Middlesbrough College Basketball Academy
A
collaborative venture between Middlesbrough College, Game Time and
Middlesbrough Lions
Basketball Club to develop one of the best basketball programmes in the
North East.
The course aims to provide male & female basketball enthusiasts of a high
standard with the opportunity to develop their athletic skills and potential
alongside their academic studies.
Prospective students can choose form the wide range of courses available at
Middlesbrough College and will receive structured basketball training to
Academy standard throughout the week.
Middlesbrough College will be represented in the Tees College League,
Teesside Senior League and British Colleges Competitions, providing plenty
of competitive opportunities throughout the season.
This course is ideal for both those with ambitions of pursuing a career in
professional basketball and can lead to playing opportunities at National
level with the College and Middlesbrough Lions basketball club. Elite
athletes will be identified for International consideration as well as
playing opportunities overseas via scholarship programmes.
Facilities
Middlesbrough College is now at its new £75 million home on the exclusive Middlehaven development in Middlesbrough. Within the College is a two court sports hall, state of the art fitness suite and spa centre.
Students on the basketball academy will also have access to
physiotherapy, conditioning programmes and nutritional advice to ensure
athletes are in peak condition.
The College would also stress the importance of academic achievements,
especially in consideration of the competition for well paid professional
playing positions and have a number of related qualifications, including
coaching, refereeing, table officials and statisticians, which all Academy
members will undertake. These qualifications can lead to paid work in the
local area.
James
Thomson, Head Coach
James is head of Game Time and Middlesbrough Lions. He is one of the leading
figures in basketball in the area and is a member of the executive committee
for the Teesside Basketball League. James recently revamped the Cleveland
County schools basketball league and the renamed Tees Schools League has
received recognition around the country as one of the best and most promoted
schools sports leagues in the UK.
This year James established a Tees College League with 11 local colleges competing for honours.
“These leagues provide the foundations for us to develop and prepare enthusiasts at a young age for future enrolment to the college basketball academy. We now have in place a production line for basketball development which will hopefully produce some of the best players in the country.” added Coach Thomson
