Middlesbrough Lions Ladies Basketball Team

Lions ladies play in the Teesside Basketball League, Division Two. Training takes place every Monday night from 7-9pm at the superb new Middlesbrough College. The team consists of a very young side with lots of talent and potential.

Adam Walsh is the head coach of the Lions ladies and prepares structured training sessions each week to improve the players individually as well as a team. Coach Walsh is keen to improve the overall fitness levels of the team knowing that ultimately, a fitter team will keep running when others tire.

Coach Walsh keeps track of the girls progress each week and feeds back team targets to the players to recognise improvements and reward good play. Most importantly the players are provided with an incentive to work harder each week to better their previous efforts.

On the playing side, the Lions are led by the star trio of Lizzy Walsh, Stephanie Edwards and American; Brittany Krimsky. The squad boast a number of other talented players in Katie Dodgson and Katie Lamb who provide the heart of the team with their hard work and desire to win. Lizzy is from Bolton and is one of the more experienced players in the team. She is a very quick point guard with an accurate shot off the dribble. Her passing is very good and her defence is always tenacious, which not only puts pressure on the opposition but also infects her team mates with a similar passion to up their efforts.

The Lions farthest import is American Brittany Krimsky who at 6'1" can play centre and forward. Brittany from Albany in New York played High School basketball for Beren-Knox-Westerlo High School, where she was highly regarded. Brittany also attended the College of St Rose Basketball Camp in Albany, which is where Game Time's Ralph Bucci went to College. Krimsky was one of the main scorers for the Bulldogs, hitting a season high 21 points against Duanesburg in the 2007 season of the Western Atlantic Conference.

Just as important as the established players, are the improvements in players such as Stephanie Palmer, Cherydan Gouldthorp and Claire Smith, who have all made great progress in recent months.

For the 2008/09 season, the club have acquired a number of star signings, including versatile guard; Donna Cuthbertson and sister act; Katie and Ali Robson. Donna is a former product of the acclaimed East Durham Basketball Academy where she gained a lot of recognition and respect for her talent. She is a comfortable shooter from both inside and outside of the 3 point line and has excellent vision. Katie and Ali are also excellent players at both ends of the court. Katie's determination and ability to penetrate the defence will be a huge asset to the Lions.

Lions ladies aims this season will be to finish mid table in the TBL Division Two whilst also looking to do well in the TBL Female CVL and a number of friendly games against female opposition.

The Lions also have a junior female training session before the seniors every Monday night from 6-7pm. This session is led by Lizzy Walsh with assistance from Brittany Krimsky, Steph Edwards as well as James Thomson and Adam Walsh. The sessions are for all ages and abilities and aim to develop the junior players to feed into the senior team. Female role models such as the Lions players are a great way of engaging with the young girls to ensure they have a positive and energetic activity to enjoy and progress in.
