Saturday:
Huddersfield Heat 93-69 Middlesbrough Lions
Sunday: Middlesbrough
Lions 75-90 Huddersfield Heat
Middlesbrough Lions had the
daunting task of facing unbeaten
league leaders, Huddersfield
Heat twice at the weekend and in
both games Heat were given a
shock, especially on Sunday at
Eston with Lions leading at half
time by 1pt. The difference in
both games came down to one
factor and this was exceptional
play by an exceptional player in
former England star, Jason
Swaine. If it wasn’t for his
famous shot, it was some superb
passing. Swaine hit 31pts on
Saturday and 28 on Sunday while
he collected an impressive 8
assists at Eston with two
leading to dunks.
To counter such a threat, Lions
had to be at their optimum best
and although they were unable to
achieve this in both games, they
came very close. At Huddersfield
Lions were chasing the Heat
basket for basket with Warriner
containing Swaine well initially
before collecting his third foul
toward half time. Michael Peddie
was a burst of inspiration while
Ryon Dixon and Rob Parsons
provided some key shots. At the
end of the first quarter Lions
were down by just 1pt 20-19
despite quiet games from Anyigbo
and Norton.
Anyigbo was overcrowded in the
key and it was proving difficult
to feed him the ball while
Norton continued to struggle
with his shot hitting just 2 of
12 from 3 point range in
comparison with 7 of 10 for
Heat’s Swain. Louis Ware made
his debut for Lions and earned
some additional time with a
strong performance as he brought
a new dimension for a period in
the second quarter. At half time
Heat had produced a cushion as
they led 46-34.
Norton opened the third with a
big 3 pointer and Dixon went one
better with two big 3’s and with
a resurgent Anyigbo adding 6pts
Lions took the quarter 20-19,
the lead down to 11. Aside of
Swaine, Eugene Andrews was
proving a big threat as he
converted three 3's in the first
half and was weaving from coast
to coast with lightening speed.
The fourth quarter though is
where it went wrong as Lions
struggled to contain the ‘Swaine
Train’ as it chugged to a
generous 24pt win. Lions may
have deserved a more respectful
gap but the score never lies,
the only comfort was knowing
they worried the league leaders
and had an opportunity to prove
themselves again the next day.
The first three minutes saw
Lions take a 9-5 lead only for
Huddersfield to produce a 15-0
run which should have crushed
most teams but a time out from
Lions coach James Thomson seemed
to steady the ship as Lions
brought back the game as Anyigbo
produced an ‘And 1’ play,
followed shortly by 3’s from
Dixon and Norton. A late
baseline shot from Warriner
brought Lions to within 2pts at
the end of the first quarter,
22-24.
The real eye opener for the game
and especially the home crowd
was the second quarter as Lions
won the period 18-13 to take a
1pt lead into half time.
Warriner started proceedings
with a 3 pointer and Parsons was
excellent with three key
baskets. Peddie was an
inspiration and Swaine was held
to just 3pts.
Lions good play would continue
in the third as Parsons and
Peddie continued to fire up the
crowd and Norton buried
yesterday’s nightmare with three
sweet 3’s. One problem stood in
the way of Lions extending their
lead and this was Swain as he
17pts in this period including
four 3’s and one from 8 feet
behind the line. A 67-62 score
in favour of the Heat showed
Lions were still in the game
despite sticky patches and a
faultless 3rd quarter display
from Swaine.
Baskets were traded by both
sides in the first five minutes
with Perez hitting two big 3’s
which were cancelled out by
Norton and Dixon to keep the
fans on the edge of their seat.
In the last five minutes neither
team could settle into a rhythm
although Perez was popping up
with some big shots to silently
increase the visitors lead. With
one minute left Lions had missed
4 of 6 free throws and as they
stared defeat in the face, one
last play of excitement topped
of the game as Anyigbo received
the long pass for an energetic
dunk. The game finished with a
15pt win for Heat.
The MVP in both games was top
scoring Jason Swaine, proving at
35, he is still the best player
in the league.
