Yummy Mummy's Earn First Win!

In the final months CVL it was all action in both the junior male league and the female league. Attention this month was uncontrollably drawn to the female league as three teams in Dragons, Dodgers and Jordettes were all contending to lift the title and bottom placed Yummy Mummy’s were still looking for their first win.

The Dragons got off to the best possible start with two wins from a shoot out with the Jordettes, due to previous drawn games. Cherydan Gouldthorp beat Stephanie Palmer in the shoot out which put the Dragons into a comfortable lead, although it wouldn’t be plain sailing as injuries to star players Gouldthorp and Claire Smith affected their play down the line. Dragons only managed to win one game although it was a convincing 22-12 victory over their title rivals Jordettes which meant the Dragons would now be crowned the 2008 female champions of the Game Time CVL.

The Yummy Mummy’s produced one of the most exciting games of the year against the Jordettes as Tracy Bewick and new signing Caroline Slasor shocked the Jordettes by not only scoring consistently, but also leading in the game and with 30 seconds left the scores were 16-16. Only the heroic displays from Charlie Collins brought the Jordettes victory as she hit the final 6pts including the winning shot.

The Yummy Mummy’s, confidence boosted from their last display went on to win their final game against the Champions; Dragons. Caroline Slasor was again in form with 6pts to tie the game 8-8 and force a shoot out. Cherydan Gouldthorp, who had already won two today went against Tracy Bewick and when Gouldthorp missed her first shot , Bewick capitalised on the error to sail a shot into the net to award the ecstatic Yummy Mummy’s their first win of the season.

In the junior league, a determined looking Lions overcame the already crowned Champions, The Losers 28-12 Philip Findlay hit 16pts with Dan Brown adding 10 to beat the Champions, who had only lost one game all season previous to this. The Losers though, got back into their usual stride, winning their next three games to extend their lead at the top of the table to an incredible 22pts.

Champs Beat off Lions To Second Place
With the title already decided it was a case of the other three teams chasing the runner up spot and although the Lions started in splendid fashion against the Champions, they struggled to repeat the same dominance in their following games.

In the final game between the Lions and The Champs, a game that would decide who would finish in second place, Dan Brown and Philip Findlay combined well to hit 6pts each, but some good defence by Oliver Clark and a super display from Nathan Duff, who hit all 12pts took the game into a shoot out and this was won by Duff and The Champs to earn the honour of runner up, just 2pts ahead of the Lions.

The leading scorers accolade was earned by Philip Findlay on 184pts and Stephanie Edwards on 150pts. Marshall Patterson and Nathan Duff, who joint top scored this month with 38 moved into 3rd and 4th place respectively with Patrick O’Connor, absent from the final event remaining in second place. In the female league, Katie Lamb was this month’s top scorer with 30pts and moved into second place, 4pts ahead of Cherydan Gouldthorp.

The players can now look forward to the plush presentation evening on 24th May to receive further awards and trophies. There will be nominations for award categories online soon.

Losers Keep On Winning To Earn Title!

The Losers kept up their winning streak with another clean sweep during this months CVL to be crowned the Champions of the Game Time CVL 2007/08. The free scoring trio of Marshall Patterson, Chris Chapman and Alan Slasor hit 24, 22 & 18 respectively to reach over 50 points in the league. The Losers are a massive 18 points clear of their closest rivals; The Champs. The Champs took second place away from the Lions, who had been in the position all season, led by scoring machine; Patrick O'Connor. O'Connor scored 54 points this month to overtake Lions' Philip Findlay as the leagues leading scorer with 176 points for the season, 32 ahead of Findlay.

11 year old Ethan Moon who joined the Lions last month enjoyed a good run and collected his first 4 points in the process. Lions are only 4 points behind The Champs, but then again only 2 points ahead of the All Star Tigers, making for an exciting climax to the 2007/08 CVL which will reach its conclusion next month.

The runner up spot can be achieved by any of the other three teams and the gap is too close to call, especially considering the honours at stake. The All Star Tigers will be hoping to turn out a full squad for the final event and if they can play to their full potential could produce a dramatic turnaround which could see them move from bottom, where they have been all season, to runner up. The recent rise to winning ways has been orchestrated by Tigers 15 year old Nathan Duff who has been instrumental to the Tigers cause and after missing the first two months is in a very respectable fifth place in the leading scorers table with 108 points, averaging 12 points per game. Patrick O'Connor is leading the scoring averages with 14.6 points per game and was nominated for the MVP along with Marshall Patterson. Patterson is proving a solid player on offence and defence but the award was made to Losers' team mate Chris Chapman who produced a sparkling display, adding 22 points and collecting a handful of steals.

Title Race Heating Up

In the first game of the female CVL, Dragon met the Dodgers and for the second month running tied the game, meaning a shoot out will need to determine the winning team. The Dodgers slipped from pole position to second place. They are tied on 34 points with The Dragons, however the Dragons have 2 games in hand due to the shoot outs. If the Dragons can win both shoot outs against the Jordettes they will go 6 points clear to become favourites for the GT CVL Championship which will finish the same time as the Junior CVL, next month.

The Yummy Mummy's, who's average age is 38 gave a good account of themselves this month, but were no match for the younger and more talented teams. Tracy Bewick led the mum's with 6 points but this would not be enough as four players from other teams hit double figures. Steph Edwards, Charlie Collins, Claire Smith and Katie Burton collected 22, 16, 12 & 10 respectively with Claire Smith in particular, shining bright. Smith and Dragons team mate Cherydan Gouldthorp were both nominated for this months MVP for their sharp shooting although they were just pipped by an explosive performance at both ends of the court from Jordettes' Charlie Collins. Collins missed the previous month due to injury and is hoping to lead her team to glory next month as the top three league places are wide open.

Lions Lose Composure!

The Lions first of all lost Daniel Wright to an injured hand and then lost their heads as they suffered their worst record in the CVL winning only 1 game from 5. In the latter stages of the CVL the Lions all but gave in which is never a good thing and not characteristic of the heart usually on display.

The All Star Tigers meanwhile capitalised on their opponents misfortune and coupled with their full compliment of players managed to win 3 of 5 games to increase their points haul, although they still sit at the foot of the table, 3 points behind the Champs and 4 points behind the Lions.

The Losers are still the force to be reckoned with as they yet again dominated the league with 4 wins and no losses and are a massive 13 points clear at the top. Marshall Patterson produced a powerful display in the first game to set the tone with 10 of his sides 16 points in the 16-12 win over Tigers.

Nathan Duff was awarded the MVP of the January round and top scored with 46 points. Philip Findlay still leads the top scorers with a massive 122 points but is now tied with Patrick O'Connor.

Dodgers Lose Pace

In the female league, only the Yummy Mummy's were fully represented with the other teams missing players. The Yummy Mummy's produced their best round so far as they hit 28 points, there previous best haul being 16 last month. In the final game against the Jordettes, the Yummy Mummy's came close to causing an upset as they only lost 10-12. Helen Brown was in good form with 12 points although the leading scorer for the third month in a row was Stephanie Edwards who is sitting pretty at the top of the leader board with 104 points, 44 ahead of Katie Dodgson.

Edwards good scoring was not enough to secure victory as they slumped to 2 defeats and only 1 win. These results mean that the Dodgers drop into third place after leading the league for three months. The Dragons and Jordettes are both level on 22 points although a shoot out needs to determine the outcome of the draw when the teams met each other.

Jordettes Dominate

The Jordettes dominated the female league, winning all their games to climb up the table. The girls, aided by new addition; Christina O'Connor are tied in first place with Dodgers and Dragons on 22 points. The Jordettes have a very strong squad, with O'Connor being the cherry on the top as she played her first CVL and scored 26 points, joint top scorer for the week with the equally impressive Stephanie Edwards of the Dodgers. The Dodgers were last months leading team and will be looking to regain their lead next month.

A number of players made their league debuts including young twins; Hannah and Louise Barnes, who, although didnt score, worked hard and made good contributions to their team. Eight year old Lauren Bewick returned to action and hit a couple of baskets after missing the last CVL whilst her mum; Tracy joined Ann Chapman on the Yummy Mummy's.

Stephanie Edwards, of the Dodgers is way out in front of the leading scorers with 70 points, 26 ahead of second placed Katie Lamb.

In the junior league The Losers had their first taste of defeat with a 14 point loss to the Lions. The Losers missed their influential big man; Marshall Patterson, who arrived late and Lions were only too happy to take advantage as Dan Brown and top scoring Philip Findlay enjoyed their famous victory.

In addition to the Losers first taste of defeat, their was a first taste of victory for the All Star Tigers as they beat The Champs by 6 points. Patrick O'Connor was the only player to mark the score sheet for the Champs. Nathan Duff was superb on his debut game at both ends of the court and finished the games with 26 points. Tigers could and possibly should have beaten Lions and Losers in their following games. Duff failed to score against the Losers leaving team mate and fellow newcomer; Daniel Ryan to make up the numbers as he rounded off a good CVL performance with 18 points, 8 of these against the Losers.

The top scorer for the third consecutive month is Philip Findlay, who added another fine haul of 36 points to bring his overall total to 98. Patrick O'Connor scored an incredible 20 points in one 10 minute game against the Lions to bring his impressive collection to 48, beating his last months record of 46. O'Connor is now second top scorer.

November 2007

Losers Still in Charge

Losers had to start this months CVL with a shootout against Lions to decide the winning team from their draw last month. The shootout between Philip Findlay and Alan Slasor seemed to last an age until Findlay missed and Slasor capitalised to earn an extra 3 points for the Losers.

There were two new teams in this weeks CVL with the Golden Oldies entering the female league and The Champs entering the male U16 league. All Star Tigers received a boost with the addition of big Gavin Patterson to their squad but were unlucky as Cameron Lee (2nd leading scorer) was absent due to illness. Top shooter; Alex Bailey was also missing leaving the Tigers to endure further suffering. Their fortunes though will surely improve if they can turn out a full team next month.

The Losers are proving the team to watch as they extended their unbeaten run to seven. The double act of Marshall Patterson and Alan Slasor is working extremely well although they will have to keep up the good play as Lions came close with their 12-18 defeat.

Newcomers; The Champs moved into second place after some great games saw them beat Lions and Tigers, but just miss out to the Losers. Patrick O'Connor and Oliver Clark, both newcomers played well with O'Connor being a constant thorn in the oppositions side!

In the female league, The Dodgers have edged the lead with five wins from seven games. Katie Lamb and Steph Edwards dealing the blows for Dodgers with some good support from newcomer; Sarah Thomson. The Golden Oldies, who were given the average points total as a new team, struggled to contend with the younger and fitter girls around them, although Debbie Burton marked the score sheet on a couple of occasions and their are rumours that they may be adding new players to their roster. One name that has been floating around is Singing Nurse; Tracy Bewick. Tracy's daughter plays for the Dodgers.

In the scorers department, Patrick O'Connor and Steph Edwards were the pick of the bunch with 46 and 30 points respectively. O'Connor moves into fourth place in the leaders table while Marshall Patterson and team mate Alan Slasor occupy second and third. Philip Findlay retains first position for the second month in a row after hitting 34 points.

Steph Edwards now heads the table in the female league after 16 more points than her closest rival; Katie Lamb, 14. Former leader; Charlie Collins only managed 10 points to see her position drop to third.

The Losers are Winning!

Its not often you win, if you are part of the losers, but the 'Losers' team won three of their four games in the Game Time Central Venue League yesterday. They top the table with 9 points from their first three games, 2 points ahead of the Lions in second with one loss. Losers seem to have a good gel of players with Marshall Patterson controlling the defence while Alan Slasor and Chris Chapman adding the points.

The Lions could extend their lead and actually tie first place if they win a shootout between themselves and the Losers. The game had finished a tie and will need to be decided by a shootout.

The All Star Tigers seemed to dominate in large areas of each game but just failed to take the important wins. Tigers' Cameron Lee put on a dazzling performance and finished as the leagues second top scorer. His defence was also good, but his team will need to start winning games to earn full plaudits. Dan Brown of the Lions showed a more determined force as he attacked the basket and with 18 points is tied for third place in the leading scorers with Chris Chapman. The League MVP though is awarded, for a fine performance throughout all four games of October, to Philip Findlay who leads the league in scoring with 28 points.

The Female League looks to be a more even affair with each team winning two games and losing two! The youngest player, in eight year old Lauren Bewick, enjoyed some good play and finished October off with a respectable 6 points. The scoring leader is Charlie Collins, who also earned the MVP award for October, with 18 points. Second place is a tie between Kirsty Crundwell, Emily Manders and Katie Lamb, all with 16 points.
