Middlesbrough Lions B 105-115 Ryedale Warriors

Ryedale Warriors were the latest visitors to Middlesbrough College, looking to upset Lions title bid with the Middlesbrough side on two game losing streak and looking to bounce back against a team they beat at Ryedale in November.

Ryedale paraded new signing; Steve Brown and the talented Scarborough College guard opened the scores for the Warriors with a neat lay up  after winning the tip. Matthew Brown fired back for Lions with a lay up of his own and with following baskets from Shane Beadle and Michael Peddie, Lions were leading 6-4 in the third minute. Brown would then hit a double for the visitors for a short lead which would be cancelled out by a Dan Brown 3 pointer followed by Matthew Brown converting two free throws after being fouled by Leadley. The game switched leads several times until the seventh minute when Warriors, led by Brown and player/coach Martin Roberts produced a 12-6 run to take an end of quarter lead of 7pts, 23-30.

Middlesbrough coach; James Thomson had selected a young side for this game with a number of key players not making the team due to absence from training and the young players were more than capable with Alan Slasor, Dan Brown and Philip Findlay playing extremely well as guards and Shane Beadle and James Parkin proving their value inside. Beadle in particular was a key figure at both ends of the court.

Hodgson was running into foul trouble for Warriors, although that did not lessen the impact of the tidy guard as he continued to score late on in the second quarter adding 11pts in the last four minutes. By the fifth minute, Lions had reduced the deficit to 3pts, 30-33 but were unable to take the lead, despite some good offence from Philip Findlay who hit 6pts in the final minute of the half. Warriors finished the happier side with an 8pt cushion, 46-54 although Middlesbrough felt they had it all to play for.

In the third quarter Warriors produced a 7-0 run, instigated by Leadley to provide a dent to the Lions ambitions of resurrecting the game. A 3 pointer from Roberts rounding off the run. In the second minute Lions found the mark through Matthew Brown and then Alan Slasor who converted after a lovely pass from Peddie. Peddie then turned from provider to scorer as he drove to the basket on two consecutive occasions with a similar and effective lay up to reduce the Ryedale lead to 11pts, 54-65, but still the combination of Brown and McAfee was enough to maintain a comfortable lead. In the ninth minute, Middlesbrough, through the speed and agility of Peddie came within 5pts, 76-81, but the on form Brown was there again to extend the visitors lead to 11pts with a late 6-0 run as the last seconds of the third period ticked by, leaving a 76-87 score line.

Matthew Brown, who had struggled in the first three period from outside the perimeter, sailed a 3 for Lions on the restart and then drove to the hoop for a further 2pts.
