Richmond Vikings Juniors 19-26 Tees United Lions Juniors

Richmond Vikings hosted two games this week with their impressive junior outfit playing the Tees United Lions juniors prior to the TBL Division 2 fixture for the senior players. Both clubs are a credit to the development of junior players with more than 20 young basketball enthusiasts on display.

The home team opened the scoring with Jack Vickerman making quick use of his feet to score on the fast break. Lions then hit back as Cherydan Gouldthorp and Phil Findlay scored to take the lead. Vikings’ Will Gardner found his shot in the fourth minute with two well executed jumpers from just outside the key although this triggered an immediate response from Lions’ Findlay who scored the next 7 points to place the visitors into a comfortable position at 6-12.

Charlie Keays was the man of the moment towards the end of the first half as he drove to the basket strong, was fouled by Lion’s Marshall Patterson and made the basket, resulting in a bonus free throw. Keays missed the bonus but made amends on the next play with another 2 points through a baseline drive. Keauney brought the Vikings to within 2 points, 12-14 in the last minute before the Lions rescued another 6 points through the quick hands of Jason Loveridge leading to assists for Chris Chapman and Findlay. The half time score board reading 12-20 in favour of the Lions, but the Vikings had proven they had what it takes to get back into the game.

The second half was a tight game with defence being the theme. In fact both teams managed to score only 13
combined points such was the level of defence on display. Marshall Patterson was a rock for the Lions as the 14 year old used his big 6’2” frame to good effect. Phil Findlay continued his excellent play while Gardner and Keays gave their all for the Vikings. The Vikings showed good resilience but in the end it was a well earned 7 point win for the Lions. Philip Findlay of Lions was awarded the MVP and top scored with 18 points.
