The game started slowly for both sides after
coaches from both teams emphasised the
importance of strong defence. Katie Dodgson
scored first for Lions B as she drove with
confidence to the hoop. She followed this up
with a free throw after being fouled during a
shot although she missed her second foul shot.
Dan Brown, returning to action after his
impressive 44 point haul the previous week did
well on the counter and collected six points
with Marshall Patterson chipping in another to
bring the score line to 8-5 in the first
quarter.
The second was less than impressive for the B
team as they struggled to string together the
passes and find the open players. Alan Slasor
scored first and this was followed six minutes
later by Oliver Clark, who grabbed an offensive
rebound and finished the move with a strong lay
up for two points. If the six minute drought
wasn't bad enough the four points collected
would represent their final tally for the second
quarter. The A team didn't fair much better as
they collected six points with Dan Brown (4) and
Katie Lamb on target. The end of the half
finishing a lowly 13-9. Although the defence
from both teams at times was good, the offence
was often in need of improvement.
The half time team talks seemed to do the trick
as both teams came out strong. Dan Brown hit two
quick baskets which was countered by an
impressive display from Katie Dodgson for the B
team. Dodgson converted a fast break and then
set up Slasor for his next two baskets. Seven
year old Michael Sumpton again scored for the
third week in a row with his unorthodox but
useful underarm shot to reduce the A teams lead
to two points with the score at 17-15. To bring
a halt to the B teams run and increase the lead
for the A team, Katie Lamb exploded into life to
hit three mid range jump shots in a row. Slasor
would hit back with another four points although
Daniel Paxton rounded off the third quarter with
two superb moves for the A team to extend their
lead to eight points, 27-19.
The fourth quarter again saw the accurate
shooting of Lamb who found her spot at the top
of the key. Daniel Wright scored from a big
rebound and this was followed by Alan Slasor
hitting a baseline jumper. A quiet Marshall
Patterson weaved his way through the B team
defence to score only his second basket of the
game, although this was compensated by the
scoring presence of team mate Dan Brown who
collected a further six points in the final
quarter, leading the A team to an eleven point
victory.
Dan Brown was not as spectacular this game but
was still very effective, collecting 19 points
along the way. Team mate Katie Dodgson enjoyed a
great game at both ends of the court but it was
Katie Dodgson who earned the MVP award as she
ticked the majority of boxes in terms of good
work, passing, shooting, movement, defence, etc.
