Lions opened the
scoring Katie Dodgson converting a powerful move
to the basket followed by a nice lay up from Dan
Brown. Velocity fired back a reply soon after
with Dowson, K Quinn and Hudson combining well
to collect six points. With the game at 4-6 and
the first quarter almost over both teams were
showing good defence but struggling on the
offence. In the final minute Charlie Collins and
Dan Brown added to the Lions tally to take a 2
point lead with the scores at 8-6.
In the second
quarter Velocity came out a more determined side
with Dowson in inspirational form as he scored
the first basket and set up team mate Shaw to
take the lead 8-10. Some good defence form
Michael Peddie resulted in Lions scoring two
fast breaks to regain their slender lead. In the
final seconds, Hudson was fouled as he went for
a shot for Velocity which enabled him to go to
the free throw line and convert both attempts to
tie the game yet again, 12-12 which is how it
finished for half time.
During half time a
game of knock out was played with both teams
participating. In the end Liam McGravy of
Velocity beat off the competition to win a mini
basketball set.
In the third quarter
it was the turn of Lions to come out strong as
Dan Brown scored the first 6 points of the game.
Excellent defence by Dodgson and Duff were
providing the fast breaks with Brown only too
happy to oblige. In the fifth minute, Velocity
marked the scoreboard with K Quinn again on
target from just inside the key. This,
unfortunately would be their only basket of the
third quarter whilst Lions continued to score
via an athletic drive by Duff and a jump shot
from D Brown. A solid display from the Lions
resulted in an eight point lead at the end of
the end of the third, 22-14.
The final quarter
was a little better from Velocity as Dowson hit
his first two shots but Lions were beginning to
perform with D Brown the star of the show. Brown
collected eight unanswered points to extend the
Lions lead to 14. Hudson replied in the sixth
minute but this would be their last basket of
the game. Duff and Dodgson rounded off the
scoring for Lions and at the final buzzer the
scoreboard indicated a Lions win, 34-18
Dan Brown was yet
again a driving force for the Lions juniors as
the 12 year old showed superb ability at both
ends of the court.
