.30pm and tickets are only £4 adults & £3 children.
“Scarborough will be a tough test. They are a strong and well drilled team with a mix of experience and youth. We have never played them before but we are aware they have a couple of good Latvians in their ranks so it will be interesting to see how this one go’s.” said Coach Thomson.
The clubs junior basketball session will be back on this Saturday after the snow disruption. Junior sessions for 12 & Under take place at Eston Sports academy from 11-12 every Saturday. 16 & Under sessions take place every Wednesday at Gilbrook College from 6-7pm. Each session costs £3.

Bury Trip Cancelled This Saturday
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions game against Bury Blue Devils this Saturday has been postponed due to bad weather.
A decision was made between both club officials today at 11.30am to postpone after the poor weather, particularly in the North East is showing no signs of improvement.
John Allerston of Bury Blue Devils has indicated that the weather is poor but not dramatic in Greater Manchester but his concern is that weather warnings are in place until next week and more snow is forecast. From TADEA Lions perspective, they have been unable to train this week and the poor weather in the North East would make driving conditions unsafe.
Ultimately, heeding the advice of the Police, both clubs have conceded the only option to safeguard the safety of players and spectators travelling to the game would be to postpone.
Middlesbrough will now begin to focus on the Cheshire Jets visit to Eston Sports Academy on Sunday 12th December. Spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm and tickets are only £3 children and £4 adults. Tickets are now available at Heaven Scent, near Pysche on Linthorpe Rd Middlesbrough. A Free family ticket is available with purchases over £20.

Lions Frozen Out!
The basketball world in National League Division 4 brought some good news for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions this week, despite their own game at Newcastle Eagles being postponed due to the snowfall.
TADEA Lions were actually due to set off for the fixture when they received a call to say the home team were struggling with the severe weather conditions and due to safety concerns would have to cancel.
Middlesbrough were keen to play the game, especially after a good win the previous week over local rivals; Tees Valley Mohawks. Newcastle are currently bottom of the league and Lions star Tom Robinson was keen to see Lions build a winning run. “It was disappointing to have the game cancelled as we were all prepared to play. We were actually setting off when the call came.” Added the 6’4 guard.
On a positive note, two of the top performing teams were handed unexpected defeats with Hull beaten away to Bury Blue Devils and current league leaders Warrington Wolves faltering at Stockport Falcons. Middlesbrough’s American guard; DaWaun Wells was beaming at the latest news stating “I came here to help this club become a success, so to have 6 losses so early is very disappointing for all of us. The news that the top teams have lost a couple games now gives us an incentive to make sure we don’t slip up and hopefully if more results go our way we can put some pressure on them.”
This Saturday TADEA Lions are due to travel to Bury and will face an uncertain team at the Castle Leisure Centre. “The league is so strong this season, I would say that ten of the teams are capable of beating each other. This has been proven last weekend with some surprising results. Bury like ourselves have not had the start they would have liked, although their league position is more flattering than ours.” Said Lions chief; James Thomson.
Last season Bury were one of the league contenders yet this season has seen an unsteady start with a 4 win and 4 loss record. They are currently sitting in 7th place on 8pts while the Lions are in 10th place with 4pts. Middlesbrough are approaching this game as a critical one with the intention of closing the gap between the two teams.
This though will be subject to the weather as reports of more snow may force TADEA Lions into their second straight postponement.

Middlesbrough Lions Welcome Their Juninho
Interview by Martin Neal, Evening Gazette
AMERICAN ace DaWaun Wells has already made a big impression on the court after signing for Middlesbrough Lions - now he’s aiming do the same away from the basketball arena. The 27-year-old Californian’s arrival earlier this month was described as being “like Juninho signing for Boro” and he’s quickly shown fans what he is capable of.
He settled in to his new surroundings swiftly and was the top scorer in last Sunday’s 96-85 National League Division Four win over derby rivals Tees Valley Mohawks II with a massive 36-point haul.
But for Wells it’s not just about playing well - it’s about introducing new fans to the sport and increasing its profile on Teesside.
There are, after all two clubs in the area playing at National League level - the TADEA Lions and the Mohawks - and Wells reckons it’s about time the unconverted find out what they are missing.
For example, there was an electric atmosphere generated by a lively and passionate crowd for last Sunday’s clash at Eston Sports Academy - but the 1,200-seat venue was no more than a quarter full.
“One of my goals is to try and help develop basketball in England,” explained Wells, who has already started work on putting together a programme of community sessions and will be visiting schools in the area.
“It’s never ever going to be as big as football because that’s like a religion here, but basketball can be big."
“A lot of people probably don’t even know there’s a basketball team in Middlesbrough, but it has the potential to be big. If you have kids, they’ll love it. It’s an exciting game and with the half-time show and music, it’s a fun afternoon too. It’s a great atmosphere. Hopefully we can get the seats on both sides of the court packed - that would be a good thing. Maybe we could even get connected with the football club too.”
If the talented combo guard shows the same commitment as he does on the court, then there’s no doubt his mission can be a success. He’s only been in the UK for three weeks but he’s happy to be living in Middlesbrough and enjoying being in his new base.
“I’m settling in well, Middlesbrough is a good town - despite the rain,” he quipped. “Everybody has been very welcoming and have been taking care of me. I’m glad that I’m here.” He joined a side that has been struggling for results in the early stages of the season but he sees better times ahead, though he warns that there must be no slacking from the team.
“Winning the league is going to be hard now but hopefully we can win the rest of our games and finish up in the middle of the table,” he said. “It’s unrealistic for Hull or Warrington (the top two in the table) to lose five more games although you never know what can happen - it’s still early in the season.”
The Lions have been hit hard by injuries this season but Wells believes the only way is up now.
“If everybody gets together, works hard and practises, we’ll be OK,” he insisted. “That’s going to be the biggest thing, just to keep on practising.
“James Thomson (club owner, player and coach) is doing a great job with the guys - all we need is more commitment from everybody else and we’ll be OK.”

TADEA Lions Claim Mohawks Scalp!
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions claimed local bragging rights after a thrilling 96-85 win over local rivals; Tees Valley Mohawks at Eston Sports Academy. A good crowd of over 140 turned out to see the local derby game and they were in for a treat. TADEA Lions American star; DaWaun Wells was top dog with 36pts in front of a delighted Lions crowd.
The home and away fans were giving their all from the stands as the visitors gathered an early lead through Lee Woolams and Mark Finmore. DaWaun Wells replied for Lions with a strong rise to claim an And 1 play, this after three big blocks in the first few minutes. The free throw was missed though and Farrell, Colmer and Nicholls combined to produce a 9-0 run which forced Coach Thomson into a Time Out. On the return TADEA Lions gathered some momentum as Wells and Ryon Dixon hit a 3-pointer a piece to spur Lions into life. Mohawks Finmore connected for a 3 in response but two big plays from Matt Taylor. Mohawks though were staying strong and took advantage of two weak fouls by Lions which allowed Woolams and Colmer to capitalise with And 1 plays, both also adding the bonus shots and extending their lead to 11pts, 13-24.
Middlesbrough would not crumble despite the poor lapses and instead produced an 8-0 run to finish the first quarter down 21-24 but looking the happier side.
In the second quarter Lions brought the game to the visitors as the Middlesbrough side outscored the visitors 24-14. Tom Robinson, playing through injury was in splendid form as he contributed 9pts, seemingly able to score at will as he shredded the Mohawks defence. Dan Farrell was making an impact early in the quarter with 5pts including a And 1 play but Lions defence was proving too tight as they smothered the visitors every move. Young Marshall Patterson was able to break free on two occasions as the big man pulled off two nice shots late on for the Mohawks. At the end of the half Lions left the court worthy leaders 45-38.The Middlesbrough lead was reduced slightly in the third period but they held on to their lead throughout despite a good early start from Colmer adding 5pts in the first minute to split the deficit. Lions depth was called upon yet again as Robert Wright looked more than handy in the low post, adding 6pts, one basket coming from a huge rebound. The Lions were looking the more likely to win and were producing some great basketball.
In the final quarter Mohawks took the lead for the first time since the second quarter after Patterson and Colmer combined. Robert Wright was on hand to tie the game with a powerful play down low, but this was matched by Woolams at the other end and both teams began trading the lead. In the third minute Wells produced a spectacular dunk and the American star followed this with a big 3-pointer off the glass. To follow this dunk, moments later Tom Robinson produced a two handed slam to lift the Middlesbrough camp and force the visitors into a Time Out. In the seventh minute Wells received a good pass from Thomson and finished a smooth reverse lay up. Thomson then drew three fouls to claim 4pts at the line. The Mohawks were left chasing the game late on and as time was running out had to foul the Lions. Finmore gave his best in the final minutes, adding 6pts but TADEA Lions finished the game strong and well worth their 11pt victory.Lions fan; Kevin Smith from Hartlepool said after the game “That was a great game, Lions just keep getting better every time I see them.” Another Middlesbrough fan; Andrew Geelan from Middlesbrough said “That was the best game I have seen. Our family really enjoy supporting the team and I cant wait for the next one.”
The MVP for the game was TADEA Lions American star; DaWaun Wells who stamped a big mark on the league in this game, top scoring with 36pts and four big blocks. The guards athletic dunk was the icing on the cake in what was a fine performance. The only area in need of improvement was 3-point shooting which was just 3 of 11. DaWaun added after the game “I felt good today, but more importantly as a team we looked really good. I want to see us win again and again, our fans deserve it, they were great today.”
Tom Robinson and Robert Wright were also in superb form, both players combining for a whopping 39pts. Robinson was a close second for MVP as he collected 10 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 assists & 3 blocks. Wright led all rebounders with 16 including 7 on the offensive end.
Top scorers
TADEA Lions: Wells 36, Robinson 22, Wright 17, Taylor 12
Mohawks: Colmer 24, Finmore 23, Woolams 13
Lions chief; James Thomson signalled the team playing for each other is their key ingredient “Every player both on court and on the bench wanted what was best for the team and with everyone working together and for each other.”
In big news from around the league, current leaders; Warrington Wolves were beaten 79-80 with former England star Jason Swaine pipping fellow England legend Delme Herriman to inflict their first defeat of the season. Burnley Blaze then beat Hull Wasps 88-73.

The BIG Local Derby
TADEA Lions v TV Mohawks, This Sunday 4pm Eston Sports Academy
Adults £4 Children £3
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions are looking ahead to this weekend with a determined mind as they prepare to host the big local derby with Tees Valley Mohawks. Both teams are sitting on just one win this season and although the campaign is fairly young, there is an air of disappointment in Lions chief James Thomson. “We were silently confident of a good season this year but injuries have depleted our squad to the extent we have had half a team available and even that has included injured players fighting through the pain barrier.” The Middlesbrough coach was quick to point out that even what was left of the team was talented enough to be doing better and the last few games, with the exception of the Wirral debacle would evidence this. TADEA Lions were excellent against Durham and Burnley and the players appear to be in good spirits despite the poor start with 17 year old guard John Ford saying “The recent games against Durham and Burnley are the reasons I am so proud to be called a Lion. We haven’t reached our full potential yet. When we do, we will be a treat to watch.”John and his team mates are hoping that turning point will be this Sunday and there would be no better way than gaining the edge over their local rivals. The game tips off at 4pm with spectators asked to be seated by 3.30 for the game introductions.
While the Lions seem in good spirits, it would appear to be the opposite in the Mohawks camp. Star player; Andrew NYeko has left the club and it would appear his boots have been difficult to fill, although Tyrone Thomas did pluck a season high 37pts against Hull Wasps two weeks ago. It is rumoured that Thomas will not be playing on Sunday meaning the weight will be placed firmly on the shoulders of the likes of Mark Finmore and Lee Woolams. The absence of a dedicated coach has also upset some the Mohawks rhythm.
Middlesbrough have also had their share of bad news and the latest release from the club is Cumbrian star Tom Robinson may miss 6-8 weeks with tendonitis in the right ankle. The recent addition of American DaWaun Wells however has not only boosted numbers but also confidence and the team will be looking for a big performance from the athletic guard. John Ford will return to the squad after missing the Wirral game while James Thomson (knee) and Matt Taylor (ribs) are preparing to fight through their injuries. Player of the season so far, Robert Wright is keen to show a strong performance adding “Coach Thomson has asked me to be stronger and more aggressive around the basket and I have been working on this. I know we can win on Sunday, we just need to all give that little bit extra.”
There is a large crowd expected to see what should be an exciting and explosive game of basketball. Don’t miss your chance to see some of the best players in the area as well as all the half time competitions including Kids Kit Dash and £100 Half Court Shot. For more details call 01642 814221.

See DaWaun on His Debut This Sunday
TADEA Lions v Burnley This Sunday 3.30pm at Eston
TADEA Lions host Burnley Blaze this Sunday at Eston Sports Academy and will be aiming to halt the impressive start by Blaze, who recently upset Huddersfield Heat. The Blaze are led by Andre Taylor and Ithiel Bilson-Graham. Their only loss this season was last week when the high flying Warrington Wolves beat them by 27pts. Their reaction to this loss will be closely watched around the league, although Lions are looking to themselves now, rather than the opposition. With the addition of new American; DaWaun Wells and injured players returning, there is now the talent and ability to do very well
What will also seem like a new signing will be the anticipated return from injury of Tom Robinson. Robinson was a major signing from Carlisle in the summer but has been suffering from a strained ankle for a few weeks. The club are hoping not to use the player too much and ease him back into first team action rather than further aggravate the injury. Coach Thomson is also hoping to unveil one more signing on Sunday, although he was keeping tight lipped on the new addition.
The game tips off at Eston this Sunday 4pm. Fans are asked to be seated by 3.30pm. Tickets are just £3 children and £4 adults. Programmes are on sale for just £1 and include a special poster of the new signing!
Before Sundays game, there is the small issue of Liverpool on Saturday. TADEA Lions travel to Merseyside in search of their first win in the league and will be looking for a big performance to carry forward into Sunday. This could prove to be the turning point for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions and a buzz is generating around the club and town.

TADEA Middlesbrough Lions Are Pleased To Announce New Signing
TADEA Lions bid a warm welcome to their latest and most significant signing in DaWaun Wells, a 27 year old American from Chicago, Illinois. Wells is a 6'3 combo guard, although he is best at shooting guard where he averaged 24ppg last season for NEWI Nets in Division Two.
The capture of Wells signature represents a major coup for Lions chief James Thomson and he believes this is further indication of the clubs ambition. “We were silently predicting a good season this year and our injury problems have been a major disruption. Now with the addition of DaWaun, I am predicting us to be one of the teams to beat. I hope we can repay the fans who watch week in and week out with some attractive basketball and many big wins. With the addition of DaWaun, this will surely be the case.” added Coach Thomson.
DaWaun flew in from Chicago on Wednesday nigh and arrived in Newcastle at 11am this morning. He had an opportunity to meet some players at a local league game and was impressed by the potential of his new team mates.
DaWaun has been keeping in shape over the summer with NBA D League side Fort Wayne Mad Ants, playing alongside NBA fringe players and just to be on the same court as players trying to impress NBA scouts is a suggestion of the standard DaWaun is at. The new star though does not see coming to Middlesbrough in Division 4 as a step down, stating “I have been in contact with Coach Thomson at Middlesbrough Lions for a couple of months now and am so pleased to finally be here in England and with the Lions. Although I have dropped down two divisions, I don’t see this as a negative, in fact I really wanted to come to Middlesbrough, they are one of the most professional clubs in the UK and I cant wait to help them develop into a major force in British Basketball.”
DaWaun continued “I have been following the progress of the team so far and having signed a few weeks ago, it was very frustrating knowing that my new team mates were struggling with injury problems. It seemed that they were always missing just one player. I have kept in constant dialogue with Coach Thomson and I am looking forward to meeting my team mates and beginning training. I just hope that my registration is cleared in time for the weekend. It would be nice to bring two wins and I am really excited about playing at Eston Sports Academy in front of the home fans.”
The club will now be hoping to enjoy a successful season with 17 games remaining. The ultimate aim is to secure a top two finish and secure a place in the play-offs.
James Thomson finished by adding “DaWaun now provides us with one of the final pieces in our team’s jigsaw. We have always been careful with who we bring to the club, they have to be the right person and right character along with being good enough and DaWaun has all these credentials. In addition to our existing players, I am very excited about our potential. DaWaun will be the icing on the cake and I believe that every player will benefit from his involvement.”

TADEA Lions On Verge Of Biggest Ever Signing?
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions may be on the biggest signing in the clubs history. Recent games have not gone to plan and the injury plagued squad would benefit from the boost of a super star addition which would propel the team from mid table hopefuls to top four contenders. The team had just four fit players last Sunday and had to include long term injury James Thomson and recently injured Rob Parsons into the squad. Tom Robinson who has been playing through injury in recent games did not even feature against Durham.
The league has also strengthened from last season with all teams improving their squads. TADEA Lions forward; Rob Parsons added "We have strengthened this season but so have other teams. there doesn't appear to be an easy game this year."
Hull have made a huge signing in John Brignell, Warrington have basketball legend Delme Herriman to rely on and last seasons champions Huddersfield have the incredible Jason Swaine. If Lions are able to add a player to match or better this calibre then the Middlesbrough fans will hopefully have something to be proud of.
The club are remaining tight lipped regarding the identity of the player but said they are hoping he will be available for this weekend's double header. "We have been working tirelessly on securing this player and I believe he will be worth the wait. We are hoping to have him fly into the UK Thursday and begin preparing for the weekend. He has been keeping fit over the Summer and has been training with an NBA 'D' League team which is an indication of his standard." added Club Chief James Thomson.
Fans will have the first opportunity to see the new star in action this Sunday at home to Burnley Blaze. The game tips off at 4pm at Eston Sports Academy. Spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm. Tickets are on sale at only £4 adults and £3 children or a family ticket for just £12. Call 01642 814221 for more details.

Celebrity Basketball Game Aims To Raise Cash for Zoe's Place Sunday 24th
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions take a break from their National League season this Sunday when they host a special Celebrity Basketball game in aid of Zoe’s Place. The club are hoping to raise a large amount of money to help the children’s charity which does so much for the local community. TADEA Lions owner; James Thomson recognises a lot of similarities in the two organisations “We are both small but dedicated organisations aiming to have a big impact in the local community and we are happy to have Zoe’s Place as our benefactor this year. We know the money will be going to a good cause.”
Ali Brownlee will be leading the celebrity team for his second year after doing so in 2008. Ali has assembled an All Star team to include BBC Radio presenter Lisa McCormick and former Boro and Ireland Goalkeeper Jim Platt. The team also includes former World Champion Speedway racer Gary Havelock who is a star rider for the Redcar Bears. Havvy as he is known up and down the UK is also a Sky TV presenter and was one of the better performers in the 2008 event.
Ali Brownlee is a local legend, most famous for being the voice of the Boro. Over the last two years, Ali has developed his
own radio sports show on BBC Radio Tees and among football has promoted other local sports including TADEA Middlesbrough Lions basketball. Ali is also a patron of Zoe’s Place and is hoping for an even bigger turnout than the 450 people that enjoyed the last celebrity game in 2008.
Another female player is Geraldine Williams, an International Netball player and head of Grangetown Netball Club. Her son and current Boro star Luke Williams will also be present at the big day.
This Sunday will play host to three events in a feast of basketball fun at Eston Sports Academy. You can get involved in one or all ways:
|
11am-1pm 'Brilliant Basketball Family Fun' event - FREE of charge 2pm Celebrity Game 4pm TADEA Lions v Cumbria All Stars |
More celebrity names will be confirmed soon.
For more details please call 01642 814221 for more details or visit www.game-time.co.uk for downloadable leaflet. The club are urging a big turnout for what should be a great, funny and entertaining afternoon for the whole family.

Lions Dip Again in Transfer Market
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions have added another player to their squad in Ben Thompson, from Portsmouth. Thompson has been training with the club for a few weeks and has impressed the coaching staff, who have rewarded the skilful guard with a contract. Thompson has proved a hit with team mates and coach; James Thomson with Tom Robinson saying "I really like Ben, he is a tidy player and a nice guy. I am looking forward to playing with him." Coach Thomson added "The Stockport game was an indication of what can happen when you have a few injuries. We travelled with just 8 players and 4 were injured. Ben has a good handle, good vision, good defence and a good shot. I would like to see the good developed into great and I think throughout the season this will be the case.
Fans will have an opportunity to see Ben play his first game for TADEA Lions on Sunday at the Celebrity & Cumbria games.

Taylor Heads Long List of Injured Lions On Recovery Trail
Matt Taylor, forward for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions is among five injured players making a slow but steady recovery. A weekend off has allowed the club to pace the treatment to ensure the best possible recovery. Ryan Gillham, the clubs sports therapist said "The weekend off has allowed more rest and light training rather than risking further injury attempting to play. competitive games"
Taylor, who suffered a badly twisted ankle three weeks ago and missed the recent Warrington and Stockport losses, is on course to feature at Hull a week on Saturday and has resumed light training. Other injured players have been Anthony Humes (broken foot), John Ford (hip), James Thomson (ankle, knee), Tom Robinson (ankle) and long term absentee Andrew Marshall (back). It is hoped that most if not all will be available to play some part in the game at Hull.

Cracking Turn-Out At Junior Session
TADEA Lions junior community sessions enjoyed a great turn-out today as 27 youngsters between the ages of 5 & 12 showed off their skills at Eston Sports Academy. The session is open to all abilities, both boys and girls. Coaches James Thomson & Tom Robinson were not only impressed with the attendance but also the standard. During the games, three groups were produced with the middle aged section leading the way. Thomas Harvey and newcomer Daniel were a cut above the rest today and earned the Most Valuable Player awards. Jake Simpson was also in good form for the older group.
If anyone would like to attend this session, contact the club on 01642 814221 or turn up at Eston Sports Academy a little before 11am.
For players aged between 12 & 16 there is a session at Gilbrook College on Wednesdays 6-7pm.

TADEA Lions Prepare To Bounce Back At Stockport
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions are aiming to find their feet in Greater Manchester this Sunday when they face Stockport Falcons in the National League. The Falcons Anthony Kuczaj led his team with 19pts against Durham Wildcats last week, though it wasn't enough to seal victory. James Griffiths and Kelvin Cole will also be players to watch, however Lions main concern is how they play themselves after a torrid game last Sunday against Warrington. Injuries have blighted the squad this week with Matt Taylor still on the sidelines with a twisted ankle. Adding to Coach Thomson's headache are John Ford (hip), Andrew Marshall (back) who will not travel. James Thomson (strained leg), Tom Robinson (strained ankle) and Rob Wright (strained back) will travel but will not be 100%.
Coach Thomson indicated this game may provide an opportunity for Anthony Humes to realise his potential. "Anth has struggled with fitness and form since his broken foot and it has been difficult to find him minutes while his confidence is low. Stockport may provide an ideal way for him to stamp his mark, especially with a few players missing. It is vital that he makes the most of this."
The team are hoping that a win will salvage some respect after their heaviest defeat last week and current top scorer; Tom Robinson indicated the significance of the win "We face a tough trip to Hull after this game and they are playing extremely well so its so important for us to pick up 2pts at Stockport."

TADEA Lions v Warrington Wolves, 3.30pm Sunday
Warrington bring with them Delme Herriman, a seasoned veteran who has played in USA & Europe as well as gaining 77 England caps. Delme has also just released his autobiography.
Lions though are looking to themselves and a good display rather than worrying about the opposition and with new signing Robert Wright set to make his debut along with fellow new player Tom Robinson looking forward to his first league game for the club, the Lions Den has an air of optimism this season.
Big Dean Hanson
and Wright
combined for 27
rebounds against
Durham last week
and with the
pending return
of 6'10" Andrew
Marshall the
Lions have
height in
abundance.
Key to the game
will be Tom
Robinson, who
last week almost
earned a
triple-double in
his first
competitive game
for
Middlesbrough.
Robinson marked
the sheet with
22pts, 9
rebounds & 9
assists to
complete a good
introduction to
National League
Basketball.
Robinson said
after the game
"I am obviously
pleased with my
performance and
to be honest
there were a
number of good
displays by
Lions players
but I am gutted
we didn't win
the game. I want
to make sure we
put that right
on Sunday."

TADEA Lions
Collapse Late In
Fourth To Hand
Victory To
Durham
Durham Wildcats
79-77 TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions
TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions completed
their first
competitive game
of the season,
missing out on a
big win at
Durham Wildcats
when a scrambled
shot from Adam
Henderson in the
last second beat
the buzzer to
provide a 2pt
victory to the
home team. The
game brought
both the best
and worst from
TADEA Lions as
they went as
much as 9pts
down in the
first half to
12pts ahead with
just five
minutes
remaining. A
string of four
significant
errors by the
Lions ultimately
cost them the
game but despite
the dramatic
loss, the entire
team were
optimistic ahead
of the new
season.
TADEA Lions star
man; Tom
Robinson stated
after the game
“We deserved to
win today and we
had it well
within our
grasp. Too many
turnovers cost
us the game but
we have shown
that we will be
a major force
this season.”
Robinson’s
claims were
backed up in the
stats as
Middlesbrough
recorded a
massive 25
turnovers to
just 7 from
Durham. These
errors
overshadowed
what was at
times a great
display of
basketball from
the Teessider’s.
In every other
category
Middlesbrough
dominated
including
rebounds 52 to
32, assists 20
to 12 and blocks
4 to 1. TADEA
Lions unveiled a
new signing in
6’6” forward;
Robert Wright
and the athletic
big man proved
his value to the
team with an all
round good
performance.
The game began
with Richy
Summerbell
scoring 4pts,
either side of a
Dean Hanson lay
up, for the
Wildcats.
Robinson then
provided Lions
with the lead,
although in the
fifth minute the
home side
embarked on a
13-0 run to go
19-08 in front.
Adam Henderson
was controlling
the game well
for Durham
during this
period. With one
minute left
Robinson saved
Lions blushes
with another two
baskets to halt
the run and Rob
Parsons
converted an
athletic lay up
to bring the
visitors within
5pts, 19-14.
The
second quarter
was a slow start
with Warriner
missing two free
throws but then
firing a big
3-pointer.
Durham Big man;
James Anderson
powered through
the key for 2pts
but it was TADEA
Lions who gained
momentum through
John Ford and in
particular Matt
Taylor who
produced two
nice moves, the
second earning a
trip to the foul
line to convert
both free
throws. In the
sixth minute;
Middlesbrough
took the lead
through a free
throw from
Warriner. The
free throw
conversion rate
was not good
with 3 of 8 in
the last four
minutes. In the
ninth minute
with the 24sec
clock running
down, Warriner
hit a big
3-pointer to
provide a
further boost to
the Lions
charge. Another
charge from
Wildcat’s
Chambers took
the gloss of
Middlesbrough’s
good play and
the game would
finish tied
31-31 at the
half time
buzzer.
TADEA Lions
quickly
developed a 5pt
lead in the
third quarter
via Warriner,
Wright & Parsons
although Durham
were reluctant
to stay down as
Luke Watson hit
a 3-pointer and
when Chambers
slammed home a
few minutes
later they were
44-41 ahead. The
Wildcats were
now in foul
trouble and
TADEA Lions new
star Wright drew
to big fouls to
claim 4 free
throws, although
the big man made
only 2 of 4. The
momentum though
was again with
Middlesbrough
and in the last
minute they
charged ahead
with 9pts
including a big
3 from Ryon
Dixon to build a
5pt lead at the
end of the third
period, 47-52.
In the fourth
quarter Dixon
hit another 3
and John Ford
charged to the
basket, drawing
a foul for the
successful “And
1” play,
catapulting
Lions 47-58 into
the lead. The
game was on a
knife edge and
Durham came to
within 5pts
through Chambers
& Summerbell,
but Lions
replied in
convincing
fashion through
Wright who had
just missed four
shots. Dixon &
Warriner then
pushed Lions
12pts in front
but some major
personal errors
were in store
for TADEA Lions
and their
inability to
hold a
comfortable lead
would lead to an
edge of the seat
climax to a
great and
entertaining
game. Robinson
would miss a lay
up, Warriner
gave away the
ball and
committed a foul
which led to an
‘And 1’ for
Summerbell and
Dixon would
commit a silly
foul
to lose
possession. In
any other game a
maximum of one
significant
error could be
forgiven, but to
have had four
effectively
handed a
lifeline to
Durham. Despite
giving away a
12pt lead and
almost handing
the game to
Wildcats,
somehow
Middlesbrough
were still in
the game and
with just second
remaining could
have led the
game into
overtime but a
scrambled shot
from Henderson
dashed those
hopes and
brought delight
to the home
team.
TADEA Lions
coach; James
Thomson
struggled to
digest the game
adding “We
showed flashes
of brilliance
mixed in with
school boy
errors and man
for man we were
better and
deserving of the
win. Its not
easy to accept
that WE lost the
game as opposed
to Durham
winning. 25
turn-over’s and
four major
errors in last
two minutes is
unacceptable.
The only
positive; and
it’s a major
one, is that we
looked superb at
times. I am very
optimistic for
the rest of our
season.”
"I also want to
pay tribute to
players such as
Anthony Humes &
Rob Parsons who
had limited time
in this game,
due to others
playing well,
but were very
much part of the
game from the
side."
The TADEA Lions
also had more
star performers
with Tom
Robinson
claiming 22pts,
9 rebounds & 9
assists, almost
a triple-double.
Big man Dean
Hanson collected
15 rebounds & 4
blocks while new
man Robert
Wright enjoyed a
double-double on
his debut with
14pts & 11
rebounds
although hats
must be tipped
for Durham’s Sam
Chambers marking
the sheet with
32pts, 9
rebounds & 5
steals to edge
Robinson for the
MVP award.

Around The League
The TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions pre-season
is in full swing
already with 5
games and 3 wins
under they're
belt already,
but what else is
happening around
the league. So
far most teams
have been
keeping a low
profile and
there are only a
handful of
fixtures to
report on.
Behind the
Lions, the next
most active team
in the build up
to the regular
season have been
the hull wasps
who have played
2 and won 1.
The Wasps
started they're
campaign against
new entrants in
the league this
year, the
Warrington
Wolves. The
Wolves were
formed last
season when the
then Division 2
side Glyndwr
Nets formed a
partnership with
the famous rugby
league side. The
Wolves, who are
lead by ex
England
International
and commonwealth
bronze medallist
Delme Herriman,
look to be one
of the
favourites to
take the league
this year and
got off to a
good start by
beating the
wasps in a close
contest. A hard
fought battle
all game came
down a single
shot by Adrian
Blatherwick to
win the game for
the Wolves.
Unfortunately,
he missed, but
was fouled on
the shot and
went to the line
to convert 3
free throws and
win the game 66
- 68.
The Wasps second
fixture was
against the
Doncaster League
Pawprint
All-Stars and
this proved to
be a more
manageable
fixture for the
Wasps, as they
ran out close
winners 74 - 72.
Prior to these
two fixtures the
Wasps had a few
roster
announcements to
make. The Wasps
polish
connection with
two of their key
players Michal
Kucmierczyk and
Kamil Pilarsk
has ended as the
pair part ways
with the club.
This is a big
blow for the
Wasps and they
will find it
hard to replace
the energy and
presence the
pair brought to
the court. They
have however
found a
replacement for
centre Michal
and a new
assistant coach
in 6"9' Chris
McKenna.

TADEA Lions
Nervous Ahead of
Durham Trip
This season though, TADEA Lions are looking strong and whether they are able to defeat the Wildctas will remain to be seen, the very least Coach James Thomson expects is a vastly improved performance. “Last season Durham were definitely our bogey side, we were unable to develop any rhythm and like true Wildcats, they pounced on every mistake we made. This season will hopefully deliver a better story from our perspective. I know the team is eager to prove themselves and there is a positive vibe around the club.”
When asked how the team was coming together and if any new faces were expected, the response was cautiously optimistic. “We have added to our squad this year, both with young, hungry talent and experience. The addition of Matt Taylor and Tom Robinson will bring further scoring options but yes, we are looking at add.” Apparently the search for players is a luxury rather than necessity with Coach Thomson stating he is happy with the current players but the addition of new sponsor; TADEA has opened a few doors. “We have a good solid squad and any player we bring in would have to significantly improve the team. TADEA have been a god send and through their support we may be able to add 1 or 2 players of a calibre that will improve our existing players and hopefully deliver success. This though will depend on finding the right player and the existing players, bar any injuries already have the ingredients to deliver, so there is no real pressure on me.”
It would certainly appear that exciting times are on the horizon for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions. You can see the TADEA Lions plus the big Lion mascot at Eston sports Academy this Saturday for an open day between 10am-2pm and also at Captain Cook Square, Middlesbrough the following Saturday from 12.30. There will be opportunities to win prizes and have your photo taken with the players and the mascot.
Middlesbrough are next in action at Eston Sports Academy on Sunday 3rd October for their first league game against Warrington Wolves, 4pm. Tickets are available at only £3 child, £4 adult & £12 family. Please be seated by 3.30pm

New Lion Mascot is Huge Hit!
The
new TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions mascot was
a huge hit as
the larger than
life cuddly Lion
made a big
impact on the
players and more
importantly the
young fans in
the crowd. The
Lion was
introduced after
the Lions
players and came
with three
youngsters
hanging off
paws, tail and
anything else
that could be
grabbed. After
high fives with
the players and
opposition it
was the on to
gee up the
crowd. At half
time the mascot
made another
appearance to
support
youngsters in
the kit dash.

TADEA Middlesbrough Lions are looking for help in naming their new mascot. Popular choices so far are:

TADEA Lions Overcome Harrogate Late Raid
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions 89-77 Harrogate Raiders
The
TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions wrapped up
a good pre
season with a
good win over
Harrogate
Raiders at Eston
Sports Academy. The game saw the introduction of Tom Robinson as a genuine Lions player after signing his contract and he would mark the sheet with a good drive followed by 1 of 2 free throws after being fouled. The Raiders though hit back strong as player/coach Ian McAra clocked his first points with Polish guard Pawel Gachewicz hot on his heels. TADEA Lions’ Lithuanian forward; Justinas Lasevicius then hit a 3-pointer to get the game going. A two minute run from Raiders produced 7 unanswered points with Gachewicz pulling the strings for the Raiders while big men Radojcic and Gardner produced the goods under the basket.
The introduction of Ralph Bucci for TADEA Lions had an immediate impact with Middlesbrough regaining the lead on the back of his 10 straight points. Damian Warriner was then introduced and after a poor game by his standards the previous week, showed a determined approach with instant pressure on the Raiders forcing them into errors. Gardner and Gachewicz kept Raiders in the game with some good play though a strong finish from Bucci would result in an And 1 play to earn a 4pt lead at the end of the first quarter, 21-17.
TADEA Lions produced their best defence in the second quarter and Warriner was at the heart of this with the speedy guard at his tenacious best. Bucci also collected three steals in the period and it helped to restrict the Raiders to just 13pts with a particularly strong Middlesbrough finish a highlight. Warriner was in scoring form with 8pts to instigate a 10-0 run. John Ford was also on form with 5pts in the quarter and Tom Robinson was running the floor well as he turned provider, dishing out 4 assists in this period alone. TADEA Lions would finish the half up by 15pts, 45-30.
The third quarter was a stern test for Middlesbrough as the Raiders produced an all round team performance to take the quarter. Great play from Wells, Gardner and young Chris Powell stretched the TADEA Lions and earned the visitors a 6pt win for the quarter, although they were still down 62-53. For TADEA Lions, poor free throws would cost them the period as they hit just 2 of 10 attempts.
In
the fourth
quarter Dixon,
Bucci & Warriner
were proving a
great trio as
they combined
for 25pts which
was all the
quarter points
bar two free
throws from
Thomson. The
efforts of the
trio were
essential to
counter the solo
charge of
Gachewicz who
seemed to plough
a lone furrow in
this period as
the fiery guard
hit 14 straight
points in the
first five
minutes. It
would seem his
only fault was
his temperament
as he made very
few friends with
either the
opposition or
referees. His
constant
bemoaning of
calls was a
shame as it took
the shine of
what was a great
individual
display.A rare lay up from shooter; Ryon Dixon in the dying seconds would have been a nice way to round off a good win, however the impressive Adam Gardner, captain of the Raiders reduced the deficit to 12 with a big 3-pointer to beat the buzzer.
The MVP was awarded to Damian Warriner who impressed throughout, missing just one lay up and contributing 23pts. The top scorer was Bucci on 30pts while for Raiders Gachewicz and Gardner led the charge well with 28 & 15pts respectively.
TADEA Lions now enjoy a break before travelling to Durham Wildcats in the National Shield on the 26th September. The next home game is on Sunday 3rd October against Warrington Wolves

Major New Signing Further Strengthens TADEA Lions
TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions have
pulled off a
major coup in
the transfer
market with the
addition of 23
year old Tom
Robinson from
Carlisle
Panthers. The 6’4” guard who can also play forward played against the TADEA Lions just three games ago and after seeing Robinson’s potential, Middlesbrough Coach James Thomson was keen to sign the Panthers star. “It was important for us to be respectful to Carlisle so we made contact with the club and coach Peter Longworth gave us permission to speak with Tom.” Since then the athletic and hard working scorer has arrived on Teesside to try out for the club and played against American side Menwith Hill Cavaliers. After impressing in both training and the game, Robinson was offered a contract which he was happy to sign.
Robinson will now move to Middlesbrough instead of Manchester where there was also interest in services. “We had to move fairly quick as Tom’s original plans were heading toward Manchester.” Robinson himself is pleased with the new challenge and is looking forward to a successful season with Middlesbrough. “I am really excited about joining TADEA Middlesbrough Lions, as soon as Coach Thomson contacted me there was only one place I wanted to be. I love the style of basketball the Lions play and we have a really good team, so I’m hoping we can bring some success to the fans here.” Said an excited Robinson “It was important for me to have the support of my friends and family and everyone was as excited about the move as me. The Lions game day experience is better than any I have seen around the country and it was a proud day for me when I was introduced against the Americans.”
TADEA Lions coach; James Thomson predicts a bright future for Robinson “I believe that Tom has the potential to be one of the top performers in the league this season. He is a strong and determined guard who is very athletic. I am sure he will become a crowd favourite and provide 1 or 2 dunks during the season.” Added Coach Thomson.
Robinson is from a big family with 14 brother and sisters, enough siblings for a basketball team. He grew up in Preston and was a top performer throughout his school and college years, reaching the Semi Final of the National British Colleges Tournament and collecting numerous MVP awards on his way. Two seasons ago Robinson made his first big move to Cumbria and the Workington Wasps. Here he led the team in scoring and assists as the Wasps went unbeaten and was awarded the player of the year award. The previous season the Wasps had only won 3 games.
Following this success, Robinson was snapped up by Carlisle Panthers where he again received rave reviews including a 22pt, 8 rebounds & 5 assists haul against TADEA Lions.
The next opportunity to see Tom Robinson in action for TADEA Lions will be Sunday 3rd October at Eston Sports Academy when they take on Warrington Wolves in their first league game of the new season.

Let TADEA Lions Entertain You This Saturday!
“Its not just a basketball game” is Club Chief James Thomson’s motto and he doesn’t seem to tire of repeating it, although judging by the photos of TADEA Middlesbrough Lions last game at Eston Sports Academy, we can see what he means.
On top of watching top quality basketball in one of the best basketball venues in the country there is something for the whole family to enjoy with a ‘Kids Kit Dash’ and adults ‘£100 Half Court Shot’ to involve the spectators.
Last Sunday the TADEA Lions entertained American side Menwith Hill Cavaliers in front of well over 400 people as part of the clubs charity PRE Season is FREE Season promotion.
At half time two luck youngsters, Jessica Clarke, 4 and Matthew Beevis, 8 where drawn to enter the kids kit dash which involves them running from one end of the court to put on one of the TADEA Lions uniforms and with 7’1 players, keeping the items on is tricky work! Once dressed, the first to score is the winner. On this occasion and despite a good effort from Jessica, Matthew hit his third attempt to take the prize.
Next was the half court shot with Simon Cassidy being plucked from the draw. With the tension and pressure growing in front of the big crowd and £100 at stake, Mr Cassidy took his time and then some to ensure he got off the right shot. With match referee, Steve Lynas, checking he didn’t cross the line, Mr Cassidy was just short of the basket, although a big smile showed he had enjoyed his chance.
As the day was raising money for the ICU at James Cook Hospital, two of Lions stars; Leo Cassidy and Lithuanian Justinas Lasevicius had one minute to run into the crowd with donations buckets to see who could collect the most. Both players gave their all and raised over £80 between them with Leo edging the way just so slightly.
This Saturday will be the final opportunity to come and watch and maybes take part in the event as TADE Lions play Harrogate Raiders to Eston. The game begins at 2pm and spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm. Programmes are available for £1 but the game is FREE Entry. Donations to the charity are encouraged on the day. For more information or ticket collection points call 01642 814221.

Taylor Inspires In Front of Good Crowd
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions 87-69 Menwith Hill Cavaliers
A delayed start due to the large crowd attending TADEA Middlesbrough Lions at Eston Sports Academy against American side; Menwith Hill Cavaliers was a welcome problem for the club as over 400 turned up to cheer on the Lions.
The TADEA Lions welcomed two new players into their ranks with the addition of Tom Robinson & Cameron Sweeney who are on trial with the club after impressing in a game against Carlisle and the team also had the services of American star Ralph Bucci at their disposal for his third game.
Robinson earned a staring spot after impressing in training and began well with a strong drive to give Lions the early lead. Some great passing from Middlesbrough found Matt Taylor under the basket and to top it off Ryon Dixon fired in a 3-pointer to provide a good early lead. It was short lived though as Eric Knech inspired a 5-0 run for the visitors with Javier Rodriguez tying the game with a nice low post shot.
In the sixth minute Dixon fired another 3 and this sparked a good 9-2 run with Bucci, Lasevicius & Taylor doing damage. TADEA Lions young Leo Cassidy was proving a handful at both ends of the court and in the ninth minute he scored after receiving a great pass from Bucci. At the end of the first quarter Lions should have been further in front but for some good play by Steven Ellis who found two team mates open to close the gap to 5pts, 20-15.
The second quarter was a good scoring period for Lions as they outscored the Americans 26-18, although it was the TADEA Lions second five that turned up the heat with Bucci impressing. Lions could have had even more but for silly fumbles and slack rebounding. Ellis, with 4 assists already, was proving tricky with his speedy feet and sharp passing as he pulled the strings for the visitors.
In the sixth minute Middlesbrough produced a 15-4 run with Bucci, Thomson and Parsons combining well to provide the TADEA side with its biggest lead 39-26. Only the powerful driving of American Myron Mitchell would disperse the Lions tally. Again though a lapse in concentration allowed second chances for the Americans and if they miss their first, they are unlikely to miss the second. Chancellor Thompson revived his side’s morale with a sweet little shot from just above the foul line. With less than 30 seconds til half time, the lead was down to 9pts, but thanks to a nice hook shot from big Dean Hanson and a jump shot from Bucci Lions entered half time 13pts clear, 46-33.
Whatever Coach Charlotte Thompson told her Cavaliers during half time seemed to have instilled a determined approach from her team. Strong driving from Knech and Mitchell got them both to the line but Kneck hit just one shot while Mitchell missed both. TADEA Lions would also witness some errors with Damian Warriner uncharacteristically giving the ball away three consecutive times to lead to his temporary withdrawal. His replacement in Cassidy made an immediate impact with two drives earning him two trips to the foul line. Unfortunately he would makes just 1of4 but compensated for this with a strong drive straight after, ensuring the points rather than the free throws! Another player blowing hot and cold was big Lion Dean Hanson who was countering nice shots, big rebounds & bigger blocks with fumbles. The TADEA Lions centre will be disappointed with some of his mistakes; however his comeback from injury is heading in the right way.
Cameron Sweeney, who was struggling with tonsillitis, was next on the score sheet as he powered through the defence to take Lions to 65-36, a massive 19pts ahead. The Americans though were not ready to concede and Brook Wyckoff fired in a big 3-pointer which was complimented by good work from Rodriguez. For Middlesbrough Sweeney continued to do well with a reverse lay up and 10f2 free throws to wrap up the third quarter, 60-45.
Matt Taylor was proving a key player for TADEA Lions with good boxing out and rebounding on defence leading to quick outlets and good transition play. Taylor was doing exactly what was required, regardless of how menial the task and this instigated some of Lions best basketball with superb ball movement finding Warriner and Robinson. Taylors good show would be highlighted in the fourth minute when he produced a superb block on Rodriguez. A 3-pointer from Cavaliers captain, Jason Moore would disrupt Lions parade but Dixon responded with his own to settle the score. The trialist; Robinson was proving his worth with a good spell at both ends and is already becoming a crowd favourite.
With three minutes remaining, a reminder of Cavaliers threats was provided when Mitchell and Ellis sunk a 3-pointer a piece. Bucci and Sweeney combined well in response and in the last minute Thomson produced a nice lay up to take the lead to 22pts, 60-82. A spirited finish from Mewnith Hill enabled them to reduce the deficit to 18pts and at the final buzzer the 87-69 score indicated a good win for TADEA Middlesbrough Lions.
The TADEA MVP was awarded to Matt Taylor of Middlesbrough who was not the highest collector of points, rebounds or assists but was the catalyst of most good plays. Taylor finished with 9pts, 8 rebounds, 2 assists & 2 steals. Ralph Bucci was again on another level with 22pts, 11 rebounds, 6 assists & 4 steals. No Middlesbrough player played more than half the game as the whole team was given a good run. Young Cassidy was also impressive with 2 blocks and 4 assists.

Two New Players Try Out For Lions Ahead of American Showdown
TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions are
preparing for an
unknown test
this Sunday
against American
side; Menwith
Hill Cavaliers.
In what is a
traditional pre
season event,
the Lions have
beaten the
Americans twice
before, but with
a different
rotation of
players year on
year, you never
know which side
the Americans
will have and
after being
beaten twice by
the English,
they are sure to
be determined to
settle a score.TADEA Lions will be trialling two new players in this game with Tom Robinson and Cameron Sweeney both impressing Lions coach James Thomson when they played for Carlisle two weeks ago. After speaking with Panthers coach Pete Longworth, permission was granted to speak to the pair and after positive discussions they have been invited to train with the club and play on Sunday. “They are two players that will provide us with extra options on both defence and offence. We will see what happens over the next few days to a week.” Added Coach James Thomson.
Cavaliers coach; Charlotte Evans is hoping her side will gel in time for Sundays game, indicating they have not had much time to prepare as the new team is just coming together. The last meeting at Eston was a 3pt win to Middlesbrough with the Americans gathering pace toward the end to test the nerves of the Lions team and crowd.
Coach Thomson is expecting a tough encounter. “We know this is a charity game and everyone is pitching in to help out, but there is also the game itself and the inventors of basketball will not have taken kindly to being beaten twice by us. Therefore I am expecting a very tough game and we will have to be at our very best.
Regarding the squad, TADEA Lions will be without Lithuanian Mindaugas Krisciunas and young star John Ford, who really impressed in the second half against Derby last week. This may provide the talented Leo Cassidy with a good opportunity to make an impression while returning to the squad is big man Anthony Humes following a broken foot.
The game takes place at Eston Sports Academy and people are asked to be seated for 3.30pm. Entry is FREE if you collect tickets before game day.
Another bonus for the Teesside public has been the participation of American superstar Ralph Bucci. Bucci, from New York is regarded as one of the best players to play in British basketball and has spent the last 7 years playing professionally in Greece, most recently winning the A2 Championship with Iraklis. Bucci will play again this Sunday if he is still in the country.
In what is a rare opportunity to witness a genuine superstar in action, Bucci has agreed to play in TADEA Middlesbrough Lions games whilst in the country. Bucci is a good friend of Lions owner; James Thomson and has a wife and 1 year old son from Middlesbrough. “When James asked me to be part of this event and help raise the profile of basketball and Lions as well as money for such a worthy cause, I was happy to be involved.” Added the 33 year old.

of sport; Diane
Evans.Lions chief; James Thomson who also runs Game Time, which operates the Tees College League presented the awards and hailed the development of the players and importance of the league which had 10 local colleges involved this season. "Four players from that final are involved with Lions National League side which shows the standard of basketball in this area at college level" added James Thomson.
Ryon Dixon, coach of the Darlington side and player with Middlesbrough Lions also collected the Coach of The Year award.
The unbeaten
Darlington
College of
Technology team
came up against
a much improved
Carmel team who
would prove to
be a tough test
for home team.
Coach Dixon
decided that
some different
tactics were in
order today to
keep Carmel
danger man Leo
Cassidy from
stealing the
show. Darlington
were to play a
“triangle and 2”
defence which
basically meant
two players man
marked Leo out
of the game with
the three
remaining
defenders in a
triangle set up
under the basket
zonal marking
the remaining
four players.
This defence
would prove to
be the key in
Darlington being
crowned
Champions.
Ryan Gillham and David Graham were handed the task of man marking Leo Cassidy from the first whistle and as a result earned starting places.
The first
quarter was up
and down from
the start with
both teams
missing open
baskets, due to
high intensity
defence from
both teams. It
finished 14-11
in favour of
Darlington
College with
Mark Williams
and Liam Smith
both on 5
points, closely
followed by John
Ford on 4. Ryan
Gillham and
David Graham
were sticking to
their task well
and had
restricted Leo
to just 2 points
in the first
quarter. However
Craig Todd had
accumulated 3
quick fould
through hard
defence which
would see the
Darlington
forward
relegated to te
bench until the
second half. The
intensity
carried on in to
the second
quarter with
Sean Kelly
stepping up with
6 unanswered
points forcing
Coach Dixon to
call a Time-out
to reassemble
his team.
Another 5 points
each from Mark
Williams and 4
from John Ford
steadied the
game and swung
it back in
favour of the
home team for a
25-21 lead at
half time.
The second half
began and Liam
Smith found a
second wind with
a couple of
coast to coast
baskets and big
blocks that
would see the
talented forward
amass a total of
12 points and 3
blocks in the
quarter alone.
The Darlington
team were
beginning to
play some
attractive
basketball with
pin point
passing and
moving coupled
with David
Graham and Ryan
Gillham’s
relentless
defence of
Carmel’s star
man proving to
be too much and
the third
quarter finished
with Darlington
leading 41-34.
Leo Cassidy dug
in deep in the
fourth quarter
to find some 7
points with
tired legs but
this wasn’t
enough to bring
the improving
Carmel side back
into the game
with a
buzzer-beating 3
point shot from
John Ford
sealing a 54-47
win for
Darlington
College to be
crowned 2010
champions of the
Game-Time
College League.
Special mentions
go out to the
League MVP John
Ford and also
high scorers
Liam Smith and
Mark Williams
for their part
in the final and
also to Leo
Cassidy for
earning 13 hard
fought points.
However the
Final MVP is
co-awarded to
Ryan Gillham and
David Graham for
their relentless
defence and
hustle in
limiting Cassidy
to 13 points.
Without their
hard work the
game could have
easily had a
different
winner.

FIBA World Championships
All eyes have diverted briefly from the NBA to the FIBA World Basketball Championships which is being held in turkey between the 28th of August and 12th September. 24 Teams have qualified which are divided up into 4 groups each containing 6 teams. Argentina are the favourites for group A but don’t count out strong squads from Germany and Australia although the Germans will be without NBA Superstar Dirk Nowitzki. Group B contains the Olympic Champions the USA alongside South American powerhouse Brazil. Croatia, Slovenia, Iran and Tunisia round up the group. Most favour the United States however they have an unproven team so this could prove to be one of the most interesting of the four groups. Group C consists of Puerto Rico, Greece, China, Russia Turkey and the Ivory Coast. The hosts will look for home court advantage but it will be tough to take out the favoured Greeks.
Several French NBA players including Tony Parker, Joakim Noah and Mickeal Pietrus are all out paving the way for Spain and Lithuania to be favourites in Group D. Sain who won the 2006 Championships in Japan will be without two time NBA Champion Pau Gasol. The Final will be held on Sunday 12th September and the winners are presented with Naismith trophy named for the inventor of Basketball Dr James Naismith.

TADEA Lions v Menwith Hill USA Preview
The Lions host their third pre season home game at Eston Sports Academy this Sunday against American outfit; Menwith Hill USA. Middlesbrough have enjoyed some good encounters with the side over the years and this game is almost traditional as both sides use the opportunity to prepare for their respective seasons.
The Americans are the grand masters of basketball but TADEA Lions have always faired well against Menwith Hill Cavaliers. The team is made up of American armed forces personnel and depending on who is available and fit for selection will depend on what time of game the Lions will expect. Head Coach of the Cavaliers; Charlotte Evans is hoping that the majority of her squad will be available and fit and wouldn't mind putting one over on the Lions, who have beaten her side twice at Eston.
TADEA Lions Coach; James Thomson is hoping for a good game from his side adding "After an exhausting game against Derbyshire it would be nice to have a good win at home to the Cavaliers. We always seem to raise our game against the Americans and the guys really seem to enjoy themselves. The worry is that we don't know much ahead of the game and they are likely to have 1 or 2 superstars, which is good for the spectators but not for us!"
Everyone is encouraged to attend this game free of charge by collecting FREE game tickets in advance. For more details call 01642 814221. Spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm and please bear in mind the Middlesbrough 10K run will be taking place in central Middlesbrough, which should not affect major roads but extra time should be given just in case.

TADEA Lions Show Great Character Against Strong Derbyshire
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions 97-102 Derbyshire Arrows
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions entertained a strong Derby Arrows side at Eston Sports Academy and came close to an upset with a superb rally in the fourth quarter to impress the home crowd. Derby travelled with only nine players, however their credentials were impressive with five of the squad representing their Division One team, a massive four divisions higher than TADEA Lions.
The point of the game though was to provide a tough test for Middlesbrough and great entertainment for the fans and this was given in abundance as the TADEA Lions battled back from a 20pt deficit in the second quarter. Lions relied heavily on American superstar; Ralph Bucci who took a while to warm up initially but once in full swing was in a league of his own for the second consecutive game.
Lions began the brighter side with Damian Warriner and Ryon Dixon edging a 5-2 lead. A careless foul from Rob Parsons cost Lions the lead when Jonny Kelly converted an ‘And 1’ play and this was followed by Sebastian Chitagu who produced a strong shot inside the key. In the fifth minute Matt Taylor scored for Lions from a nice pass by Bucci. Bucci then produced a strong drive for the basket and foul, although he missed the bonus. Shortly after Bucci again connected the pass, this time to Parsons to provide a slender 3pt lead, 13-10.
Both sides would trade baskets until the last minute when a lapse in concentration allowed Derbyshire a 7-0 run to leave the quarter 16-25 ahead. Luke Parker was the thorn in the side of Lions as he weaved through the defence with ease.
Rebounding
was proving
problematic for
TADEA Lions and
in the second
quarter the
Arrows were
gaining
confidence as
they collected
second and third
chances.
Middlesbrough
were just a
second slower on
most reactions.
Hignet, Smith
and Strong
combined for an
early 8pts and
aside of a
Warriner lay up
Lions didn’t
score an open
play basket in
the first four
minutes. Dean
Hanson converted
two free throws
after a foul,
but was looking
sluggish. Bucci
hit a long range
jumper in the
fifth minute but
this only seemed
to anger Arrows
lynchpin;
Chitagu who used
his size, power
and skill to hit
two consecutive
‘And 1’ plays
for 6pts. Bucci
and Taylor both
went to the line
for TADEA Lions
hitting 2of2 and
1of2
respectively.
Poor rebounding
and too many
turnovers were
costing Lions
and the lead was
now at 20pts.
Bucci took the
bull by the
horns as he
attempted to
revive Lions
with 10pts in
four minutes and
he was supported
well by two big
3’s from Ryon
Dixon.
Derbyshire
though, were not
ready to throw
in the towel and
held on for a
13pt lead at the
end of the half,
41-54.
Lions
went for youth
in the third
with Ford and
Cassidy not
disappointing.
Ford hit the
first basket and
hustled on
defence but
still the Arrows
responded this
time with James
Kelly inspiring
a 6-0 run. The
difference in
the two sides
was consistency
as the Arrows
showed a strong
and consistent
standard of
basketball while
TADEA Lions were
showing flashes
of brilliance
mixed in with
terrible errors.
Bucci, Ford &
Warriner were
ploughing ahead
for
Middlesbrough
but again the
impressive
Chitagu was on
hand for 10pts
to ensure his
side still
enjoyed the lead
64-78 at the end
of the third.
There was a
feeling however
of a change in
momentum.
In the fourth
quarter a
rousing request
for a show of
pride from Coach
Thomson seemed
to have the
desired affect
as TADEA Lions
produced an 8-0
run off the back
of superb play
by John Ford to
bring the home
team within
8pts. By the mid
way point the
Lions were
showing great
fighting spirit
and thanks to a
big 3-pointer
from Bucci, just
2pts behind at
80-82. The crowd
were ecstatic,
which placed
additional
pressure on the
visitors. As
both teams
battled for the
game everything
was to play for
and with three
minutes
remaining
another
important time
out was called
by TADEA Lions
chief, Thomson,
calling for ball
direction toward
Bucci for the
drive and Dixon
for the 3-point
shot. Again his
troops came up
trumps as Dixon
produced three
consecutive 3’s
to bring the
crowd to the
edge of their
seat.
Unfortunately
the elation
would fade as
the clock ran
down with
Derbyshire still
controlling the
lead. There was
time for one
more highlight
for
Middlesbrough as
17 year old Ford
tracked back to
produce an
amazing block
which brought
the arena to its
feet. In the end
Derby held on
for a
deserved
5pt victory but
their was a huge
round of
applause for the
gallant TADEA
Lions with fans
leaving the game
praising the
character
against such
strong
opposition.
The game was a spectacle for the neutral and displayed two players at the top of their game, Ralph Bucci of TADEA Lions hit 44pts, 19 rebounds, 8 assists & 3 steals while Sebastian Chitagu hit 47pts, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals & 1 block. Bucci was awarded the MVP, despite being on the losing side for his impressive all round stats. A special mention goes to Luke Parker who dished 10 assists for Derbyshire, while Ford was again an inspiration for Middlesbrough.

TADEA Lions Finish Strong for Big Win
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions 90-57 Carlisle Panthers
TADEA Middlesbrough Lions bounced into Pre Season with a 33pt win over Carlisle Panthers at Eston Sports Academy. A spirited crowd of over 350 took advantage of the PRE Season is FREE Season offer and witnessed what would best be described as a game of two halves. In the first half Lions enjoyed the upper hand for the majority of time, but were unable to up the gears and spells of mistakes allowed the Panthers to maintain a threatening position.
In the second half, American superstar, Ralph Bucci entered the game for the Lions and provided his own version of poetry in motion as he dominated from end to end. Bucci, who is from New York and has played the last 7 years in Greece (winning the Greek A2 Championship last season with Iraklis) is a personal friend of club owner; James Thomson and agreed to feature for Lions in the second half as a treat for the Eston basketball fans. “James is working really hard to develop professional basketball and when he asked me to play to help raise money for charity, I was happy to.” added the 33 year old American.
Lions drew first blood as Damian Warriner scored a lay up. A small lapse in concentration followed shortly after when the tenacious guard missed both free throws after being fouled on his next shot and this led to Tomas Robinson dribbling full court for an athletic leap toward the basket and claiming an “And 1” Play by drawing a foul on Lions’ Rob Parsons. Robinson hit the bonus shot to give the visitors a 2-3 lead.
The lead though was short lived as Ryon Dixon fired in a 3-pointer to the delight of the crowd. New signing; Matt Taylor then extended the lead with a nice low post shot and followed this with two free throws. Craig Stevenson replied for Panthers but the visitors were making too many mistakes, the tenacity of Warriner’s defence being the main cause of Carlisle’s woes. In the fifth minute Carlisle produced a good 6-0 run to force Lions coach; James Thomson to call a time out. Robinson hit all 6pts for Panthers. The little break seemed to do the trick and with big man Dean Hanson re-entering the game Lions looked more solid on defence and produced a 7-0 run to regain control. A last second shot by Cameron Sweeney dampened the end slightly for Lions, however they were still 5pts in front, 18-13.
The
second quarter
stuttered into
life for Lions
as some early
mistakes allowed
the Panthers to
pounce as
Stevenson and
Robinson both
scored to bring
the game within
1pt. With the
crowd in good
voice and the
tight game
releasing a
great
atmosphere,
everything was
set for the
TADEA Lions to
push forward,
however it was
more good play,
in particular
from Terry
Cannon and
seasoned veteran
Dave Rickerby
which allowed
the Carlisle
side to string
an 8-0 lead in
response to a
3-pointer from
Lions Justinas
Lasevicius.
Carlisle danger
man; Robinson
hit his 15th
point in the run
which was
eventually
broken by
Middlesbrough
player coach;
Thomson with a
baseline shot
for 2pts in the
sixth minute.
It would seem
that any TADEA
Lions good play
was in response
to the visitors
good runs and to
validate,
Middlesbrough
produced a 12-3
run to finish
the half just
1pt ahead,
33-32.
In the third quarter, Bucci was introduced to the game but the talented guard would not score until the fifth minute and instead his presence seemed to inspire the rest of the players to play better, in particular 17 year old John Ford and 18 year old Leo Cassidy who combined for 6pts and contributed some impressive defence. 7’1 Lion, Dean Hanson was proving formidable on the boards, collecting his 10th rebound in the fourth minute and delivering one of his four assists to the running Warriner. Without the scoring assistance of Bucci, Lions had built their biggest lead of 8pts, 42-34.
The third quarter was proving more than just a difficult one for Carlisle, despite a gallant effort from Cameron Sweeney. Bucci was creating a nuisance of himself all over the court and in the fifth minute pulled up for a long range jumper. The next play involved the powerful New Yorker again as he stole the ball and delivered a good pass for Warriner to take the scores to 50-40 in favour of the hosts.
Hanson, recently back from a sprained ankle showed signs of rust as did fellow big man Anthony Humes, who has had a 10 week lay off with a broken ankle. Both players showed flashes of potential however failed to spark the offence alight. Their defence though was looking solid and TADEA Lions were proving the depth their squad has this season. With one minute remaining Lions were ahead 18pts, 45-63 and Carlisle would have been forgive for throwing in the towel, yet a positive team talk during a time out from Panthers Coach; Peter Longworth ignited a 6-0 run to finish the quarter and spark belief in the Carlisle team, much to the satisfaction of their fans.
In
the fourth
quarter,
Lithuanian:
Mindaugas
Krisciunas
showed some
Lions heart as
he hustled on
defence,
producing an
athletic block,
which was called
for goal tending
by the refs.
Terry Cannon
converted both
free throws
after being
fouled by Dixon,
but the TADEA
Lions responded
in emphatic
fashion with
12-0 run and a
27-4 run overall
in the last
seven minutes of
the game. Ralph
Bucci and John
Ford were in
fine form for
Lions as Bucci
collected 14pts.
Dean Hanson and
Ryon Dixon were
superb on
defence during
this period and
the Panthers
were left
licking their
wounds after
such a strong
performance for
three quarters.
Ryon Dixon’s
3-pointer sealed
a 33pt victory
for TADEA
Middlesbrough
Lions.
Lions young guard; John Ford was chosen as the TADEA MVP by company chief executive, Paul Jackson, attending his first Lions game. Mr Jackson was pleased with both the result and the potential of TADEA Middlesbrough Lions adding “I am very excited about this new venture and with our company’s help in various areas I would like to think we will have this superb venue at maximum capacity by the end of the season.”
Robinson and Sweeney impressed for Carlisle and together hit 39pts which was 3/4 of the visitors points. TADEA Lions coach, James Thomson was pleased with the result but believes the best is still yet to come. "There was improvement in our play as the game continued and this is good. We need to limit mistakes and become even more ruthless on offence. The team is still gelling so there is no pressure and when Humes and Marshall get back to fitness I am going to have a selection head ache which will hopefully lead to a more determined and productive game from all players. Today, Ralph was a cut above the rest and despite good performances by Warriner and Dixon, it was nice to see the efforts of John were recognised by the sponsors. I am so happy that we had a good crowd turn out and were able to show our new sponsors the potential for top quality basketball as an entertainment option in this area."

Middlesbrough
Lions senior squad make the short journey to
Olympia Building, University of Teesside this
Saturday for a 4pm tip off against TV Sonics.
The Sonics recently lost against Hull and
Huddersfield and will be looking to put their
season back on track, however Lions are in their
best form of the season and with the chase for
7th place up for grabs Lions need to win two of
their final three games for the opportunity to
leap frog Stockport Falcons.

Middlesbrough
Lions were amongst the victims of recent bad
weather, having two games around Christmas
cancelled. But now with the snow gone and the
country returning to somewhat normality Lions
face a difficult test away to Bury Blue Devils
on Saturday.
